We stopped off at Ripon Cathedral and although it isn’t that impressive from the outside, we found a welcoming working place of worship. Our voluntary and very helpful guide told us what we needed to know without being overbearing. The beautiful true medieval cathedral was built directly over a crypt dug by St Wilfrid (connection from last year’s visit to Lindisfarne) after 660AD. The spires collapsed in the 1600s and much Victorian refurbishment brings the ceilings alive. The modest, intimate crypt is a place of pilgrimage and open to the public. Although one of the oldest we’ve visited, this beautiful space is obviously still used; it felt lived in. Great find.

A wonderful architectural masterpiece. Like many religious sites it has been added to over the years. Accessible to most parts for wheelchair users, except the crypt and library.

We visited on a beautiful sunny day. The building looked at its best. It is by no means a large cathedral, but it is full of history. The staff are knowledgeable and willing to pass on their stories of the cathedral. Cathedrals can be similar, if you are prepared to look, the history is there on display.

A very sturdy cathedral. It has an honest, Yorkshire solidity to it, which I really liked. Lovely welcome at the door and plenty of interesting memorials to read and incredible tapestry work telling the story of Ripon. The carvings in the choir are amusing, especially the elephant. The crypt is very powerful - almost completely silent. Very thick provoking.

There's been a church on this site since 672 but the current spectacular cathedral was built between the 13th and 16th centuries. However, the amazing tiny crypt survives from the 7th century. It's advisable to get a guidebook as there's so much to see. The beautiful great East window above the altar, the quire and the conducting hand and the Bishops seat, organ, Medieval screen, pulpit, tombs vaulted ceilings and the many carvings some of which inspired Lewis Carroll.

Wonderful surprise, and larger than we expected. We did debate going based on the price, but are glad we did. It's across two buildings, the first is about vagrants (temporary "visitors") and the second is the workhouse.
There are great signs throughout and learnt a lot about the history of workhouses in the UK, how people were admitted, elements in them like schools, infirmaries, and sleeping arrangements, and what daily life was like. We spent about an hour, but could've taken a little longer. Very friendly and informative staff.
Facilities: clean toilets albeit slightly dated. Most is on the ground floor, but they seemed to have a lift to access the two rooms that are upstairs.

We'd bought the full access entrance tickets as we were attending all three museums (courthouse, workhouse and police)and found it quite reasonable. There was plenty to see,and it was a pleasant way to spend a few hours in Ripon. It was interesting to see just how people were treated and the disparity between rich and poor. The volunteers were very friendly, and I had a lovely encounter with Tom and Jerry.

The staff/ volunteers are so friendly and knowledgeable.
You can listen to podcasts at various points,and it really explains and shows how the Workhouses were ran.
There are a few interactive activities to do, some of which you can take home.
There is something for all ages.

A nice little museum explaining and letting you walk around the actual building where people came for help/work along with a garden with picnic tables and a veg garden to wonder around.
Staff Very friendly and helpful
Mostly on one level but there is a lift for wheelchair/pram user's to see a couple of rooms upstairs.

You can purchase a single ticket or a combined ticket which allows entry to 2 other museums 0.2 miles away.

Visited as one of 3 sites in Ripon with a combined ticket. There's been a workhouse on the site since 1776 but the present buildings date from early 1855. The stories of the day to day life for the unfortunate people who found themselves so poor and destitute that this was the only alternative for them is well presented in the preserved buildings. There's the room where inmates were first assessed for admittance, the baths and fumigation rooms, cells for vagrants, dining hall, kitchen, classroom, the garden that would have been tended by the inmates aswell as the master and matrons study and dining room.

Just a wonderful visit to the police and prison museum in Ripon. Lots to see and read about. You'll need a couple of hours to take it all in. It was nice meeting and talking with the lovely Rose on Reception.

Definitely worth a look if in the area and especially if you combine your entrance ticket with the other two museums close to each other.

This was one of the 3 museums to visit on the one purchased ticket. This is what was part of Ripon Prison between 1816-1878. It shows the history of policing and also has original cells. You can read the stories of some of those imprisoned and learn about the harsh realities of Victorian punishment.

This museum is very interesting and welcoming, if quite small. I enjoyed the police motorbike, which I was encouraged to sit on and the cell where I could pull the door closed and ponder the experience.
The staff member on the day I visited was very welcoming and friendly, encouraging me to interact with the exhibits and offering to take my photo.

Guy on reception today was poor with customer service. Made my partner feel very upset as I had to explain the concession card was for a disabled visitor and guest and I showed Pip proof of letter. Thank you sir for making the final museum experience poor. No history given. This is my second visit. I returned as I wished to share the museum with my partner and paid for the three in one pass. The police museum was a great let down I'm sorry to say.

Lovely gardens and also so well kept. Bandstand is always amazing and lots of seats so you can relax and take it all in. Toilets and a cafe plus crazy golf and a bowling green as well. The entrance gates are really lovely and we're made and supplied by The Royal Engineers who are based at Clotherhome about 1 mile away. There is also a back exit down a few stairs to bottom main road. Nice wood sculpture of Alice in Wonderland which had been there now for a good few years. Obviously Ripon Cathedral is just along the road back into city centre. Dog friendly as well.

It’s a lovely little park for the locals as you can see students and family with kids around. The gardens have some iconic statues and Alice in Wonderland wood carvings on display.
Located just next to the swimming pool but parking is a little far and it’s a short walk to the town center.

Short, but if you’re willing to take a slow pace and read all of the information put up in the courtroom, it’s absolutely worth it. The staff is also so nice! It’s actually my favorite of the three museums, but they’re all incredible, and I recommend purchasing the £19 ticket to see all three.

Nice little museum but best to join it up with the other two close b and buy a season ticket even if you don't intend going back to Ripon. For a small family a group ticket is £28 which is cheaper than buying individual tickets. Then go see the old police station and gaol and the workhouse museums. All close by.

Unfortunately we visited this last out of the three museums linked (including the workhouse and prison), as it was less interesting. The workhouse was super.
We also had no support to quieten and perhaps remove a feral family. A father with three feral children who was not able to contain them nor keep them to any reasonable standard of acceptable behaviour. They made all but one other visitor leave by their appalling ways and the man in charge did nothing to remove them. Therefore spoiling not just our visit but I'm sure all the others who swiftly vacated the courthouse.

For most of the week, this beautiful cobbled market square is a short-stay car park (maximum stay an hour). But I came here on a Thursday, when the busy and vibrant outdoor market was taking place. A wide range of stalls including fresh fruit and veg, fish, lovely cakes and pastries, local cheeses, men's and women's clothing, footwear, bags, flowers and plants, household linens and much more. There was also a barista and stalls selling freshly prepared street food. The traders were good-humoured and friendly, and there were good bargains to be found. I bought a delicious roll filled with roast pork, stuffing and apple sauce at the Yorkshire Roast Co van, and sat at the base of the obelisk to eat it and watch the world go by. An inexpensive and very pleasant lunch! There are shops and eateries all around the square, and free public toilets just around the corner from the Wakeman's House Café. The Tourist Information Office is here too.

The Ripon Walled Garden was a small piece of paradise when we visited during the Easter school break. There is a free car park by the entrance and once inside you are greeted by a small shop with refreshments and locally produced jams and chutneys. There is outdoor seating and a great play area for younger children. The gardens, woodland walk and orchard are flat with paved paths where possible. It felt very safe for two eight year olds to explore independently. Everyone we met greeted us with a smile and couldn't have been more helpful. Especially with the Easter trail that was running. We will definitely be return visitors and are looking forward to their new cafe that is planned for later in the year.

Finally getting some real value from our National Trust membership. Spent a day here exploring the Abbey and grounds. Very poignant to see the ruins and to think about the huge social upheaval of that period of history. One of the most spectacular relics of the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

The monastery ruins are beautiful and just so expansive! I couldn't believe how many parts there were, at each turn I discovered something new. They are incredibly well preserved and you can tell that so much effort has gone into keeping them safe for the public. I couldn't recommend a visit more!

BEAUTIFUL. I must say I seriously did not expect to see such an amazing place. I didn't read reviews prior to visiting and chose to visit on the off chance as I am a National Trust card holder. Easiest the best place me and my family have visited to date as card holders. Its free to enter if you are, but if not, its not badly priced considering the amount you'll see. I felt like I stepped back in history. I would definitely recommend getting an audio from the ticket office as it pointed out some amazing finds that I would not have seen if it weren't for the audio giving me information on certain areas of the abbey. The amount around the land is incredible, we walked and walked and came across endless buildings, foundations and history. The cafes were dotted around, 3 in total, and served a great hot chocolate and sausage roll was amazing. As its the easter period it was £3.50 for an Easter trial for the kids/or adults and get an Easter egg at the end of it. It was so much fun, we all had a blast with the activities set up around. 100% recommend visiting. Best trust trip to date!

Fountains Abbey is absolutely breathtaking – one of the most impressive historic sites I’ve visited in the UK. The ruins are beautifully preserved and full of atmosphere. Walking through the ancient stonework, you really get a sense of the scale and history of the place.
The grounds are huge, with stunning landscaped gardens, peaceful woodland paths, and the serene Studley Royal Water Garden. It’s perfect for a relaxing day out – we spent hours just wandering and taking it all in. The views are picture-perfect at every turn.

Went to watch the starlings mumuration and although the weather was slightly bleak, the birds did not disappoint. Was lovely to walk around the area and lots of spots to sit down for picnic or just watch the birds. Beautiful walk along the canal with a lovely bridge and great photo opportunities. We had a lovely day at Studley. The deers were hiding so no sightings, however the beautiful St Mary’s church, views and lake are amazing. We visited the tea room as well which was very nice, the staff were very pleasant and friendly.
I was on a mobility scooter and it was down hill and flat for much of the visit. A very kind gentleman at the teashop (part of the team at Studley) then gave us a lift back to the car park. Such a credit to all the fantastic staff we came across, we hope to visit again in the future.

A great expansive area to wander round and it would be easy to spend a whole day exploring all the sights. The car parking charges are fixed so can be a little steep if you are only wanting to spend an hour on a short walk, but there’s plenty of space available during busy times. A stunning café, beautiful garden, delicious food and tasty coffee, ideal for cyclists! We visited on our club ride from Leeds and bought the bikes around the back, via the alley, and sat outside. We found the staff very attentive, and James was especially helpful in helping us plan our route home! Great place for eating we called in part way through a cycle ride for lunch, very well coming and an area to keep bikes whilst eating. The food and coffee were first class and the Chocolate orange brownie a not to miss try.

After walking around the square in Ripon we came across Oliver’s Pantry. Inside there is a small counter and the seating area spreading backwards into a small courtyard. There is also seating upstairs. The cafe was busy but we got seats outside. It was not the best of weather and as our seat had no cover we were very quickly moved to another table.
We only had cake but the quality of the food was lovely. The selection of teas and coffee was very good and the whole experience was lovely. Very good pleasant and friendly staff.
Next time in Ripon will be calling in again.

Lovely hotel,straight in the town center. Surrounded with antiques, restaurants and parks.
Due to its location, it has no parking lot, and the historic building have its limitations.
Kind staff members, a somewhat standard room, I am 190cm tall,so I found the bed a bit short, but comfortable.
The view is beautiful and terrible in the same time: the catedral is astonishing, but the close surroundings are a bit wonky.
The full english breakfast was great, and the whole place have a nice, cosy athmosfhere.

We visited the Royal Oak for a couple of drinks. Unfortunately once we’d ordered the drinks there was no seating available in the front bar area. When we asked if we could perch on some free tables, one of the staff spoke to us in a very rude and dismissive tone. We then tried standing next to the bar however were told quite abruptly that we also couldn’t stand there … overall we were made to feel unwelcome and more like an inconvenience than paying customers!

This restaurant is just wonderful. We took the tasting menu, which was plate after plate of exquisitely made tapas -- our collection included delicious pickled anchovies, cheesy croquettes, warm chorizo, the creamiest and crunchies almonds in Christendom, and amazing patatas bravas. We found this place by chance and are so glad we did. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the service was great. The food was very tasty. We went for the set menu which provided a good selection of delicious dishes and gave good value for money.We only just managed to squeeze in the chocolate at the end as we had eaten so much! We were recommended to visit Manchega by my brother who is a proper foodie, and it did not disappoint. We were told they were serving their festive menu, which I was at first a bit put out by as I wanted 'proper tapas', however the choice on the menu was varied and exciting. They also had a variety of platters available and paellas. We opted for the croquettas, crab nachos and harrisa turkey pinchos. The dishes came when they were ready which is how I enjoy tapas. The croquettas were excellent, perfectly cooked, melt in the mouth and full of flavour. Crab nachos were also excellent and something completely different. However the harissa turkey pinchos were truely exceptional, who knew turkey could taste this good, the meat was moist, full of flavour and you could really taste the charcoal flavour which I loved. Wish we had ordered more. Service was warm and welcoming, with a good selection of drinks and cocktails on offer but the real standout was the food concocted by a really talented Chef. This slightly unassuming place has acquired a chef who has worked in several well known foodie establishments (three chimneys, skye and samuels at swinton) and that is absolutely apparent in the flavours and quality of his dishes. Please go, you won't be disappointed. Excellent value for money and first class food. We will definitely return again.

Me and my fiancé went to Manchega yesterday for my birthday meal. I am a massive foodie and I believe it is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Each time we have been here it has been a proper culinary experience and something you just don’t expect. Second to none. When you have the freshest of ingredients and an amazing chef you still don’t often find the whole experience to be 11/10. But with this new menu I was totally blown away with every dish. I could not recommend Richard (owner) and is team enough. The place, the atmosphere, and particularly the food is simply awesome. My no.1 spot to go if I just want to indulge in perfection.

Lovely pub well placed next to the river in the beautiful market town of Ripon.
We have the Sunday carvery. Food was well cooked and the dessert cheesecake really nice. 20 quid for two courses was good value I thought.
Service is a bit slow and chaotic which kind of let the place down. The two hardworking staff members looked absolutely exhausted when we arrived and you have to wait a fair while before the carvery is staffed to get your meal. Would go back through

Never been to this pub before and it was a great find. Staff were excellent, friendly and attentive. Pub is situated on the river bank and is wonderfully lit inside due to the large windows overlooking the water. We had two of the burgers, one with proper chicken breast and the other well stacked with 2 quarter pounders in. Both reasonably priced. Nice choice of ales with the best being "Funky Monkey". Been to Weatherspoon's hotels before so know how good they are and the service from the staff is excellent. This is no exception, clean, friendly, and a great base to go exploring the local area's.

We were staying in Ripon for a couple of nights and were fortunate enough to book in here. The pub is right in the heart of it,overlooking the main square and in a great position for shops,restaurants and sightseeing. The room, although not as big as some we've stayed in,was a decent size and had all the usual extras, such as tea and coffee facilities, an iron and ironing board and hairdryer. As well as this, Wetherspoons have this lovely gesture, where if you produce your key card at the bar,they give you a mug for unlimited coffees from the machine in the bar-well done again Wetherspoons.

A former 18th century coaching house superby restored by Wetherspoons. We stayed a couple of nights and were fortunate to have a room overlooking the historic market place. The room was a good size and clean. The staff were all friendly and efficient. Good range of cask ales and pleased to see a stout which was excellent.

After years of delay the grand opening for the new weight room area was disappointing. This part of the facility feels like an afterthought. They installed big classroom areas, massive locker rooms and a very nice pool area, then they put in a second rate cardio and weight area that appears to be smaller than the locker room.

Excellent experience. This was my first time swimming since the lockdown and my first visit to Jack Laugher leisure centre and swimming pool. The receptionist was very welcoming and didn't mind helping me when I couldn't work the barriers. Very clean, spacious changing areas, although I do have my reservations about it being mixed. Very nice clean pool. 2 lanes in operation for medium and fast swimmers. The other 1/2 of the pool was for everyone else. The water temperature was just right. Lots of disabled facilities and ample parking. I will definitely be back.

A Fantastic Family Day Out – Worth Every Penny!
We visited Lightwater Valley today and I just have to say, what an absolutely amazing experience it was for the whole family! From start to finish, it was fun-filled, magical, and truly memorable, especially for the kids.
The Easter deal was fantastic value so much to do, see, and enjoy! The park was bursting with activities for all ages, and the meet and greets were a huge hit. The characters were wonderful, warm, and so engaging with the little ones. Smiles all around!
I honestly cannot recommend the staff enough! every single team member we encountered was 100% outstanding. They were friendly, approachable, and genuinely seemed to love what they do. Their knowledge, patience, and helpful attitudes really made the day even more enjoyable.
There was a great variety of food options, too plenty to choose from and all reasonably priced. Whether it was a quick snack or a proper meal, we were sorted.
And if you’re heading there don’t miss the train ride experience! It was such a charming and peaceful moment, giving us a lovely little tour of the park and a chance to rest our feet.
We’ll definitely be back again Lightwater Valley has truly earned a special place in our hearts. A perfect day out for families, and memories that will last a lifetime!

My kids are 5 and 9 and they both absolutely loved it here. Loads of rides. We arrived at 10:30 and couldn’t get everything done in the day, not because it was busy, but because it was just way bigger than we thought.
Wait times for the rides were fine and this was during the school summer holidays.

The only thing I would say is that the Alice in wonderland ride really needs some work. Do not wait any time to get on this its current state.

If you have kids around 10 and under then this is a fantastic place for a day out. The grounds are huge, very green and really well kept. A really good variety of rides which are all tailored to younger kids, although my husband really enjoyed some of the rides too :) We took two 7 year old and they had the best day.
There are also a number of high quality play areas dotted throughout the park, including a soft play, and mini golf (we didn't do this).
The staff were all really friendly and helpful.
The queue times weren't bad at all.
We wouldn't hesitate to go again- it was well worth the 2 hour drive.

Great family day out. We went with our 7 year old and 2 year old - plenty of rides for them both to go on. We had food here which was good. The queues for the rides weren't bad at all. The longest queue we waited in was for The Ladybird but again, wasn't too long of a wait, around 10-15 minutes. The children really enjoyed this place and have asked to go back again soon.

We have visited a few times however on this occasion there was lots of rides closed, buildings deteriorating and the nets in the trees was taken down. The waiting times for food was terrible as it looked like there was not enough staff in the park. Prices were ridiculous, too. £45 for 2 adult burgers and chips and 2 kids' hotdogs, crazy.
Very disappointing visit compared to the last time and it needs a lot of work to bring the park up to the previous standards. Massive shame 😔

Brilliant theme park for under 12s.
A good variety of rides amusements. They had bouncey Castle slides and an inflatable obstacle course, and trampolines to go on for free too which was great.
There is a great 18 hole dinosaur themed mini golf at the entrance which was great, it was £3pp for a family 2A2C for £10 and it was great and loads of fun.

Newby Hall & Gardens is a stunning tourist attraction with gardens and a house. The gardens are vast and have some of the best views in Yorkshire. There is also a playground for children, a cafe, and exhibits relating to the history of the house.

a day date to Newby Hall before she was due for another round of chemo, and it turned out to be one of the most beautiful and memorable days we got to enjoy together.

Plenty for all ages, enough parking for hundreds of cars, dedicated picnic table area, beautiful gardens, historic house, several very cafes and a lively children's adventure area. Model train rides and boat rides on the river Ure. You can enter if you have a Historic Houses membership or their own annual pass but you can buy tickets on the door. New by Hall is always worth a visit when down in this area of Yorkshire. We’ve only ever visited the gardens, however they are well worth a visit on their own. They are beautiful places to walk with lots of interesting planting and great variety of spaces. The best time we’ve been was around late June when the mix of flowers is pretty spectacular, but even in mid July (our last visit) the planting was extremely impressive. A good cafe is present in the grounds and there is also the miniature railway, boat trips and the teddy bear exhibit too. A good idea to buy tickets in advance from the website

A group of us went to Newby Hall and did the tour of the house which was fantastic. The two guides were very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and answered any questions we had. You cannot take photographs in the home however.
There is the boat ride and mini steam train which all cost a little bit extra but is worth it.
The grounds are immaculate, you could spend hours walking around.
There's something for all ages here and it's perfect for a day out when the weather is dry.

I attended an event here (Ripon Triathlon Festival) rather than a race meeting, and camped for the weekend. Apart from the weather, it was a fabulous weekend and Ripon Racecourse was a great venue to hold it.
It's a very attractive setting. We were in the centre of the course with a view towards the grandstand and the fabulous lake. The facilities are very good and well suited to a camping event, with good toilets and shower facilities together with fresh water and chemical waste disposal.
The race course is within walking distance, or a short drive, to Ripon city centre where there's lots to see and do and ample shopping, pubs and restaurants. You could walk along a canal towpath to get there.

It's a brilliant day out on family days for all. Kids go free and it's less than a tenner for adults. Lots of free entertainment for the kids, there's a food truck and a bar on site however most people take a picnic and chairs. It's a very friendly environment.
Sadly they don't use the large screen anymore on the hill but it's a thrilling experience.

A wonderful bird of prey centre, with some unusual species. Staff were very friendly and the flying display was brilliant. Ringo the vulture was personal favorite, but there are some spectacular eagles and owls. In a lovely setting near an old manor in tolling countryside, a good place to spend a couple of hours or even the whole day if you aren't being dragged around by an overly enthusiastic 7 year old. We had a nother fabulous day at Thirsk Birds of Prey Centre today. We love days out here. The entire team are lovely, friendly and welcoming and have a wealth of knowledge to share. They are always happy to answered questions and their love for the birds and what they do shines through.

The staff are brilliant, very knowledgeable and so confident around the Eagles that we were totally at ease handling the birds. The birds are magnificent and so well looked after you can see the falconers have a special relationship with all of them .

We got to be really close up with a wide variety of eagles, owls, vultures, falcons and more! The staff were amazing and answered all our questions. We learned so much over the day and you can tell they are really passionate and love what they do.
The flying shows they put on are amazing. Fantastic displays. We were lucky with the weather and with the birds moods on the day.
Seeing these birds free flying around the arena is amazing, you really get to appreciate their full size and how they move as they fly.
We did the full day of flying. Well worth it.

The temple was great. The walks are all post signed, and there's a map so you don't get lost. Would definitely recommend it.

We were in the area and wanted to visit the new Sycamore Trail. I imagine in 10 years it would be worth it, but as only weeks old not worth it.
Wander around the woods and took in the wonderful views across Leighton Reservoir and the surrounding area.
Popped into the cafe for lunch. Managed to get a table inside.
The food was really nice, had a round of sandwiches each. A bit on the expensive side but worth it.
Access to parking was ok if willing to wait.

In the 12th century, Archbishop Thurston of Ripon established a hospital dedicated to St Mary Magdalen. This hospital, known as the Leper Chapel, provided care for lepers in the local area. Archbishop Thurston contributed funds for Masses to be held in the chapel and for nuns to offer support such as food, clothing, and shelter to those affected by leprosy. Although the original hospital has disappeared over time, the medieval Hospital chapel still stands today.

I've walked past this place loads and not really noticed it, so thought we'd give them a visit.
A couple of ladies were preparing for their Harvest Festival and one of them was kind enough to tell us about the church's history.
I'm not religious, but found this place amazing, they even let us have a spin at ringing the church bell...
