The Bishop's Palace & Gardens in Wells, Somerset, England is a captivating 13th-century estate that not only serves as the bishop's residence but also offers a peaceful escape with its extensive gardens surrounded by a moat. The gardens feature a tranquil pond, thriving vegetable plots, and various beautifully maintained landscapes. The palace itself provides an enchanting backdrop for events and boasts a private chapel and the evocative ruins of the old cathedral.
This was a lovely place. The part of the building that you are allowed in was great, very informative, and interesting, the people who worked there were all helpful too. The gardens were beautiful and lovely to walk around, I will return in the summer, I'm sure there'll look even better in Bloom. It costs £14 or £25 with free return for 12 months or you can get a package to visit the cathedral as well.

If you like extraordinarily well kept gardens with interesting plants and trees, a genuinely fascinating historical building, and a well presented video guide and tour, you will love this place. We didn't expect to be so enthralled by the development of a religious building and community, but quickly got a sense of how important this place has been in the city, the county, and the region. The gardens were full of surprises, including the wells from which the city gets its name. We learned a lot about how to dress a bishop, and enjoyed the swans waddling around among the visitors

Being the wedding photographer at Bishops Palace Wedding and Events Venue was an absolute joy and privilege. From the moment I arrived, I could sense the care and dedication that had gone into preparing for the big day. The venue itself is stunning, offering a variety of picturesque spots that made capturing special moments effortless. Whether it was the elegant interiors or the beautifully landscaped gardens, every corner of this venue seemed to be designed with weddings in mind. What truly sets Bishops Palace Wedding and Events Venue apart, however, is the incredible team of staff who go above and beyond to ensure everything is perfect. Their attention to detail, warm hospitality, and ability to handle every request with a smile made the day not only enjoyable but completely stress-free for the couple and their guests. I am genuinely excited to return for weddings in 2025 and 2026 and to work alongside this fantastic team once again. Thank you for making my couple’s day so magical and unforgettable. Best wishes, James Clarke at Just James Wedding Photography.

I thoroughly enjoyed strolling through the grounds. It’s going to be even more breathtaking once the trees don their leaves and the flowers start blooming. The architecture is simply magnificent. There’s also a charming little cafe serving delicious food, located outside the paid entry area, so everyone can enjoy it. I combined this visit with a trip to the Cathedral.
Frank P — Google review
Amazing spot to walk around. So much history and architecture to take in. The paid tour is worth doing. It’s a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the history of Wells, the local area and England at the time.

Went here after visiting the cathedral and had a pleasant time. The Palace was fascinating to behold and the gardens were incredibly beautiful. Entry was cheap thanks to the joint ticket option with Wells Cathedral. I very much enjoyed coming here and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Wells.
Luke B — Google review
Lovely day out, interesting place to look around and ticket prices are cheap, bought a years pass 2 adults & kids for £65 which includes events throughout the year. Clean and tidy, lots to see and the moat outside is a great place to feed the ducks and swans, and is a nice (pedestrianised) walk. Halfway down there is the entrance to a large park with kids playarea that is much more equipped and interactive than the one within The Bishops Palace grounds. Overall a nice few hours out for a family.

I have visited wells many times. With friends and family and alone. Always an enjoyable walk and the swans ringing the bell for food was a great hit with the children. Grace the female Swan is sitting on eggs so will be back soon to see the cygnets and the two teenagers who are reluctant to move on and leave their mom. I can't remember the males name gilbert ? Gideon? He is obviously very protective of his lovely mate. Lovely place for a walk again. Update 7 beautiful cygnets await your visit

Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Wells Cathedral, a 12th-century Gothic masterpiece, is adorned with over 300 sculptures on its West Front and houses a clock dating back to 1390. Renowned for its architectural grandeur, it has been described as 'the most magnificent creation' of the Gothic period. The cathedral's historical significance is evident in its secular church and subordinate buildings, making it a unique attraction that draws numerous visitors each year. Its location in the picturesque city of Wells adds to its allure.
The smallest Cathedral City in England, but so beautiful. The people are friendly, the streets clean and tidy. Stay at The Beryl if you want to really get the traditional Old English Country House vibe. The Cathedral is stunning, beautifully kept and presented. We were so lucky to get to see the Choir and Orchestra rehearsing for a concert. They were absolutely mesmerising!
Timothy M — Google review
One of the foremost English cathedrals built in the Gothic style. Although dedicated in 1239, the Cathedral has not changed much and is such a sight to behold in the beautiful city of Wells. Wells is a gorgeous city with nice locals. #visitwells

This is a truly magnificent cathedral. You’ll definitely not be disappointed. Some notable features. Medieval Architecture The library's building dates back to the 15th century and showcases traditional medieval architecture. Ancient Book Collection The library houses a significant collection of ancient texts and manuscripts, offering insights into history, literature, and knowledge from past centuries. Cultural Significance As a historic site, the Chain Library contributes to the cultural heritage of Wells and Somerset, attracting visitors interested in history, architecture, and literature. If you're planning to visit, you might want to check the library's current hours and any specific rules or restrictions in place.

I visited Wells Cathedral and was really amazed by its beauty and design. The outside has detailed carvings and sculptures that look like they are telling stories. Inside, the tall ceilings and colourful glass windows create a very peaceful feeling. The special scissor-shaped arches in the middle are very unique and something I had never seen before. The whole place shows how talented the builders were in those days. It’s clean, quiet, and full of history. A very nice place to visit, especially if you like old buildings and architecture.
Sandeep P — Google review
Beautiful gothic cathedral. Amazing carvings & figures adorning it. Would’ve loved to have seen inside but really don’t feel comfortable with paying to enter a church or cathedral. I wouldn’t have minded if they asked for a donation but charging £14 per person is very expensive.
Leonie P — Google review
Possibly my favourite cathedral I've visited in England so far. Absolutely jaw-dropping both outside and in and holds tons of history. Unlike other cathedrals I've visited, this one wasn't completely swarming with tourists which made it quite peaceful to roam around. I made sure to take my time and take in everything that this magnificent piece of architecture had to offer. I admired the incredible scissor arches of the cathedral, caught a glimpse of one of the oldest working clocks in the country and took the time to rest in the cathedral gardens outside on this warm spring day. I had a perfect time here and highly recommend anyone and everyone to visit this cathedral when in Wells.
Luke B — Google review
Very expensive than visit as we were a group of 13 and no discounts if you do not book in advance which is a shame as the tickets were 14 per person and they did not offer the combined ticket for the palace which meant we skipped the visit to the palace as it would have set us back by another 14 pounds. So disappointed that we missed seeing the palace. The cathedral was very nice and the explanations all along were very good. I liked the unique scissor arches and the stained glass though not many were good. The second and oldest working condition clock was worth waiting to watch. I am giving 3 stars because the tourists could be guided better.
Subramanian R — Google review
I was brought up in Somerset visiting Wells Cathedral from time to time with school and church trips, so a return 45 years later was a strange mix of happy memories and astonishment at all the things I missed in those previous visits! You come for the glorious west face, and the extraordinary clock, but it's the compact architecture and beautiful design that speaks. The stairs leading up to the chapter house and that room's octagonal design are gorgeous. Although the number of visitors is sometimes very high, you get a real sense that this is a building which houses a community of faith who are serious about their business.

Specialty Museums
The Wells & Mendip Museum, established in 1893, is a must-visit for museum enthusiasts and history aficionados. The museum's primary objective was to educate the public about conserving and enhancing the historical and natural environment of the Wells and Mendip area. Housed in a building dating back to the 15th century, it showcases a captivating collection of exhibits reflecting the area's distinctiveness.
An afternoon well spent. Despite the grand exterior, the interior is more vast than expected. A really nice walk of exploration indoors.
Tennessee D — Google review
We happened to spot this museum as we were exploring Wells Cathedral. The museum is across the road from the cathedral. We were welcomed into the museum by a lovely lady, who gave us some information as to the displays in each room and in which order to visit them. There are some permanent and some temporary displays. One room houses mined objects such as Mendip lead and other minerals, another display provides details about cave diving, and there was a display of pictures by local artists. It is a lovely little museum. Admission is £6 per adult, and there are concessions for children and students. A family ticket is also available for £12. Accessibility isn't very good as the building is a converted house. Some parts are quite narrow, and there are stairs to the upper rooms.
Rebecca H — Google review
Have visited Wells many times but never been in this small museum. I wish I hadn't bothered. Was met by 2 very unfriendly and unwelcoming staff at the front desk who looked bored. I paid my £6 and they just remained silent. No information was offered on how to look around the museum, where to start or even what there was in there. Also, some of the display rooms were closed or in darkness. Didn't enjoy my visit at all, was slightly shocked by the experience.
T W — Google review
Great museum, did not even know it was there an till I just walk upon it, has lots of stuff for all ages from dressing up to a place made to make it look like you are in a cave, and lots of info on cave and history around the area, and had a great talk with the staff about the town and area.
Crazyking321 — Google review
I made purely a museum visit, whilst there are frequently art exhibitions and activities held here. Delightful old school museum, mainly centred round the pioneering and lifelong archaeological work of Herbert Balch its founder. Very nice experience for adults and perhaps older children. All sorts included from geology and prehistory to local 'byegones' like a miniature replica of a Victorian antique shop and a display about an early photography studio. Wonderful icthyosaur fossil on the way in. I was not enamoured of the WW1 trench with dummies and recorded sounds, it seemed out of place to me, but loved the rest.
Justine J — Google review
Museum is quite small but has some interesting exhibits. The exhibition on the Wells Asylum was very informative
Kev P — Google review
Lovely little museum that is well worth the £4 entrance fee. The World War 1 trench exhibit is a must for those with young children. While the shops of Wells High Street exhibition is a welcome look at the past for everyone. The 18th and 19th century samplers are fascinating, but you'll need a torch because they are kept in semi-darkness to avoid the natural dyes fading. The volunteers were friendly, polite and willing to help with any questions and chatted with us as if we were old friends.(30/4/22)
Glen H — Google review
Great rock collection from Herbert Balch, the founder of the museum. Building and improvement work, funded by a Lottery Heritage Fund Grant has finished, with two upstairs galleries remodeled. Definitely a Five Star local museum, with great short exhibitions of local interest, some access problems for those who has any mobility issues due to the building being Grade 2 Listed, though.

Wells Market is a historic marketplace located in a picturesque setting, overlooked by the Bishops Palace and the Cathedral tower. The Wells Market Cross & Fountain, dedicated to Saint Andrew, adds to its charm. Visitors can enjoy shopping at the market held every Wednesday and Saturday, with occasional funfairs. During Christmas, the Wells Christmas Market offers artisan stalls for unique gifts. The market's hook-shaped layout has been a focal point for over 800 years and is surrounded by stunning architecture.
Fantastic market with lots of stalls. Right next to lovely walks around the cathedral, park and countryside. The Parsons Nose sells amazing burgers and the flower stall can’t be beat for quality, price and service. Always enjoy a mooch around!
Jo D — Google review
Good Saturday market. Variation in stall holders, interesting crafts, quality products. Disappointedly, the farmers market in the week was weak, with many of the same stalls from the weekend and not many foodie stalls. Still, a nice wander about in the spring sunshine in a nice place was worth it.
Donna T — Google review
We visited on a Saturday whilst on a weekend break in nearby Glastonbury. The market is in a wonderful setting in the historic heart of Wells. A good range of stalls selling a variety of goods.

Wells market is excellent. We went in February and thoroughly enjoyed it. Went came back last weekend and it was even better. Lots of great products and amazing food. If we lived closer we’d be going all the time. Lots or reasonably priced parking near by and Union Street car parks has public toilets.
Fallen S — Google review
Nice little market with plenty of stalls selling local and homemade products. Was glad to visit Wells on a day when the market was operating.
Luke B — Google review
I really loved this place. It was so colourful and vibrant. There was an excellent variety of stalls which sold fresh food. There were also fresh fruit and vegetable stands. There was one lovely stall which was very near the entrance to The Bishop's Palace. The clothing showcased all of the colours of the rainbow. I am far too shy to wear anything that colourful, but I can see the appeal. I also like the fact that the vendors let you look at stuff as opposed to asking several questions so that you feel obligated to buy something. It is an ideal place to spend a few hours. The Town Crier was amazing . It was extremely entertaining to see him.

Great market. Lovely local regular traders with some recent new faces; and a fantastic buzz among the shoppers. Worth a trip and some good local eateries and pubs to enjoy. Local cafes a bit generic to be appealing

Anglican church
Sights & Landmarks
St Cuthbert's Church in Wells is often mistaken for the cathedral due to its impressive Somerset stone tower and intricately carved roof. Dating back to the 13th century, with additions from the 15th century, this church boasts a beautifully painted ceiling adorned with angel figures. Often overlooked in favor of the nearby cathedral, St Cuthbert's is a Grade listed building and Somerset's largest parish church.
A beautiful church, the door was left open, and at one point, I was the only person in there, it was so quiet and peaceful. Easy to find, in a good central location.
Matthew T — Google review
Excellent parish church. On a smaller scale to the Cathedral but worth a look inside as the interior has some interesting features.
Lyndhurst — Google review
Beautiful interior steeped in history, like much of Wells, with lots of unusual artifacts to see and saviour. We met a Dutch couple who thought it was Wells Cathedral! We put them right. Free street parking outside for an hour.
Mimi V — Google review
A beautiful church in Wells. We did the tower tour which was £4 per person and you get to see great views of Wells and have a go ringing the bells. (The tower tour is only on Sundays in August and you should book in advance via their email address). The church is notable for it's appearance in Hot Fuzz and features a stunning painted ceiling. We visited the cafe afterwards and had some cream teas which were delicious. The staff were really friendly and knowledgeable about the church and its history.
James — Google review
A beautiful church that's easy to overlook, so you may want to make sure you don't. It's free to have a look around and the church has a lovely tiled floor and even lovelier ceiling. The tower is the tallest in Somerset and tours to climb it are available. Donations welcomed as medieval churches are expensive to maintain!
Ian J — Google review
Great to walk around this medieval church, no admittance charge, but we did leave a donation. For those that don't know, this church featured in the film "Hot Fuzz" so a bit of a trip down memoey lane too!

Nestled in the heart of Wells, Goodfellows has been a culinary gem since its inception in September 2004. Founded by Adam and Martine Fellows, this charming restaurant quickly gained popularity thanks to Adam's extensive experience in top-tier establishments across England, France, and Belgium. With a remarkable seven-year tenure as Head Chef at the Michelin-starred Charlton House Hotel under his belt, Adam brings a wealth of expertise to the table.
We were recommended to this restaurant by The Beryl Hotel for our wedding anniversary dinner, we hoped it would be special, it was amazing. A cozy and intimate setting, very personal and attentive service and food that was truly out of this world. Thank you all so very much! X

Amazing food as always. Tried the 5 course tasting menu. Absolutely perfect 👌
Lesley P — Google review
Went for dinner last night 05/07/2024 to "Goodfellows at 7B". We'd previously been more than 2 years ago to its previous premises in the town centre. It's now the other side of the cathedral up the road from The Fountain Inn in St Thomas Street. Despite being a Friday it wasn't full by a long chalk but this venue's quite abit larger than before. The food remains excellent and the service is good but we did think, once we'd ordered, all the courses came too quickly and we weren't allowed to relax, enjoy the wine and chat. It all felt alittle rushed. The kitchen's open to the ground floor dining room - we've seen this before at other restaurants and sometimes it works but unsure if this was the case here. We appreciate why because the patron/chef Adam Fellows holds cooking demos and it's a nice place to do so. But it didn't add to the ambience or the intimacy of the place which we appreciated at its old venue. One big plus is no loud intrusive music!
Mimi V — Google review
Wonderful small restaurant with an open kitchen so you can see the chefs doing their magic on the delight you are going to get to eat! The dishes are delightful, tasty and interesting. We were in a hurry as we had a concert to attend but we still managed to get two courses in and it convinced us we'll be back soon for a more leisurely meal.

Italian restaurant
Nestled in the charming Market Hall on Market Place, ASK Italian offers a delightful dining experience that captures the essence of modern Italian cuisine. This restaurant chain is renowned for its long, stone-baked pizzas and classic pasta dishes, making it a perfect spot for both casual meals and special occasions. The historic architecture surrounding ASK Italian adds to its appeal, as it sits just a short stroll from iconic landmarks like Wells Cathedral and the Bishops Palace.
First time visiting Wells. Popped in on the off chance of a table. Not a problem! Very friendly staff, nice surroundings. Food was excellent and arrived quickly. The final bill was less than expected. Overall, thoroughly recommend it 🙂

Absolutely lovely branch of the chain right at the centre of the marketplace. The far windows get a wonderful view of the palace and moat, even the cathedral beyond. The staff was extremely friendly and prompt. We were welcomed with a nice juice and service was very fast despite how busy the restaurant was. For someone who has a lot of Italian, it was nice to see a little different menu. The portion sizes were really good and the food, including the dessert was great. The ambience of the place is lovely and makes you want to spend some time here.

Had a lovely meal this lunchtime, the restaurant has a lovely vibe and nice views of the castle. Service was lovely, a tall young boy served us and was very attentive and even offered to take a photo of all of us. A table of 10 people and the food came nice and quickly and was lovely and the table was also cleared really quickly too. Honestly the only negative I could pick out was the toilets needed a new paint job. A very nice experience great food, great service and great atmosphere 👍👍

Had a great family lunch with our two kids. Food was excellent, like to be greeted with a touch of lemonade and the make your own ice cream sundae at the end was the highlight for my little ones. The adult pizzas were amazing too. Nice to have unlimited garlic mayo to dip as well. And the service we had from Matthew excellent, served us with a smile and most importantly was speedy and patient with our order. We’ll be back :)

Root Wells is a trendy restaurant located in the heart of Wells, offering a warm and inviting atmosphere for food enthusiasts. As the sister site to the original Root in Bristol's Wapping Wharf, it has quickly become a popular dining destination. The menu features mostly vegetarian options with occasional meat and fish dishes, all served on small plates bursting with unique and delicious flavors. The stylish yet comfortable decor adds to the overall dining experience, complemented by attentive staff providing excellent service.
Wow 😳. Hands down the best food I've eaten in ages. Service was brilliant, everything was explained, and the fact the food (sharing plates) comes out when it's ready wasnt a problem (not that it should have been one). The variety on the menu, how it looked on the plates, the flavours .... When walking home I felt sorry for those eating elsewhere in Wells. But then again...! Can't wait to go again.
Nick J — Google review
I had dinner on Wednesday (22nd January), quite an early booking which was lovely so we could watch the restaurant slowly fill up and the atmosphere grow. From start to finish the experience was amazing. The food and the service were fantastic. The menu, although not much changed from my last visit, was incredible. I ordered almost every dish from the menu to share with my table and pretty much every dish was remarkable. To top off the experience, both of my servers remembered that I had booked the table for my mother’s birthday, and added a candle to a dessert. The whole experience was very special and I appreciate the care and attention we were shown by our two serves and the kitchen team.

Absolutely lovely meal here to celebrate a birthday. We had a number of small sharing plates and as a big meat eater this place really makes vegetables fun!!

Having visited Root Wells twice now it has solidified itself, in my opinion, as one of the best restaurants in Somerset 🙌🏻 Despite the small plates, each dish proved itself to be a little shining star cleverly designed by Root to include flavours that compliment each other. Although the restaurant itself is extremely modern, the service and atmosphere certainly didn't feel intimidating. Our server was beaming with smiles and laughter, and advised that the menu changes practically daily with the produce that is on offer. Each visit has been 10/10, I would highly recommend a visit in such a great location in the centre of Wells. I'll certainly be visiting again.

Absolutely amazing! We rang in advance to double check there were vegan options and the person we spoke to was so helpful and reassuring. All the staff were so friendly, food was brilliant and the drinks were excellent. Great value food, and we loved that each dish came when it was ready so we could try one at a time before moving onto the next. Highlight of our trip to Wells, will definitely be coming back!

Wheelchair accessible entrance and ground floor loo - not accessible but manageable for me as a ambulatory wheelchair user; plenty of room in the restaurant for a wheelchair or rollator. Small plates, vegetable focused and fabulous! Incredible and unusual combinations. A beetroot, pickled grape and walnut dish was a standout. Plenty of gluten free options. Great service - attentive but not overbearing. Heartily recommend!

Strangers with Coffee is a charming little coffee shop located in Somerset's smallest city, Wells. Run by caffeine enthusiast Ivan Hewitt, the shop offers an ever-evolving menu of house blends and guest roasts, as well as a comprehensive brew bar. Despite its small size, it boasts a top-tier selection of beans and is known for its quality drinks. Visitors can enjoy delicious hot chocolate and apple & blackberry cake while experiencing friendly service.
We came to visit here from London, loved how friendly the staff and locals were to us! We genuinely felt that West Country hospitality. We had three coffees and all were delicious and of very high quality, but the cakes … the cakes were out of this world, home baked and very delicious! Clearly high quality ingredients were used as well. If we are back in Wells, this is our new go to coffee spot.

Great options and variable menu which changes throughout the week. Fantastic food. Some of it is cooked to order but most of it is already made waiting to be served and isn’t always hot, but still tasty nevertheless. Service was friendly, however you do have to queue up like it’s a school dinner with a tray. Building is quirky with seats and chairs here and there, best to go when it’s quiet and not on the weekend if you’re bringing friends. I absolutely love the fact it’s vegetarian. I can see why it’s a top spot in Somerset.

The vegetarian and vegan food looks absolutely delicious, and the coffee is strong and hot. Besides serving meals at all times of the day they also run an excellent whole food store. You can find them on Facebook and online. Oh, and they also do homeware, gifts and curiosities. Incidentally, they came 3rd out of 67 restaurants rated in Wells, and for a vegetarian restaurant that is really saying something.

I needed somewhere to have lunch whilst I work and Good Earth was on my list. This place is cosy yet full of character and life. It was busy downstairs so conveniently I went upstairs where I was quieter. My quiche salad was delicious and the atmosphere was perfect. I highly recommend this place for those who want a coffee and a chat with old friends, that’s definitely the vibe I got from the customers.

Keeps running out of the basic foods like BREAD, BEANS & JACKETS!! AT LUNCH TIME!….Ok I’ll grab a soup, sorry “ NO BREAD” only a cold garlic slice, and that will cost you extra!!! It’s winter, Soup is served with a hot crusty roll or bread! Not a slice of cold garlic bread! All three times we have visited and menus on the large board are either wiped clean in front of you or staff tell you no longer available! We had family down from Oxford and had enough of your excuses this time. Never again. The rude manager who said to us, when we left “I’ve never seen you in here before!!” Please see receipts, in photos from my bank” do better if you are independent as you keep banging on about to me. Please don’t make your problems, mine!
