Zoo
Zoos & Aquariums
The Detroit Zoo is a 125-acre wildlife park that houses over 2,000 animals from around the world. Visitors can explore various attractions such as the National Amphibian Conservation Center, Great Apes of Harambee, and Arctic Ring of Life. The zoo offers interactive experiences like feeding giraffes, observing sea otters racing, and walking alongside kangaroos. Additionally, it features a mini-railroad and picnic areas for families to enjoy.
The Detroit Zoo is a fantastic place to visit, offering a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature and marvel at the incredible variety of animals. The zoo is beautifully maintained, and its commitment to conservation and animal welfare is truly commendable. The spacious enclosures and naturalistic habitats ensure the animals are well cared for, which is a huge plus. However, I'm deducting one star because, surprisingly, there are no coffee or tea options available throughout the zoo. This was quite disappointing, especially for visitors who enjoy a warm beverage during their visit. Adding a coffee or tea kiosk would significantly enhance the overall experience. That said, it's still a must-visit destination for families and animal lovers!

What a wonderful zoo! Much easier to get around than the San Diego Zoo that is easy to get lost in. Price is fair as well. LOVED the penguin exhibit, it's massive! All staff we encountered were very friendly and informative. Parking is plenty and easy. Make sure to get your tickets online as it will save you a good amount and we got to skip the ticket line. Plenty of places to eat as well, even though it's still in off season. The main gift shop is closed for a remodel but there are smaller exhibit specific ones open.

As someone who has visited many zoos around the world, I wouldn’t call the Detroit Zoo the best I’ve ever seen—but it definitely holds its own and offers a solid experience. It’s well-maintained, clean, with a good variety of animals and exhibits to explore. The zoo covers a large area, so there’s plenty of space for the animals and for visitors to walk around without feeling crowded. Some highlights for me were the Arctic Ring of Life and the African Grasslands—both really well done. The enclosures seem to be designed with the animals’ comfort in mind, which is something I always appreciate. As a nature and animal lover, just being around these beautiful creatures made the visit worth it. There’s something peaceful and grounding about spending a day at the zoo, and Detroit Zoo delivered that. If you’re in the area and love animals like I do, it’s definitely worth a visit. It may not be the most extravagant zoo out there, but it’s a solid, enjoyable experience for people of all ages.

I love taking my family to the zoo! It's clean, walkable, and incredibly family-friendly. We love the variety of animals to see and the special enclosures - penguins, birds, butterflies, reptiles, and amphibians. Two surprises at our first visit was the peacocks that roam free throughout the zoo and the geese that take advantage of food dropped or given by kids. (Love the peacocks, scared of the geese). The workers are friendly and always happy to tell you more about the wildlife you're viewing. The zoo is moderately-sized, definitely able to see the entire grounds in one day. There is some construction going on currently (Apr 2025) but it doesn't take away from the experience. The food is okay, I've only eaten at Table28 and was underwhelmed. The portions are good for the price but the food tasted bland. You can bring in your own food and drinks to have a picnic at any of the tables, benches, or on the lawn space!! I have a membership but the ticket counter seems to move quickly and is open until 30 minutes before the zoo closes.

Detroit Zoo is an absolute must-see for any animal lover. With over 125 acres of land, it is home to various creatures from all over the world. I had a great time exploring the zoo and seeing all of the different species up close. The zoo remains amazing even while covered with snow ❄️, was what truly caught my attention. The frozen lakes and snow-covered grounds gave it a mystical feel. The winter wonderland appeared to be a hit with the animals as well! The zoo has a great variety of exhibits, from polar bears and penguins to giraffes and kangaroos. I loved watching the animals roam and play in their habitats. It's truly pleased me, especially the penguins, which are living in habitat-like enclosures and are frequently spotted swimming, waddling, and interacting with other penguins. As well, zoo also has interactive displays and educational programs, which are perfect for kids and adults alike. The staff at the zoo are clearly passionate about animal welfare and conservation. They clearly care greatly about animals and work hard to protect and preserve species.. It's inspiring to see! Overall, Detroit Zoo is an amazing place to visit, regardless of the season. The zoo's wide variety of species and lovely surroundings will appeal to anyone who loves animals as much as I do. 🦋🦒🦘🐫🐅...

Amazing mother-daughter day at the Detroit zoo 😁 though there were some animal exhibits closed and the train was off season, it was an absolutely wonderful day! She bought tickets online ahead of time along with the parking pass which I recommend because it saves money. We got there at 915am and had walked through all the exhibits by 430pm, and made it to a couple of them twice 🐧💕 their hrs were 9-5 that Saturday. Left us plenty of time to go back to the hotel order pizza and just relax!
Deb H — Google review
Love the zoo and supporting the animals! There is a bit of construction going on right now so it seems smaller and alot of the animals are snoozing indoors since it's hotter now, and many exhibits are under construction. But I know it'll be even more amazing when they finish! Thank you to the zookeepers and staff for all you do!
Angela — Google review
Was a beautiful day visiting the zoo today. But in my opinion the ticket prices should have been lowered due it being very early in the season and a lot of construction going on. Also noticed a lot of animals that are no longer at the zoo or have exhibits under construction. Please think about reducing the ticket prices during this time.

Located on Fourth St., the Royal Oak Music Theatre is a historic cinema transformed into a vibrant performance venue. This club-style concert space with balcony seating has become a magnet for top-tier music and comedy acts, drawing renowned performers such as Lady Gaga, The Black Keys, Wilco, and many more. Originally debuting in 1978, the theater gained popularity in 2004 and quickly became a hotspot for live entertainment by 2007.
I had an amazing experience here! Staff was very understanding and kind through getting around and finding seats. The lighting was amazing and had a caring crowd. Next time Tommyinnit comes to stage I highly recommend seeing him here, his stand up is great!
Alex C — Google review
Nice older theater, but their general admission shows can get very "squishy." Limited seats upstairs. Getting a good view depends on you being early and up front. Good variety of musical acts and comedians. Sound mix can be an issue at times as audio engineers do not take into account the room size and often crank it too loud for comfort. Nearly had my eardrums burst working an EDM type show - bass was loud from the start, but when he kicked it into overdrive the last 3 songs, it was obnoxious and unhealthy. Contracts should have decibel limits!!!
Robyn P — Google review
Stunning venue with a quaintly vintage exterior. Impeccable acoustics, gorgeous but intimate interior. My only gripe is the seating. "Folding chairs in an airplane fuselage" is how I can best describe it. It's not tier appropriately, so you're constantly trying to look over or around the heads in front of you for a view. Despite buying top tier tickets, I ended up spending the second half of the show standing on the riser behind the mixing booth, and had a completely unobstructed view for the second half.
Brian T — Google review
It's a good place. A lot of their space is standing and the concert I was there for was PACKED. I sat in the wheelchair accessible spot and there were 3 whole wheelchairs and 2 walkers the rest was able-bodied that wanted to sit. Bar prices are reasonable for a concert hall. Bathrooms. They were hard to get into with a line, not enough room for a wheelchair and a person in the walkway in or out and only 1 toilet & sink that's accessible but not a lot of room to sit and wait for it. Will also say parking was not bad I have a bigger van and don't fit into a car parking garage and it took a bit to find a spot.
Jennifer K — Google review
Awesome place to catch a show. Been here many times and seen many great bands play. It’s close to parking and the areas not too congested in traffic. A few great places to grab some food around the venue and not far from the highway.
Scott F — Google review
Very cool venue! Pretty easy to see from anywhere inside. Love coming here! Lots of parking garages close by that are pretty reasonably priced for event parking only $4 & maybe even cheaper after 5pm per signage. $6 a water is pretty pricey though 🫤
Kristen L — Google review
Saw a comedy show here and loved the theater. Architecture is fantastic. Visibility from the seats to stage is pretty good but would love extra pitch to enhance view of stage. Concessions are on the high-end. Be prepared- there is no real entry lobby. You will be wrapped around the block waiting to get in. If rain is in the forecast, a jacket and umbrella are not the worst idea
Christopher H — Google review
Great place to see musical artists. There are 3 flat levels of seating on the main level, so try to pick seats near the front of each level. That way, you are less likely to have an obstructed view.

Performing arts theater
Concerts & Shows
The Stagecrafters Baldwin Theatre is a historic community performing arts venue that offers a diverse range of shows, including musicals, plays, and other performances. The theater may be small in size, but it exudes the grandeur of Broadway with its comfortable seating and ornate decor. Local talent takes the stage here, showcasing their impressive skills in every production. The staging is always top-notch and guarantees an entertaining experience for the audience.
Never heard of this place until it was promoted on my Facebook page. Saw Beauty & The Beast last weekend. So good! The actors are insanely talented. The staff was friendly and the theater was beautiful. I don't think you could buy a bad seat in the place (just keep in mind the seating is tight!). Great price too, making productions affordable and accessible for more people. We will be back in the future!
Shelby P — Google review
It’s a nice venue. They have good snacks at a good price, don’t be cheap because it’s donation based. The ticket prices are good. All the seats are excellent. I will be back. I had some harsh criticisms of the color purple but it was still decent. I’m a theater kid so I look at many things other than acting.
AuntieMaine — Google review
Nice, little theatre. Tickets are affordable, especially if you take advantage of the $10 discount for Thursday performances. Overall, it was a fun experience. I would return in the future.
Scott N — Google review
We went to see Beauty & the Beast. The production was fabulous. The theater was beautiful, and the staff was top-notch. The only downside was that the theater was so cold that the audience had to wear their jackets.
Linda M — Google review
Cute theater that's located in the heart of Royal Oak. Seatings good but if you get stuck behind a person who's taller than you, good luck trying to see the stage. Bathrooms are close by so you don't have to miss too much of the show. Parking garage across the street which I loved.
Amy B — Google review
Stagecrafters used to be one of the premier Community theater groups in the state. The last two shows I have seen there went from mediocre to bad. The first show was Spamalot. Overall the show was well cast but the sound was absolutely atrocious. The next show I saw was Sunset Boulevard. It may be the worst production of any show I have ever seen anywhere. The cast came across poorly rehearsed and the leads fumbled with more lines than I can even begin to count. The sound was horrifyingly bad, the orchestra struggled in areas, and the set was disgustingly bad. If the goal was to make it look like Norma lived in a trailer park and shopped at the thrift store, mission accomplished. What a tragic fall from grace for a once noteworthy theater group
Chris J — Google review
As a long time Royal Oak resident, I finally checked out my first show last night. We had a great time seeing Little Shop of Horrors! The talent, sets, and music were amazing. We will be back!

Nice seats, great performances! Saw Dogfight on the second stage (upstairs) theater yesterday. Wonderfully intimate venue, and the acting, singing and harmonies were all excellent! Honest and pure emotions were amazingly portrayed in moving and raw performances. Bravo!

Farmers' market
Flea market
The Royal Oak Farmers Market is a historic venue that offers a diverse range of experiences. On Saturdays, visitors can explore an array of fresh produce, meats, cheeses, and other culinary delights. Sundays bring a lively Flea Market with over 50 vendors offering intriguing items. The market also serves as an event space for activities like food truck rallies and tasting nights.
Every Sunday is a new shopping adventure. The only year round indoor antiques and flea market in the area. Prices are reasonable and many dealers will haggle. Come early ( like 7 am ) for best selection

I went here for the antique and collectibles Sunday show. It was awesome and many cool vendors. Such unique array of items. I will certainly come back if I am in the area. Parking can be a little tough as this place gets busy.

A happenin place in Royal Oak, and a great place to host your event! We always attend the farmers market, flea market, and many other events that Royal Oak hosts here! We also had our wedding here last year. It was amazing and all of the staff (especially Paulette) are so kind and helpful. Have your wedding here if you’re considering it! You won’t regret it.

The Royal Oak Farmers Market is a local gem! It’s cute, lively, and packed with amazing vendors from all over Michigan. I love that it supports small farms and businesses—and the variety is always great, from fresh produce to handmade goods. Plus, it’s open year-round, which makes it the perfect spot to visit no matter the season! 🙂

The Royal Oak Farmers Market used to be my Saturday morning first stop. Now there is no parking, many of the vendors are gone and the prices are terrible. Sorry, but someone ruined a great thing. I hope they will consider the price to make it low.

Love the vendor selection and layout. Most vendors are inside. Seating options (if you get a pastry, coffee or smoothie) and bathroom is clean. Parking is close and free. Get there early, bring cash (although many take credit cards now) and your own bags. Be prepared to be wow'd!!!

At the Creative Arts Studio, creativity knows no bounds! This vibrant DIY haven invites everyone—from families to couples—to dive into a world of artistic expression. Whether you're in the mood for mosaics, glass fusing, or even crafting wax hands and spin art, you can drop by anytime without needing an appointment. For those looking to hone their skills further, lessons in canvas painting and pottery wheel throwing are also available. But that's not all!
My kids and I received a gift certificate. We had the absolute best time today! We will definitely be coming back but for younger children the smaller the project the better! My daughter and I finished a huge dragon but it took a long time. I'm glad she let me help her at the end. Chose a smaller project if you are with kids and you will have an awesome time!!

An amazingly friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, patient, and motivating staff navigated a full house of would be artists spanning decades in age and light years in talent. The choices of activities allowed all in our group, from age 12 to 65, to find a comfort level and an appropriate level of risk. A terrific family entertainment, well worth the time, and solidly in the “want to do it again” column!

Nestled in the heart of our Royal Oak community lies a hidden gem that promises a world of artistic delight – the enchanting pottery place where creativity knows no bounds! From the moment you step inside, a wave of inspiration washes over you, setting the stage for a memorable artistic adventure. As a parent seeking a fun and engaging activity for my little ones, this pottery haven truly exceeded all expectations. The warm and welcoming ambiance instantly put us at ease, while the shelves lined with an array of unpainted ceramics beckoned us to unleash our inner artists. What truly sets this place apart is the freedom it offers to both children and adults to express themselves through art. With a diverse selection of pottery pieces to choose from – ranging from mugs and plates to figurines and vases – every member of the family is sure to find their perfect canvas. Watching my kids immerse themselves in a world of colors and shapes was a joy to behold. Their faces lit up with excitement as they carefully painted their chosen pieces, each brushstroke adding a touch of personality to their masterpieces. It was a heartwarming experience to witness their creativity blossom in such a nurturing environment. After pouring our hearts into our creations, we eagerly handed them over to the talented team for glazing and firing. The anticipation builds as we cannot wait to go back and pick up our little masterpieces. In conclusion, this pottery place is more than just a studio – it's a sanctuary of self-expression, a hub of creativity, and a haven for families seeking a unique bonding experience. Whether you're a seasoned artist or a first-time painter, this place promises an unforgettable journey of imagination and artistic fulfillment. Bring your kids, bring your friends, and let your creativity run wild – you won't be disappointed!

We had so much fun! Our instructor was very informative and helpful. We had trouble applying our gift card to the online booking site but it was easily taken care of via emailing the staff. We can’t wait to pick up our bowls in a few weeks!

This place wasreally neat. Was looking for something to do with my 10 yr old son during break...after the holidays. This place popped up on "Little Guide Detroit"...my go to every wknd for family activities. It was intriguing and offered walk ins so we made the trek from St Clair Shores and we were not disapointed! They offer a few types of art work to work on...mosaics, glass fusion and painting poetry. (They also offer pottery classes to make your own, but requires an appointment). We chose to make gifts for my wife and painted a few pottery items. They have tables set up all over the studio, an entire wall of paint and 2 walls (and shelves in the middle) of various pottery items. You paint them up how ever you want, and then you turn them in to kiln fire and set the paint. The staff was friendly and help to two novices who aren't very artsy and they made us comfortable and gave us confidence. I can't wait to see the finished products (in a week). We will definitely come back and try the glass fusion and will also sign up for pottery classes. This place is a gem!

My boyfriend and I had a great time doing pottery painting here! We went on a Friday night and just walked in and we were able to get started right away. The staff members were helpful and friendly. They have a huge variety of items to paint and lots of colors available!! Definitely recommend for date night :)

Redcoat Tavern, a veteran British-American pub and burger joint established in 1972, offers a unique dining experience with its retro red-booth vibe. This Royal Oak staple is renowned for serving some of the best burgers in Michigan, including the original Redcoat burger topped with their secret sauce. The tavern provides a variety of beer options and is an ideal spot to unwind with friends or family after a long day.
We’ve been coming here for about 10 years. The service has always been top notch. The food is always incredible. If you want the best burger and fries you have to come here. The atmosphere is very relaxed. Definitely a unique place to go eat.

This place is famous for its burgers, and they definitely live up to the hype. However, during my latest visit, I tried the Cobb salad, and I have to say, it was one of the best I’ve ever had! Definitely a 10/10 experience 😄.
Shawn M — Google review
We stopped in for dinner on a Saturday night. It was packed, but the wait was only 15 minutes. It was definitely worth the drive and the brief wait. The burgers were exceptional and cooked to perfection. The French fries were delicious and hot. I would definitely recommend giving this place a try. The service was prompt and courteous.
EL B — Google review
Red Coat Tavern delivers one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. Perfectly cooked to order, juicy, and bursting with flavor, every bite was spot on. The fresh trimmings elevated the burger even more, and the fries were crispy and delicious - don’t forget the zip sauce and garlic aioli. The service was equally impressive—attentive and friendly throughout. While there’s usually a wait if you’re coming for dinner, trust me, it’s absolutely worth it. This place is a must-visit for burger lovers!

Just as good as always. Been coming here for over 15 years and the food and service was excellent as usual. The clam chowder and French onion soup are staple orders to start a meal. We also ordered calamari, in lieu of typical onion rings. The calamari was fresh albeit a little on the greasy side. Next time I'll return to the onion rings as a side. My wife and I split a brasserie burger and a cobb salad. Still my favorite cobb salad of all time, always fresh and extremely good portion size. My wife was a huge fan of this as well - she had never had it and wasn't anticipating such a good salad from the tavern. Of course everyone knows about the famous burgers here. They never disappoint whether you order the classic option or upgrade with many toppings options. Ours was cooked to medium perfectly. Pricing still fair and our server was excellent. She checked on us throughout the meal, got everything exactly right and kept our drinks fresh. Always a good experience whether it be a simple date night or celebrating something special. We will surely be back soon. Glad to know the joint is still very well managed.

Excellent burgers 🍔 it can get pricy once you start adding on items but as long as you know that then your fine hahaha. The onion rings are amazing as well. Then their Cajun fires are a big hit too. Great place to eat!

If you're on the hunt for a delightful Italian dining experience, look no further than Bigalora Wood Fired Cucina. This contemporary eatery specializes in Neapolitan-style wood-fired pizzas that are crafted with care, featuring a unique biga fermentation process that takes 72 hours before they hit the oven at an impressive 900 degrees for just 90 seconds.
Bigalora Wood Fired Cucina is an absolute must-visit for anyone who loves authentic Italian flavors and high-quality ingredients. From the moment you walk in, the warm and inviting atmosphere sets the perfect tone for a great dining experience. The star of the show is definitely their wood-fired pizza—the crust is perfectly crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and has that delicious smoky flavor you can only get from a true wood-fired oven. The Margherita pizza was simple yet flavorful, with fresh basil and high-quality mozzarella. I also tried their house-made pasta, which was cooked to perfection and paired with a rich, flavorful sauce. Beyond the food, the service was fantastic. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive without being intrusive. The drink selection, including their craft cocktails and Italian wines, complemented the meal perfectly. If you’re looking for a restaurant that offers authentic Italian dishes with fresh, high-quality ingredients, Bigalora Wood Fired Cucina is the place to go. I’ll definitely be back to try more of their menu!

We had a nice lunch which was slightly tainted by our table neighbors… we were seated by a table with a bunch of small, excited, loud kiddos… there was plenty of room to seat us elsewhere and yes, I could have asked to move… but by the time it became slightly obnoxious we already had drinks and an app! Aside from that the food was good. Nice menu options and a nice environment for lunch.

Had the pleasure of trying out this spot for dinner with my wife after passing by it every other day for 3 months! We tried the potato croquettes, chef salad, and pizzas. The potato croquette: - Delicious - Perfect crunch - Smooth potato filling inside Chef salad: - Nice side for the pizza - Aside from presentation, it was ok. More sauce choice and higher quality lettuce would have made it better Pepperoni pizza: - Amazing dough! Wish it was a little fluffier though - Sauce is great - Pepperoni was delicious, a little more crisp would be better - The cheese was on point with the stretch! Mediterranean pizza: - Wife loved it, but also commented on the fluffiness. - The garlic oil is a nice touch - Goat cheese was on point While the atmosphere was really nice and cozy, I do wish the 2 people seating was larger. We had a hard time fitting the pizzas on that small table. ***The service however, was perfect! Made sure to leave our server a nice tip.*** Thanks for having us, Bigalora! Will visit again in the future.

Ordered the Margherita buffala pizza and the pistachio one. The pistachio pizza had this lemon confit on it that was sooo delicious. The best part of the pizza for me. The dough was alright. I prefer something a little crunchier and didn’t love the taste of the sauce on the margherita pizza. For apps we ordered the sprouts and the fried calamari. The best part was the banana peppers which I think were also a little breaded? They were delicious. The lemon confit & the banana peppers were the best part of the meal for me. We also ordered a kids menu cheese pizza which came with a drink and ice cream. The space was really cute and loved the high ceilings. Our server was really great as well!

Great pizza 🍕 place with a broad range of options on the menu! Had to try Brussel sprouts and it was delicious with vinegar and all the seasoning! As to pizza, we took one red , salami and one white veggie! Both were great, the one with veggies turned out to be our favorite since tomatoes , 🍅 arugula and cheese 🧀 were just perfect 👍 Service was fast and friendly! And seating area on the second floor was cozy and nice with a view of the city streets through large windows!

Okay so my only real problem is that they gave me a salad with all the top Lettuce that looked fine then right underneath it was brown and a little soggy to the point where we stopped eating it, there's no way they did not know the Lettuce was like that the pictures dont do it justice but trust it was like salad you leave in the bag a few days past best by date. Wings were good, cooked well good flavor spicy which I enjoyed but too spicy for a child. Pizza was good newyork style. You have to go up a flight of stairs to get in here.

I can't say enough wonderful things about how well our server and staff took care of our large group. We ordered what appeared to be one of every available appetizer, and they were all delicious. The Dijan Salmon dinner was an amazing recommendation and I truly enjoyed the light meal. A few things to know before you go: they charge a fee for credit card purchases, you get one bill for 15 people and gratuity is included (20%).

Wow! Staying at a hotel a couple of bocks away so we decided to try it here for dinner, and we were NOT disappointed! Marvin was great, and the food was absolutely delicious! Chicken parm was HUGE (took half to go) and was seasoned perfectly. Hubby had the gnocchi with sausage and said it was FABULOUS! We both added a salad to our meals, house salad for me and Caesar for him. Had the Arancini for an appetizer, and it was soooo good! Order a pomegranate blueberry mule, and you will thank me!

My husband and I went here for our anniversary dinner. I had the "Vixen" martini and it was so good! Their Caesar salad is the best I've had in a long time. I ordered the brisket and it was delicious too! Our waiter Marvin was very friendly and attentive, he was always there before we needed him. We will be going there again. We can't wait to try out their other dishes. D'Amatos exceeded our expectations!

Beer hall
Ale Mary's Beer Hall is a laid-back gastropub in downtown Royal Oak, popular for its diverse menu that includes vegetarian and vegan options. The pub offers a casual and friendly atmosphere with indoor seating featuring an old bar setting with exposed brick and tin ceilings. Additionally, there is an outdoor patio ideal for enjoying weekend brunch while people-watching. Families can also enjoy a visit to Ale Mary's as it offers a family-friendly environment with great food options including kids menus.
I cannot get over the buffalo cauliflower! The chicken corn chowder soup was really good and I wasn't disappointed by the black bean burger. The vegan burger bun did have a hard time staying together though. The signature mocktails are fantastic and I strongly recommend giving them a try. We got a vegan milkshake to go and it was an enjoyable option for those who don't normally get to indulge in a milkshake. There's a little something for everyone here! The atmosphere is cozy and the staff are very pleasant. If you're in the area or just want a pleasant time out, definitely stop by.

I should've done this review years ago! This is a normal spot for me and my wife. The Beer Cheese Burger is the absolute best! Their Vegan menu is phenomenal! I'm not a drinker but they do have some great cocktails and beer selection. The Atmosphere is so chill, there are no TVs so it almost forces you to have actual conversation with who you come with. The staff is super friendly and will even help with Suggestions. The shakes are massive and delicious. I literally have nothing negative to say about this place. Try everything!

This place has potential but unfortunately does not hold up to the value the price you are paying should reflect . Extremely overpriced for the portion and quality (and flavor) of food. Ex: Appetizer - 5 average fried pickles for $17.5 (astronomically high) Vegan Handheld sandwiches you have pay extra $4.5 for a small fry - meat sandwiches come with fries. Sandwich size is small/medium (see photo) Flavor is mid, would recommend spending the money at another local restaurant that provides more value to their customers. Pro: the waiter was lovely and provided great service. Host was friendly as well!

First time at Ale Mary's! Had some friends and others RAVE about the vegan options, so while we were around the area, we had to stop in! So glad we did! James was our server and he was very knowledgeable and even gave us some recommendations! He had great energy and was so friendly! The food was just as described and delish, and the service was great! We came at a good time during lunch so not too busy! We will definitely visit again when we're downstate. Thank you!

We had a great experience here before a show, and our server (I believe their name was James) was awesome. Recommended great shops to check out during our time here and was a pleasure to talk to. The vegan chicken and waffles were fantastic!

We stopped in for brunch and had an amazing experience! I ordered the Mark Cuban which was a fantastic Cuban sandwich. My buddy had their breakfast burrito and said it’s the best burrito he has ever had. We even ordered their beer cheese burger which they claim was ranked top 25 somewhere lol. The bartender was really great. Was around enough to make sure we were taken care of but not too pushy. We also ordered an enormous mimosa that was probably 2 gallons. This thing got the day started off on the right food. Anytime I’m back in this part of Michigan I will stop in to Ale Mary’s. If you are looking for a spot to grab a bite to eat then Ale Mary’s is the answer!

I’ve heard a lot about this place and was excited to try it! A group of 4 of us went on a Thursday night and the only seating available was either outside or at the bar. We chose the bar since it was super hot outside. Our server/bartender, Noah, was very friendly and helpful throughout our meal. I ordered fish and chips and didn’t love them, but the tartar sauce & fries were very good. The fish was a bit mushy and didn’t have much flavor. The strawberry limeade cocktail was delicious!! Overall a good experience and I’m sure I will be back to try some other menu items!

James & Bri are great every time we come in. We always have several questions about the beers and they are always happy to answer without seemingly be annoyed. Ale Mary’s has great food and highly recommend. My wife and I always try to sit at the bar.

Barbecue restaurant
Lockhart's BBQ Royal Oak is a Southern BBQ eatery that offers a wide range of sides and comfort-food dishes. The spacious venue features large wooden tables where customers can enjoy their meals. Despite being busy, the restaurant promptly seated guests, and the server was knowledgeable about the menu and friendly. The food itself was delicious, with the catfish being particularly well-seasoned and crispy. While the Mac and cheese could benefit from a touch more salt, it was still enjoyable.
The food was good and the service was good as well. We were seated as soon as we got there and received our drinks and fried pickles within 10 minutes. Both were made well and tasted good. Our BBQ was good as well, except the brisket was a little dry. Overall I recommend trying this place out.

From the moment you step inside, the aroma of smoked meats fills the air, promising a barbecue experience to remember. The service is warm and efficient—quick to seat us and genuinely friendly. Unfortunately, that’s where the highlights end. The food, to put it bluntly, was nearly inedible. We ordered the "dino bone," a massive beef rib that arrived looking spectacular. But appearances were deceiving. Despite being advertised as smoked, the meat was tough, rubbery, and laden with an overwhelming amount of fat. The first bite was an assault of salt—so intense it was akin to eating a spoonful of pure seasoning. Curious about the preparation, we asked the chef about their process. His explanation? "It comes salty. Then we season it more." That answered that. The sides didn’t fare much better. The collard greens were syrupy sweet, followed by a heat so aggressive it lingered unpleasantly. The deviled eggs were dry and, yet again, overly salted. And as a final perplexing touch, the platter arrived with a side of plain, store-bought white bread—a choice that felt more like an afterthought than an accompaniment. As someone who truly appreciates great barbecue, I can’t in good conscience recommend this place. It’s a shame—their smoker may be running, but something is definitely missing from the recipe.

Despite looking incredibly burnt, I tried to eat this but it’s incredibly salty and tough. The greens were so spicy all you could taste was spicy. The mac n cheese was bland despite having a mound of shredded cheese tossed on top. They also charge a surcharge for using debit or credit. I will not be back.

The food was overall good. The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was nice. The Mac n'Cheese wouldn't be my first choice again for sides, it was sort of bland/uninspired. The BBQ sauces were great and the Buffalo Chicken wings were delicious.

The atmosphere was amazing! The music was jamming and not to loud. The drinks were very very good! Our server was very nice and helpful. The food was so very very good!! Chicken was juicy. The ribs were fall off the bone good. The Mac n cheese was out of this world amazing!! The brisket was so tender and juicy!! When we go back to Detroit it's a must have again!!

Kasie was an absolute pleasure of a server. We loved her. Food was spectacular, good portions and high quality. Can’t recommend this place enough! They have a lot of NA options including beer and mocktails. And I love when they give you those little wet naps to keep your paws clean. Also, prices are very reasonable!

Well, it's Father's Day and at 2:40 p.m. this place is about 3/4 full. And it's loud. With all the exposed brick, wood, concrete floor, the high ceiling, music playing too loud (at least it's a decent mix and not just whiny country) and people talking over it, loud is your only option. As busy as they are, the servers are quick and cheerful. I was welcomed & seated in under a minute. The menu is fairly extensive - but no sliced pork - so it took a bit to get through. Ended up getting the 2-meat combo with sausage and smoked chicken for $21. Comes with two sides, I could've easily gotten 4-5. Went with the vinegary slaw & collard greens which I was told are spicy. Yea, baby. There are a lot of choices that have upcharges: brisket, ribs, pulled chicken, several side dishes. Seems the listed prices are more like starting points if you're not careful. There's a large outdoor seating area that, given decent weather, would be my first choice if a conversation was desired. My server told me twice my food would be right out. This was not true. After placing my order it took 40 minutes to arrive. The sausage was delicious but cool. The chicken was moist, tender, lightly smoked and as hot as expected. The collards have terrific flavor, due in part to the bacon, and obviously it ain't kosher. There is some BBQ sauce in there, too. The vinegary cole slaw is very nice. Enough liquid to keep it moist but not messy. The sauces have nice flavor but the "spicy" one, Fire On the Red, isn't spicy at all. So, if they can drop the ambient volume, speed up the delivery, keep the food hot and check on a body after the food shows up (really could've used some more napkins!) I'd go 5 stars. I wonder how long it'll take for my bill to show up? 17 minutes after I finished eating and pushed the tray away, and started reading news on my phone, my server finally stopped by.

When I walked in the place of business was not at all packed. I waited at the front to be seated for few minutes. After looking around and still no one coming to seat me I wasn’t happy. I asked a customer at the bar if anyone was working. He wasn’t polite. Then a lady with a smirk on her face came up and replied, The waitress is busy. Can I help u. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to stay after the encounter but I was Hungry. After the waitress came I was at ease as her personality was A1!!! She was very respectful and Professional. The food was just not good at all. Very small portions for their prices. The pulled pork.. More fat than darn pork given. It was cold. After some bites I hit red meat and couldn’t eat no more after that. Mac and cheese was semi warm but still eatable. Fries were overcooked and cold. Peach cobbler was definitely not homemade as I was told. Peaches was only good thing about it. The gumbo was 🫤. Very small portions for the high prices. Maybe someone will get better food than me. Wasn’t good my first visit here.
