Located on the eastern banks of the Danube River, this architectural marvel is truly an iconic landmark in the city of Budapest, but it is also the largest building in Hungary. This is a perfect example of neo-Gothic architecture and supposedly it is also one of the most photographed attractions in Europe. We conjure with that assumption, because this building is beautiful to observe, both up close and afar, especially at night. We did not take the tour inside, so our review is limited to the exterior of the building. The reason we did not go on the tour was the negative reviews we read about how limited in scope the tour was and the steep cost of the tour itself. We were disappointed, since we had read and heard that the inside of the building is full of intricate details, ornate decorations, including a majestic staircase and the impressive Dome Hall. What made this visit even more stunning was the perfect November day, sunny and warm and there was hardly a cloud in the sky.

It looks even more beautiful at night with all the lights. It’s conveniently located near a tram stop, making it super easy to reach by public transport. Bring your own drink (water or something cold)—once you start walking up, there’s nothing available until the top, and even then, the little supermarket was closed when we arrived. 2. Stay for sunset and wait until they light up the Parliament building across the Danube—it’s an unforgettable sight. This spot captured everything I loved about Budapest in one view.

Very impressive former fortress, at the highest point in the city. Attractive architecture and panoramic views. Wait until evening when there is no charge to climb to the higher level! Great elevated viewpoint for the Danube and parliament building. Restaurants are a little pricey and insist on a service charge for not much service, but it is friendly enough, and we didn't mind paying a little extra for the location and convenience.

Such a cool experience, would definitely recommend if you’re in Budapest, feel like it has to be done! I’m not even very into churches etc and I’m so glad I went, was incredible to see the craftsmanship that went into this place. We didn’t book in advance, we turned up on a Saturday and went to the ticket shop down the road and waited for 10 minutes MAX to buy a ticket from the counter. Cost about £8 for entry to the church (we didn’t get the more expensive tickets to go onto the roof, but would probably do that if we ever went back). We went in November so right on the doorstep of this were all the Christmas markets which was really nice as we went to these afterwards. Would definitely recommend, fairly cheap and an incredible experience :)

This experience was very emotional, knowing the history about the shoes being there. Men, women and children. Very sad. No tickets needed. Very easy to get to as public transport in Hungary is amazing and very easy to get around.

Stunning memorial. It really makes you think about how fragile life is and is a stark reminder in a poignant place. The little boy boots were particularly saddening. When we visited the shows were all adorned with yellow bracelets in protest to modern day ordeals which took away from their original intention somewhat.

The bridge everyone wants to see but surprisingly quiet on a cold January day. It looks better in the dark and looks better from above. Walking over it you feel you’re a part of the engineering, which is nice.

It’s a very romantic walk along the river. So many tourists take photos here. It’s clean and beautiful. Walking the bridge seeing couples pass you by makes you feel like you want someone to walk with you too.

Thoroughly enjoyed Heroes Square - which was about a 20 min walk from our hotel so perfect to start the day. Its wide expanse and surrounding museums and castle make it a fabulous place to visit and get some great pictures whilst you’re there. There’s plenty of public transport to take you there but the walk was perfect on the sunshine and it’s a great place to take in!

A well maintained square with the heroes of Hungary looking down at you. From Arpad to King/Saint Stephen, you have them all. It takes you through a journey of Hungarian history. The square is what you see first as you step out of the station. It is even beautiful at night.

Alright for a good photo opportunity two museums nearby and the park behind it with thermal spas I think it tells stories of the Heroes who formed Hungary ,not much else to do here apart from take few photos

A perfect spot for a walk and some great photos. It’s right next to City Park (Városliget), so it’s worth spending more time exploring the area. The lighting in the evening gives it an extra charm. I was not as impressed as I thought I would be about this square. It is very large, so that is nice. And you can get very close to the statues. But, it was missing the main statue on top of the central pillar. It made the square feel incomplete. Each of the statues were very unique.

The museum did not meet my expectations in terms of planning, maintenance, and the explanation of the history behind each historical item on display. Especially considering the high ticket price and the lack of a student discount. Only one cashier was working, leading to a long line. The staff were impolite and rude. If I had to highlight something, it would be the last section, the basement prison area, which was very moving and memorable.

Excellent idea, visually nice, but misleading information and not good history museum. I was really looking forward to going to this museum. However, after leaving, I kind of regretted going there. For someone who knows nothing about the history of Hungary in the 1950s, it might be interesting, but you won't learn basically anything about the Nazi history of Hungary here. First they show you how Hungary was "robbed" by the Treaty of Trianon - that's when the first red flag comes up. Then Hungary is portrayed as only a victim of the Nazis - another red flag. And the rest of the museum is about the atrocities of the communists in the 1940s and 1950s. The museum becomes really interesting and extremely scary in the basement. Here you can imagine the suffering that people had to experience here. This is where you get chills. However, it is also the only place where you don't have paper documents to read and if you don't have a guide, you will learn almost nothing about these places. I also see it as a huge disrespect, when young teenagers are taking selfies in torture cells with a smile on their faces like if they are in Disneyland. Apparently, no one told them what was happening here and that they should have at least a little respect. And at the end they give you a guide where all those half-truths are repeated and at the end it is mentioned (as a bonus) that it is all thanks to Prime Minister Orbán. At that moment you realize that this museum is actually primarily political propaganda of the current government and history is only secondary. Personally, I see it as disrespect towards all those people who experienced real terror in this place. If you want a quality history museum, go to Prague or Berlin.

It's a nice building and the rooms are well crafted. However, it felt that most time of the tour was allocated in the communist times after the second world war and there was very slight mention of what happened in history before or during world war. This leaves the impression that this museum feels uncomfortable shedding light equally on all historical events that took place in the past. Still it was a nice experience and informative. The audioguide was quite expensive and I wouldn't suggest it since it didn't add much more info than the ones provided in brochures in each room.

A lot of interesting historic videos, photos and information. Explaination in English language is provided in each room of the museum. I really enjoyed the House of Terror museum. It's important as a means to denunce both Nazi Germany's occupation and Soviet colonization.

I was really excited to go to this museum but I felt let down as someone who has visited Berlin Prague Gdańsk who I thought done a better job I got a vibe that staff were very rude and sometimes the auido guide was not working it passed over world war 2 who just got 2 rooms. The rest of the museum is about the soviet Union very expensive tickets so I recommend if you want to learn about the soviet you would be better going to the retro museum and the only good thing about the museum is they have toilets on each floor

If you’re not sure about going inside, don’t worry as sunset is the perfect time to go anyway! The whole Fisherman’s Bastion area lights up beautifully as the sun goes down, and at night, it’s absolutely magical. The mix of city lights and colorful skies makes it feel like something out of a dream. Even just walking around is worth it. the views, the vibe, and the photo spots are incredible from every angle. I would definitely go back again just to catch that sunset turning into night.

It was a nice church right next to the Fisherman’s Bastion. We had not purchased tickets in advance, but there was not a big line, so it was fast and easy to buy them. We found the tickets to be a bit overpriced (2.900 ft for the church hall without audio-guide, almost 7 euros, going up to 4.500 ft for the audio-guide, almost 11 euros). The tower was closed, so we did not go up there, which costs more money. We asked the people responsible for checking our tickets if the tower would be closed for many days, but it seemed that they had just figured out it was closed from us. It is obviously not their fault, nor does it make this attraction “less pretty", yet it would be nice if someone had informed them so that they could inform us about whether we could go up in the tower at some other point during our visit there and maybe not “waste” an extra ticket on that day. Also, this would be a problem if people could purchase tickets for the tower online while the tower is not open. Inside the church, there were multiple exhibits, which was unique and nice. If you decide to go to this church, do not visit it after the Basilica, as the Basilica is mind-blowing and you may not be as amused by Matthia’s Church.

Simply stunning from the exterior and the setting in the castle area, by the bastion, gallery, and palace as well as the old town in general is incredible and the views from across the city are magnificent.

It was converted to a mosque during the Turkish occupation during the 1500 and 1600’s, which destroyed the original frescos via whitewashing. During the 19th century, it was given the Neo-Gothic flavor that we enjoy today. From the colored roof tiles to the incredible stained glass, this church is well worth a visit. I stumbled upon it while taking pictures of Fisherman’s Bastion… it was more interesting!

The neo-Renaissance façade is rich in detail, with statues, columns, ornate cornices, and a grand staircase leading up to the entrance – all combining to create a sense of timeless elegance. The building radiates cultural significance and historic charm, especially at dusk when it’s beautifully illuminated, giving it an almost fairytale-like quality. Although we didn’t attend a performance, simply stepping inside was an experience in itself. The foyer is truly stunning – adorned with gilded decorations, marble elements, and elaborately painted ceilings. The classical design and refined atmosphere make it easy to imagine the grandeur of an evening at the opera. Being in such a space, even briefly, offers a glimpse into the world of high art and tradition, and leaves you with a sense of awe and admiration for the beauty of the place.

My 8 year old son and I visited the Opera for a daytime showing of The Nutcracker Ballet just before Christmas, and it was absolutely beautiful! The show was amazing, with its talented dancers and fantastic set designs in such a magnificent building. Book easily and choose seats online in advance. The staff at the front door and coat check were helpful and lovely. There is no enforced dress code, so dress up as much as you desire. We arrived 30 minutes in advance, more than enough to walk inside and settle in our seats. An absolute must-see if visiting Budapest!

Visiting the Budapest Opera House today was a fascinating experience. The exterior architecture is absolutely stunning, showcasing intricate Baroque details that make it a true masterpiece. Inside, the magnificent ceilings add to the grandeur, making it a breathtaking sight for anyone who appreciates historic architecture. However, there were some drawbacks. The number of guided tours in English was quite limited, and entry was only allowed as part of a tour, which restricted flexibility. Additionally, the staff at the ticket office were unfortunately not very friendly and didn’t provide adequate information, which slightly affected the overall experience. Despite these limitations, the beauty of the Opera House is undeniable, and it remains a must-visit landmark in Budapest for architecture and history enthusiasts.

What a building the attention to detail was amazing. Such a beautiful building. They did offer tours around the opera House which was around £18, however we managed to get a box (not the best of views but they explained that)and watch the opera for £54, so not too much more but such an immersive experience. It was one of our highlights of our trip. I would definitely recommend putting it on the list of things to do.

We had a guided tour and the experience was amazing! I can totally say that this is the most beautiful opera i’ve seen! Magnificent and a precious gem that you cannot miss if you are visiting Budapest! In the end we had a short performance which gave us goosebumps! Highly recommend it!

Enjoyed a fun and lively Puccini show - The Girl of the Golden West. Fun modern staging, with solid casting. Orchestra is splendid, and I don’t think there’s a bad seat in the house sound wise. Definitely enjoy the balconies during the intermission! A sparkling wine during sunset between acts just adds to the experience perfectly.

The food court upstairs is a great spot to try traditional Hungarian dishes . I highly recommend tasting the goulash and lángos! All the vendors I interacted with were friendly and helpful, and prices were very reasonable. It’s the perfect place to experience local culture, pick up unique gifts, and enjoy authentic Hungarian flavors. I loved my visit and would definitely come back. Highly recommended!

Typical city market, but on a large scale. Plenty of items to choose from, although after a while, you do realise it's all the same things, as with most markets. Most vendors take card, but prefer cash, and most speak at least a little English. The ones we spoke with were very friendly. The souvenir level above is good, but the food counters look amazing. The perfect place to get any foodstuff if you're in Budapest for most than a few days or don't plan on eating out.

Great food stalls for authentic Hungarian dried meats and paprika etc. We were looking to take home a couple of Busojaras ornaments but the souvenir selection was on the cheap tat side of things. Like others have said it contains many stalls selling the same things but well worth a visit.

Crowded! Now that tourist season appears to be ongoing the foot traffic has picked up considerably. Nice selection of local produce, souvenirs, groceries, etc. The bathrooms require 300Ft (about $.80) in local currency. Don’t show up with big bills.

Outstanding! Definitely a tourist spot gone wild, but also full of local charm. Dining are has genuinely good options, but is crowded. Good shopping.

We went from Fisherman’s Bastion to Buddha Castle by foot, which was a nice walk. We purchased a combined ticket for the “St Stephen’s Hall Museum” and the “History Museum”, which were located in the same building, for 4.500 ft each person (almost 11 euros). The History Museum was a very big museum, starting from the top floor and leading to the caves of the castle, and it needs a lot of time to complete. St. Stephen’s Hall Museum was very small, and it needs very little time to complete. After watching these museums, we walked on the castle (which also offers other museums, yet we chose these two), where the view was very nice.

Buda Castle is one of the most captivating places I’ve ever visited. Standing proudly on the hills of Buda, it offers breathtaking views of the Danube and the entire city of Budapest. The architecture is grand yet peaceful, and walking through its open courtyards and along the castle walls feels like stepping back in time. To reach the castle, I took the Budavári Sikló, the historical funicular elevator that connects the riverbank to the top of the hill. It’s a short ride, but full of charm. The wooden cabins and the slow climb make it a unique and memorable experience, especially for first-time visitors. Once you arrive at the top, you’re greeted not only by the beauty of the castle itself but also by the stunning views of Pest on the other side. Whether you visit during the day or in the evening when the lights glow over the city, it’s an unforgettable scene. I would highly recommend Buda Castle and the funicular to anyone visiting Budapest. It’s a perfect mix of history, beauty, and magic.

Lovely buildings from the exterior but not much to see within the actual castle - a lot of it is either closed off to the public or has permanent exhibitions installed (and that too not many). Entry to the exhibitions and some rooms you need paid tickets for, but to walk around the exterior of the castle is free. Also has a funicular taking you from the bottom of the hill to right outside the castle gates. Doesn't take too long to see everything - maybe 2 hours. Worth seeing.

The castle 🏰 is superb and museum is well maintained. The view from top is fantastic. For visiting the museum, we have to buy the tickets 🎫 . However, if you hold Budapest card, you can enter without paying. Inside temperature is well maintained. And also artifacts are arranged in order. Small lockers are available to keep the bags 💼 and jackets 🧥. Overall it’s good to visit.

The view is amazing and good for a walk. The castle is pretty huge and gives the scenery view during the evening and sunset time. Good to take a snap of a photo and enjoy walking around.

One beautiful structure amongst many other stunning pieces of architecture in Budapest, with its glorious history spanning some seven centuries and multiple buildings and facades incorporating various styles adopted through time. One can see Roman styles, frescoes, but also Baroque, neoclassical styles through out. It's strategic position is pivotal in shaping the history of Budapest and indeed the last great war that liberated Budapest from Nazi control.

We visited a week before Christmas and had a lovely experience. The view of Budapest from the bastion is stunning, making it well worth the visit. However, it was quite crowded, so we had to wait for a good spot to take photos or fully enjoy the scenery.

One of the must-sees on your Budapest trip. Beautiful panoramic view. Unfortunately, the memorial closed for renovations, but we were still able to enjoy the breathtaking views of this magnificent city. Good place to go for trekking.

The whole place is under construction so you can not get in. But it was a good hike in the morning we hiked here from Bada castle through the hill trail, it was good. The best time is early morning or late evening to see the city.

Walk till the statue is really good. I went in the evening, and it was well lit, hence safe. From top you will be able to see good view of Budapest's iconic places.

A healthy hike up the hill with very nice panorama views of the city. The statue is sadly currently (July 30, 2022) under maintenance with a fence around it, but you can still get a decent look at it! Overall definitely worth the climb.

Despite being locked for renovations, the walk up the hill to the citadel was so worth it. The beauty of this area in plain autumn is beyond incredible. And the views over Budapest are simply amazing. Go and enjoy the walk, the views and the beauty around.

Awesome panoramic views in the view ponta available as you climb (hills and stairs). It’s worth the healthy and long climb but the place where the actual Liberty Statue is, in the very top of the hill, is closed off with a fence all around it. People walk around it by holding on the the fence and risking their lives. Not for the faint of heart but if you like living dangerously, by all means do it :)

ITS CLOSED So you can still get near the top but the site is under construction. At the top there is a cafe with plastic tables, it’s not a restaurant and you can follow the footpath to a series of view points. You can still get a great view but you will be disappointed if you want to get to see the statue. It takes about 20 mins uphill walk, or we went by scooter. There is a scooter park at the top by the cafe. But be warned many of the scooters are out of battery at this stage.

What a great place and a great view. While walking up the hill, there was a park in between where kids were playing. There were very nice sitting areas with a great view. The view was just mesmerizing. However, these days the statue of liberty is closed but you can still go till the top and enjoy the great view.

Still closed, the closest you can get being the steps. The climb is short but steep, better late evening. The view is incredible though, some places it all looks unkept, worth going though.

This synagogue is the second largest in the world and largest in Europe. It has a complicated and hard history, which is definitely worth learning about. This synagogue’s dedicated to preserving history and community is reason enough to visit and pay the entrance fee, in my opinion. The educational experience of their Holocaust and Budapest Ghetto exhibit was great and thorough, and the Grand Synagogue itself was beautiful and easily the most stunning synagogue I’ve ever seen. Definitely worth the trip!

This was a very emotional and chilling experience. My wife and me visited Dohány Street Synagogue during the holiday season (on Day 2 of Hanukkah). This is the second biggest Synagogue in the world and the biggest Synagogue in Europe. The price for the ticket includes the guided tour and I highly encourage everybody to wait 10-15 minutes for the guided tour. I think the guided tour happens every 15-30 minutes but it's very informative. We waited for the guided tour in English and the gentleman who was our guide was so detailed but yet so concise. He guided us through the history of Judaism, the Synagogue and then the holocaust. The architecture within the synagogue is impressive. The cemetery and the memorial are chilling. There is also a museum and a Ghetto exhibition. Overall, this was very emotional because you see the brutality of the war and the scarring effect it has left on people such as our guide. This is a must visit in Budapest. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts especially to the guide and the staff operating this place. We learned so much from this visit.

Beautiful complex with two temples, a memorial, cemetery, small museum & sculptures. Worth the visit. 3th biggest jewish temple in the world. The Tree of Life sculpture is wonderful & very meaningful.

The biggest synagogue in Europe. They provide a guide in many different languages. Beautifully restored after WW2, it is really worth visiting. Buy the tickets on their official website

Lovely island on the Danube in Budapest. Nice greenery in a lovely city. Great views back to the Parliament building from the bridge that the island is accessed from. It was especially atmospheric on the day we visited as the fog started to lift.

Depending on when you go it can be VERY busy here. It's a great place to walk around though, enjoy the parks, even go up the tower. I enjoyed it better the second time when it was quieter. It was nice to step away from the city center and just enjoy the park. Definitely worth a trip. If you get tired of walking there's a bus that runs on the island as well.

A beautiful island between the two side of Danube river offering a wide green space to relax far from the noisy city. There are various spaces to enjoy and a ~ 5.5 km walking 🚶 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️/ running 🏃 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️trail.

The best place for you who want to relax in nature. You can access the island by bus, or by foot or by bicycle. There are a lot of places to explore in the island such as old temples and a lot of statues hidden in nature. You can also rent a bike in Margaret's island for you to drive next to Danube river which is an amazing experience as well. Also there are a lot of small cafes and restaurants. The best part of the island is the musical fountain. In my opinion is a small paradise in Budapest.

It's an island surrounded by the Danube river. Very beautiful in Spring and good place for leisure activities. Good place for running and sports too. You can see the nice view of the Danube and the Parliament building from there as well. Easily accessible by bus. 😊 Enjoy your time in Budapest! 🙌

It felt great, we love to come here, it's sad when we can't due to cold weather or thunderstorms. Even We Loved seeing Animals In The Mini Zoo, We ate Ice Cream after that.
