There are some pretty steep sections climbing up and down which I would not recommend to inexperienced hikers. Even the dog found it a bit much after a while and just stopped to have a sit down 😀 The 7 mile circular route took us roughly 4 hours (anticlockwise) with a few breaks for tea and snacks.

It's a popular spot, especially in good weather, so if you want to capture the picturesque beauty of the place without being overrun by people you may have to be patient But it's worth the wait! The marked route is an out-and-back but I chose to continue up the River Dane valley, more stunning views, and work my way back up onto the main A54 road, along one of the few indicated paths. It's not hard to navigate as the road is always clearly visible on the near horizon. Once on the roadway it's a short walk back to your car but you do get the additional advantage of views along the river valley. I will suggest this to AT as an alternative route. Altogether, one of the best views so far this year, all the better for it being a hot, sunny day. A short but challenging route, highly recommended.

We started off from Gradbach mill car park further up the lane and took the first turning on the left walking past the scout camp. We used All trails to help us navigate but we didn't really need it since it's pretty well sign posted. The actual gorge was incredible and so beautiful. The steps to get into it are quite precarious so would definitely recommend appropriate footwear. And if you have dogs just be careful if they're on the lead. The rest of the walk led us close to Gradbach mill hotel and the cafe. Luckily the cafe had toilets.

Very limited human intervention and things like the stepping stones and bridges almost look part of the place. Saw many different waterbirds including a heron and ducklings. That being said depending on which car park you're coming from it's not an easy walk especially with kids - it's a risky 'path' right next to the river with rocks going up and down that are extremely slippery if they're the slightest bit wet. If you're coming from Mill Dale car park you won't have this issue - coming from or to Chee Dale car park (depending on which direction you take) is as described above. Would recommend to anyone able to do it. This was my first time hiking without a flat path and absolutely loved it - that being said it may not be as easy for everyone physically. Went on the Sunday before a bank holiday and it wasn't anywhere near as busy as usual on holidays. There were very few parts of the walk where we were alone without anyone passing by for long and majority of whom were families with younger children. Plus a lot of people abseiling too. They should probably add a sign about how to flush the toilets though since most people don't bother figuring it out. The moorland path across the top is worth looking back upon, to look along Derwent Edge in the distance. Leaving the Castles to Crook Hill, the path is decent, sometimes path stones and dirt (would be a little boggy in wet weather), but the views are lovely too. Especially towards the end, when you can look along Snake Pass to the west, and see the peaks above. It’s very quiet at first, but once you get to the forest, you see hikers and bikers exploring the area. For reference, I started my day at 9am, walking up the west side of Ladybower to Alport Castles to Crook Hill to Ladybower around 715pm, to see the sun set over the reservior around 745pm. The hike wasn’t too bad with the hardest part was the last stretch to the peak and then the last stretch heading back. Good walking boots are a must! The uneven grounds can make it difficult to walk without proper footwear. There is a cafe selling snacks, hot drinks , ice cream and bake potatoes at the upper derwent visitors centre with public toilets and a car park. This is the only place to use the toilet and grab refreshments before and after the hike. There is no internet service except with EE. The nearest train station is Sheffield. Well worth it!

There needs to be more seating,yes there is seating but only half way around if that,prams/wheelchair is only 30% around the dam so don't expect to walk all the way around,there is a couple of pubs which serve food and drink and have outside seating,recommend you drive to the dam as plenty parking,but a fantastic day out for all.
