Chateau Villemaurine was our final stop in Saint-Emilion, and it’s a great option if you're short on time. The estate boasts about 70 kilometers of the 200 kilometers of tunnels in Saint-Emilion, and our tour with the wonderful Anastasia took us deep into these historic caves.
Anastasia was an excellent guide, accommodating our early arrival, which was completely unnecessary on her part, but much appreciated.
After touring the caves and facilities, we tasted their wines. Both the Grand Cru Classe and the Grand Cru from Villemaurine were excellent! The wines, from 2020 and 2021, were still young, with vibrant fruit flavors that practically jumped out of the glass. Our favorite wine, however, came from a sister winery owned by the same family—Chateau Sansonnet. After asking a few questions about our wine preferences, Anastasia recommended the Sansonnet Grand Cru Classe. She was spot on! It was the best sip of wine we had in Saint-Emilion, and that’s saying a lot given the quality of wine everywhere we went.
Chateau Villemaurine is a perfect place to end your day, as it’s located just at the top of the picturesque village of Saint-Emilion. I highly recommend including it in your itinerary. If you're pressed for time, it offers a fantastic Right Bank experience without leaving the town. No matter what your priorities are, make sure to visit Villemaurine when in Saint-Emilion—you won’t be disappointed.
