After a rainy week, it was time to explore. Twenty miles from the house was the museum. Watch the informative video on the tobacco growing process before going into the museum. There were a lot of displays and I was very impressed. The 1922 Ford was neat to see.
Enjoy being able to walk through the buildings. While there, I was told that they often have a blacksmith on site. I would recommend calling a head to see if the blacksmith was going to be there or get a schedule of events.

About a week ago, the wife and I decided to go on a day date to Selma. On the way there we drove past the Tobacco Farm Life Museum and decided to turn around and visit.
It was totally unexpected but was an interesting voyage down memory lane.
The buildings found there are actual dwellings from NC's tobacco era. Equipped with description plates on each building along with fully furnished insides, you're able to got a glimpse of what life was like.
It was definitely worth the stop and an interesting slice of history.

Awesome little museum! From the 15 minute video, blacksmithing demonstration, adorable displays and fun old buildings to look at. We loved it. Great stop for our @PedrozaAdventures Instagram page!

This place was a great little stop for our family vacation. There are tons of exhibits and out buildings that you could either go in or see in. Very interesting to know the history. Fun kids area. The folks welcoming were very cordial and excited to see us. They Put lots of effort into making it a great place to visit.

Little spendy ($8 a head) for what it is but guess it costs $ to maintain the grounds. Nicely maintained displays interesting to see how things were done and people lived. Lot of work went into farming for those cigarettes if you got the time and money worth a stop.

This is a neat place to see a lot of interesting facts about tobacco farming. I gave it 3 stars because I felt 8.00 per person was a little high for what they have. But overall I would recommend this place ☺️

Very interesting museum - not only for tobacco. The daily life in the 1800s is pretty well described with some good displays. Staff was very nice. THere are some old houses to walk around.

So much fun and very historic. A must see while in the area..
Nice gift shop....clean bathrooms. Picnic area under tall pines to sit and have a sack lunch. Be sure to watch the 15 min movie on current tobacco farming....
Unique park with many creative wind-powered sculptures & events such as concerts & farmers' markets.
I was very lucky to visit the park on a windy day since that enhanced the experience. This place is totally worth it. It has a unique outdoor installation with a vast group of kinetic sculptures, all created by Vollis Simpson. These wind-powered artworks will make you enjoy a very special experience, combining shapes, colours, sounds and movement.
This is also a free public park and there is a museum just across the street in case you would like to learn more about Simpson’s creative process and the history behind these fascinating sculpture. 100% recommended if you are visiting Wilson.

🌟 Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park: Where Art Catches the Wind 🌟
If you’re ever in Wilson, NC, and feel like you could use a bit more whimsy in your life (and honestly, who couldn’t?), Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park is the place to be. It’s like walking into a Dr. Seuss book—if Seuss had a fascination with recycled metal and wind-powered art.
The park is a dazzling display of massive, kinetic sculptures made from old road signs, bicycle parts, and who-knows-what-else, all spinning and clanking together in mesmerizing harmony. It’s equal parts art gallery, junkyard symphony, and open-air carnival. You can’t help but stare at these quirky giants as they twirl and clatter in the breeze—it’s oddly therapeutic.
There are benches and open green spaces perfect for a lazy afternoon. Plus, the park hosts events and concerts, which means you can enjoy live music with a side of whirling wonder. And bonus points: it’s free to visit, making it the most affordable way to have your mind blown by a bunch of glorified weathervanes.
⭐️ Pro Tip: Visit at sunset—the golden hour lighting makes the sculptures look like they’re auditioning for a fantasy movie.
If you’re looking for a place that’ll make you grin like a kid and ponder the creative potential of scrap metal, Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park is a must-see. Just don’t be surprised if you leave with a sudden urge to build a wind-powered masterpiece in your backyard.

We love this place. New to NC and we enjoy finding cute little gems throughout the state. Not very busy, with a cute little arcade and bar across the street. I took my daughter and her best friend, then I took my mom and all three of my children. We had so much fun!!! Nice and clean, when windy it can blow up a bit of dust, so a face mask isn't bad. The kids laughed ran and played while learning the names of the different mills. Can't wait to revisit.

Amazing whirligig park. We went on a windy day, such beautiful creations. A lot of fun to check it out!
Chad M — Google review
We did a Wawa visit and then drove here with our toddlers to see the spinning whirligigs. They have an open grass park in the center, ample parking and then you look up and see all the spinning whirligig pieces made from metal, scraps, etc. I had no idea what a whirligig was and my friend suggested we visit. It is a great stop in Wilson to be outside and admire spinning and colorful art in the sky.

Pretty cool collection of local public outdoor art by a local folk artist (now deceased).
Michael C — Google review
This is a one of a kind jewel. I have been tracking the restorations / replicas and installation for about 10 years now. At the point it feels like the park is complete or close to. It is absolutely worth the detour - Vollis Simpson was a true folk artist & this is uniquely American in all the best ways.

Very beautiful facility! Completely ADA compliant with elevators and wide spacious areas throughout. Friendly and professional staff. We had a very enjoyable experience with the whole family, there are things to do for children as young as six months all the way up to 14 years old. The activities are not only entertaining, but engaging and educational. We planned to spend an hour and a half here and we ended up staying for 3.5 hours, just took our time on a Friday afternoon and it wasn’t busy so it felt like we had the place to ourselves. The planetarium is incredible and worth the visit all on its own. Accessible and clean restrooms on each floor equipped with baby changing tables.

This place is AWESOME! Easily could of spent another day playing. We loved the blending of art, science and math. The staff was super friendly, kind and knowledgeable. My son is 7 and he didnt want to leave when they were closing soon. There's so much to do and see. Not just the activities and art but the building itself was beautiful. Perfect way to spend a Tuesday in roadschool. Many thanks to everyone there for an incredibly enjoyable experience.

Wonderful place to go. It’s a historic children’s museum .the building itself is very interesting. It was a tobacco factory.
A lot events was closed the day we went. It’s fair cuz ticket only $6 under 3 free.

We had a great day today. My kids are 15 and 11 and we enjoyed our time there. Definitely worth the visit for all ages!

We were from out of town but the kids museum is awesome. I have a 2 year old and although some of the exhibits are for older kids, she still had a lot of opportunity for stimulation. When we went there was a laser light show in the planetarium and dinosaur theme. There are two floors for full interactive activities. There was also an art gallery but we didn't have time to go. If ever we end up in Rocky Mount, we will be sure to visit again!
Mary R — Google review
A great spot to bring the kids. Its a smaller version of Marbles Kids Museum in downtown Raleigh but not as crowded. The down-side is some of the exhibits are dated and need some maintenance but all-in-all, for the price of admission, its still worth it.

This is a wonderful place for the whole family. I love the planetarium, which is included with the $6 admission price.
There exhibits are changing all the time so you could see something different with each visit.
Family hiking in tranquil forest & creek fishing, plus cycling trails, horseback riding & campsites.
If I could go 4.5 stars here, I would. This is a relatively small state park, though it's still big enough to have some fun. I took the bear creek/summit loop trail after work and took my camera. This is the 10th of the state parks that I have been to, and so far it's the least exciting. No, it's not really a mountain. Supposedly, it used be an extremely long time ago, and you can see evidence every once in a while of that if you look hard enough.
When I went, I was the only person on the trail. It was overcast and had been raining for days. The river level was pretty high and the trail was flooded in a couple of spots. I just went off the path to get around those spots, so it wasn't a huge deal. Lots of poison ivy, though. It was a peaceful, almost 5 mile loop on a relatively flat trail. There are some bike trails here that seem like they could be awesome but I can't speak to those as I just hiked.
The stars of my hike were 100% the mushrooms! I don't usually geek out over mushrooms, but they were everywhere. I also saw a ton of butterflies and a really cool buck(briefly). He ran away while yelling at me. Haha. Unfortunately I couldn't get a shot of him. I was being too loud.
Worth the trip but I can't see spending more than half the day here. I'll be interested in checking it out again in the fall but the bugs here in late July were *brutal*.

Our second time here. Some great quiet trails. Some easy, some a little less easy. The nature center was great, too. There was even a live snake that the caretaker showed us
William M — Google review
We have been here a few times and have loved it each time. Everyone at the information center is friendly and welcoming. They have a pet snake named Charlie that they let people hold which is a highlight for our kids. There is a toddler friendly path right near the information building that has a lot of great interactive attractions (large rope spider web, eye spy animals hidden in the trees, instruments that sound like woodpeckers/toads, etc). We have also hiked a few of the trails. Our favorites so far are the ones that go along the creek. They do a great job of marking the trails clearly as well as providing information about the length and difficulty level of each one.

Great state park to hike and camp in. The staff were very helpful and informative. The park is under renovation until May 2025. The trails are open for hiking.

Absolutely beautiful, don’t forget to stop by the education center, the gentleman there is very knowledgeable of the park and is very friendly and helpful. Clean restrooms, plenty of parking, we didn’t stay at the campground but saw it and it was roomy , they have onsite firewood available for purchase and the sites aren’t cramped together, plenty of trees between for privacy and shade. We saw nutrias, there’s a rare mud dog that lives in the waters there. Plenty of turtles and saw the 100 year cicadas as well, the sound they make is eerie for sure.

Spent an absolutely wonderful afternoon at the park. The staff was very helpful and so friendly. The place is very well kept, the facilities and grounds were in excellent shape. There were a lot of kids at the playground area and several people were walking the trails, most with dogs. I ran several of the trails which were fun. The summit trail wore me out though. Look forward to returning to try the mountain bike trails and maybe a kayak run. Great place to visit and enjoy time outdoors with the family.

Still on our way back from Richmond to Charlotte. Just before the state line we found this beautiful winery. Good wine and great history. Nature trails through manicured woods, gardens & wetlands home to flamingoes, parrots & toucans.
This place is absolutely amazing. It was incredibly clean. Every exhibit was so well cared for and the staff were excellent from the front to the actual exhibits themselves. I was so impressed with the lack of poison ivy along the walking trails and paths. Someone clearly takes a lot of time and care when caring for their landscape. It was absolutely gorgeous. The native plants and thoughtfulness in their landscaping is noticeable. My son, 8, loved it. We will most definitely return. Huge compliments to those that care for this amazing bird park.

I had a trip to this place last year for my birthday and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. I love birds with all of my heart and everything about this place is well kept. There is a trail around the park with multiple paths that tour around to different birds. You can buy treats to feed certain birds and there's an open area where if you're lucky you may get to feed a budgie! I saw an informative talk on one of the birds, Screecher, and her caretaker is so kind and willing to answer any questions. The only odd thing about this place is its location. I was a little worried as to where I was going driving down the dirt path, but don’t judge a book by it's cover I guess! I hope to visit again one day soon!

Hanging out with elementary students for a field day trip was a great experience. The birds are beautiful, and the grounds are well kept. Peaceful walking trails. You will also find concession snacks, including ice cream. Reasonably priced for a family trip. Take the kids! Oh I forgot the playground was a hit.

Wonderful park! There are so many cool birds to see and you can feed the parakeets and flamingos for pretty cheap. The walking trails are well maintained and it's an easy mile loop to see everything. There's also a playground for kids that's easy to circle back to after you see all the birds. Great family activity!

A charming little mall with multiple rooms with items such as used furniture, vintage clothing and jewelry, an artisan gallery, antique to modern dishes and glassware and odds and ends, just to name a few... There was a lot of memorabilia inside; my husband and I had a great trip down memory lane. The mall was very neat, clean, and organized. Over 50 different booth vendors. Clean public restrooms. Varied prices throughout the mall and they seemed reasonable. It added to the small town experience.

While camping in Roanake Rapids, NC, we decided to explore the area. I'm so glad we did! We found this amazing gem; Riverside Mill Antique Mall. It's a place hidden off the path of the town/city, in a beautiful old brick building. It is extremely inviting as you are walking up to the doors. Upon entering, you realize how huge it is and vendor after vendor selling such amazing, unique antique items, furniture, and more. They even have a free coffee table if you want to warm up or need a caffeine fix; as well as free crakers, cheese, and snacks if you want a little treat. Everyone there is so nice and welcoming. If you love antiquing or just going to look and dream/reminisce, this is the place to visit! You won't be disappointed!

In winter a Beautiful Sunday noon, no snow and ice, only have the relaxing in driving, we were back to North along HW95, not too much traffic, then got a chance to look around the scenery and signs, Virginia Peanuts Exit 4 at side road big sign was attracted my eyeballs, Local product’s always are my favourite experiences in discovering the world. Peanuts are so called “longevity fruit” in my education , healthy, tasty , we have so many ways to eat it, with or without shells, also there are so many cooking recipes with meat or vegetables. Eating With shells could bring me back to my childhood, the original status of my growing period, that time we only can have chance to eat it once a year, that’s in Spring Festival-similar as Christmas in North America , many friends gathered in the tea time, chatting and gaming . No doubts, carried back many bags to home … the size each piece is big, the fruits are crunchy, just like as we ate as we educated online. So great to stop and got it, as well enjoy it.

Petersburg National Battlefield is a significant historic site that witnessed the Siege of Petersburg during the Civil War, resulting in around 70,000 casualties. This prolonged battle played a crucial role in the fall of the Confederate capital and General Robert E. Lee's surrender. The visitor center offers helpful staff, informative films, a small museum, and a gift shop. Visitors can explore the battlefields through self-guided tours by car, on foot, or by bicycle with well-marked trails and signage.
Worth checking out the batteries and forts. Five Forks was a bit lacking. The Crater is a must see.

One of the most well preserved battlefields I've ever seen, I'm unsure if any of the wooden structures are original or not, but the earth foundations of multiple forts still stand along with countless cannons. The only downside is the the visitors center closes super early.

This site is badly outdated. We set out to see the different units of Richmond Battlefield and they couldn’t be more different.
The signage and displays are so old and broken down, it is so disappointing. Clearly they lack finding. This is an important park that interprets part of our countries history, you would think that it would be held in higher regard. When all of the other parks are well cared for and this one is not.
The rangers are very nice and helpful. Most of the park is accessible and I could navigate it with my scooter. Part of the trail went into the woods and I had to turn back.

I have been driving by the exit for this battlefield for years and I finally decided to stop because I really enjoy learning about history. Nice short and sweet!

Stopped in this little store August 2022 on way back from Virginia Beach & saw the signs for buying fresh, local grown peanuts & decided to stop in. The 1st thing I noticed was peanut field's on both sides of the road as far as I could see. Upon entering the place, it has a "country-charm"feel. Very clean. The lady working. She was helpful. Almost Any type of fresh sweets with peanuts is here. I bought homemade Peanut Brittle. Amazing crunchy taste! Also, treats & sweets without peanuts too. There's such a large variety to choose from. I would definitely recommend stopping by. It's awesome & I left with a smile. Lol. Thanks Plantation Peanuts!

The best variety of Virginia Peanuts in a huge selection of flavors. Easy, clean, and very friendly with samples laid out for tough decision making. Prices are competitive to nearby Peanut retailers. Try them first. We got 7 cans.
Virginia's first plantation, this still-operating estate farm offers a peek into 17-century America.
An absolute gem of the Rt 5 historic sites, and was not busy at all when I went. Highly recommend for the gorgeous architecture, 400 year old trees, and sweeping river views.

This property is truly a gem in examining Colonial and United States history. Being the oldest continuously-run family business since 1614, the surroundings made one feel as if they were transported back in time. The tour guide provided a detailed history of the various peoples who occupied the property as well as a detailed history of the family that resided here for centuries.
Overall, this is an essential stop for those who love to explore the sites of Early American history.

An impressive plantation on the river. Many outbuildings to view.
Purchase tickets at the gift shop. $11 to walk the grounds and over $20 to tour the house ground floor. The family still lives in the house so the upstairs is closed off.
The gardens were disappointing as they were overgrown. It would be nice if a community group would volunteer to help preserve the gardens as they were probably very nice at some time in the past.
There are two magnificent old trees behind the house. The tour guide says they are over 450 years old.
There is approximately a 2 mile drive from the main highway.

Went here to celebrate my Uncle's 70th birthday 🎂. This Winery was absolutely worth the trip. Very nice, elegant, and spacious. Had a great time. Got to meet new family members and see family I haven't seen in a while. The food and service was phenomenal. Looking forward to stopping by again. One of the most beautiful Winery's 🍷 I've visited.

Having attended William and Mary, I have driven past Shirley countless times on the way to and from the town I grew up in Recently, I became aware that my 8th great grandfather, Scotch Tom Nelson, married King Carter's granddaughter and that the Carter's were involved with Shirley way back. So, I decided to go there for Garden Week and it is just so cool. On the wall were portraits of original Virginia settlers like King Carter and many of his relatives. But also on the wall was a big surprise, one of Scotch Tom's many relatives had married into the Carter family several generations after he did. Anyway, the gentleman showing me all of these paintings greeted me politely and firmly shook my hand and explained in great detail how he, Charles Carter, had come to reside in Shirley and it was cool to meet a very distant cousin who opened up his ancient home for so many strangers. Thank you for your hospitality and if you're ever on the Outer Banks I'll happily return the favor.

We decided to come on a whim the Saturday before Father's day. We were pleasantly surprised that admission to the grounds were free that particular day. The house itself was spectacular and we enjoyed.the grounds and gardens. They had an amazing 350 year old willow oak behind the house near the river. The was a very informative time-line of the history of the site found in the ice house building.

Just amazing and rare piece of history. Be proactive and book your tickets ahead online. I glad i did, we got first 11 am spot and had great exclusive guided tour of the first floor of the house, the family actually lives on the second and third floor, so you can't go there. Melissa, our guide, was highly knowledgeable and knew history of the place and about the artifacts displayed. Allow 2 hours for entire walk through, museum and outside buildings. There is also small gift shop on the properry, and winery/restaurant half a mile away if you get hungry.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is a highly respected art museum situated in Richmond, Virginia. With an extensive collection of artwork from around the world, the VMFA strives to educate and enrich the lives of its patrons through various programming and outreach initiatives.
An extraordinary museum showcasing a vast and diverse collection that spans every movement, style, and era. From classical to contemporary, VMFA offers a wonderful journey through art, highlighting the diverse richness and depth of creative expression across cultures and time periods. A must for anyone interested in art. Amazing tour guide. Also… it’s free!
My pictures are mainly relating to flowers as I went for the Fine Arts & Flowers exhibition which is held biannually. A must if you love flowers!
In addition, their restaurant, Amuse, is excellent.

It was a great experience visiting the fine arts museum as a first timer. There are so many arts to explore within the museum but even with the maps provided you can get easily lost or miss out sections although you thought you have covered the place wall to wall. I'm not a fine arts savvy but was able to experience the originals of some of the renounced masterpieces. After exploring the insides there's also a few things that are enjoyable outside around the museum so make sure you check them out as well. Forgot to mention the best part which most sections are FREE for the general admission and the FRIDA exhibition just started with additional entrance fee (or free for the members) but will be open to the public after 5th per the staff. Paid parking $6 all day is available very near the museum which also is well worth.

I recently visited the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA), and it was an unforgettable experience. The museum itself is beautifully designed, with spacious galleries and a welcoming atmosphere. From the moment I walked in, I was impressed by the stunning architecture and the wide array of artwork on display.
The museum houses an incredible collection of art from various cultures and time periods, including European, American, African, and Asian art. I was particularly taken by the Impressionist and Modern Art collections, as well as the African and Ancient Art galleries, which offered a deep insight into the rich history and diverse artistic traditions.
The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, and each piece is carefully labeled with informative descriptions that enhance the overall experience. I also appreciated the museum’s commitment to showcasing both classic masterpieces and contemporary works, which made the visit both educational and inspiring.
Additionally, the VMFA offers a variety of programs and events, from workshops to lectures, which further enrich the experience. The gardens surrounding the museum are also a beautiful spot to relax and enjoy the scenery after exploring the galleries.
The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, and I felt very welcome throughout my visit. Overall, I highly recommend the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to anyone with an appreciation for art or history. It's a true gem and a must-visit in Richmond! I’m already looking forward to my next visit.

A really nice museum that is definitely worth visiting. The staff is cordial and friendly, the exhibits are great to behold, and the architecture is gorgeous. I was there about 4 hours and couldn't finish seeing the entire museum, so I'll try to go back as soon as I can. (My visit was in December, 2024).
Hollywood Cemetery, known as one of America's premier garden cemeteries, is a picturesque resting place for many historic figures. Established in 1847, it was designed in the pastoral style to resemble a pleasant park rather than traditional graveyards. The cemetery offers dramatic scenic overlooks of the city skyline and the James River rapids. It is the final resting place for notable figures such as presidents James Monroe and John Tyler.
This is one of the most beautiful and historical cemeteries in the country. It is a great place to visit and reflect upon our short time here on this earth. People today do not talk or even think about death and their own mortality. A person has a much better perspective on life if they do. I would highly recommend visiting this special cemetery and appreciate the beautiful mausoleums and tombstones throughout the hillside.

This beautiful cemetery offers ample parking, with additional street parking available nearby. Enter through the cemetery gates, go down the hill, and the parking lot is to the right. The best view of the park can be found near Monroe’s mausoleum. The cherry blossoms here are stunning. The park is quiet, peaceful, and perfect for walking.

My husband does Way mlMarking which is an activity which is kind of tied into geocaching. It's locating interesting places. Cemeteries have lots of interesting historical places to waymark. So I've seen a lot of cemeteries. This is one of the top three cemeteries I've ever been to. It is absolutely beautiful. There are so many old trees and interesting structures and memorials. I love the fact there's no plastic flowers or decorations. We met the gentleman who gives the chores and spent time sharing the history of the cemetery with my husband and it really made the visit all that more interesting. We'll be going back soon and next time we plan on taking the tour. It's well worth the visit, even if you're not sure you're into cemeteries. It's just a beautiful place.

The Virginia State Capitol, a grand colonial-style structure built in 1785, is the oldest legislative body in the nation. She told us about the old city hall next door which has been renovated recently. We did. You’re only allowed to tour the first floor which was beautiful. The grounds of the capitol are also beautiful.

Mr. P gave an amazing tour of the Virginia State Capitol building. The amount of knowledge that that man has by the state of Virginia was overwhelming and impressive. Not one of my favorite of the 50 state capitals, but it was nice to visit. The grounds of this state capital building were like the White House. I’ve never seen a state that secure.
The White House of the Confederacy, built in 1818, served as the executive residence of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his family from 1861 to 1865. Restored to its wartime appearance, the house is now furnished with period furniture and offers guided tours showcasing its historical significance. Visitors can explore interpretive exhibits that provide insight into the tumultuous Civil War era while admiring the elegant Rococo-Revival furniture and experiencing the ambiance of social gatherings hosted by Varina Davis.
Great tour. Costs $15, $12 for students. The tour itself is about half an hour to 45 minutes, and the tours leave every 45 minutes. The building itself is pretty small.

Robert C — Google review
I didn’t go inside due to time constraints, but just standing outside stirred up a lot of thoughts—and I’d absolutely go back for the full tour.
The building wasn’t what I expected. Honestly, I’m not even sure what I was expecting. Maybe something grander or more ominous? Instead, it’s a modest Victorian box awkwardly tucked behind a hospital parking garage. It feels out of place, like history’s least self-aware Airbnb listing.
It’s much smaller than I imagined for what was once the seat of a breakaway government built on white supremacy. You’d think Jefferson Davis would have demanded something more imposing like columns, cannons, a shrine to the big egos that used to fill the rooms but instead, it’s just... there.
The most fascinating part? It’s surrounded by some of the most advanced hospitals in the country. Institutions dedicated to healing, saving lives, and moving forward. So there it sits, this relic of a failed regime, now literally overshadowed by modern medicine and progress. There’s something poetic about that.
But even from the sidewalk, the symbolism is loud—and worth the stop.

Had a really fun time at this small museum. My husband and I wanted to kill some time in Richmond and came upon this & we were blown away. The museum is smack dab in downtown in between the hospitals. We parked at the hospital parking lot and it was a quick 3 minute walk.
Andy was a delightful tour guide and she was very well versed on all things President Jefferson Davis.
This tour took around an hour and I definitely recommend it.

Nestled along the scenic banks of the James River, Berkeley Plantation is a treasure trove of American history dating back to 1726. This remarkable plantation was not only home to Benjamin Harrison V, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, but also to his son William Henry Harrison, who served as the ninth president. Visitors can explore its beautifully preserved Georgian-style house filled with authentic 18th-century furnishings and enjoy guided tours that are rich in fascinating stories and anecdotes.
The one hour tour was excellently hostessed, yet too brief. In fact, after visiting historic Westover, an 8 year renter of its west wing asked me if the cannon ball protruding out of a wall was noted by the tour guide. It was not.
The photos depict some of my unescorted walking tour with an anchor, maybe, resting at Berkeley's shoreline. Yep, I attempted to pick it up and it didn't budge.
Of note, David K Gleason's plantations of Virginia tabletop book is the resource utilized when determining the various tours that I have and will take.

Clarence was an AMAZING tour guide. My partner and I visited on 3/16 during our trip to Virginia. Clarence was so nice, charismatic, and shared a wealth of knowledge with us about the plantation. I highly recommend having Clarence as your guide!!
There is so much to see in the basement and the estate is gorgeous and well kept. We were left speechless at times because of all the fascinating details and immense timeline of the estate that was shared throughout our tour. We are grateful that the owner allows for these visits to the public — we are very lucky to have walked inside preserved history!
A tip we have is to buy your tickets online in advance before entering the property, as it is required before stepping onto it.

A beautiful botanical garden but temper expectations depending on your season. We knew going in February wouldn't be an ideal example of this place, but it still has some charm if you look for it or judge it respectfully. Scotchtown was a great experience. We arrived early on a Sunday at 11am. We met Miller at the welcome center. He was our tour guide. Even though that early we were the only 2 people there, myself and my son, he was quite enthusiastic. He gave us an impassioned , historic and entertaining tour of the house. While there check out the goats, the kitchen and the grounds. It’s quite rural there so you feel like stepping back in time. Great family trip. Thanks Miller for an awesome experience.

From the moment we stepped into the gift shop, it was clear this wasn’t just a visit—it was an experience. Miller greeted us with warmth, wit, and a clear understanding of the offerings, helping us save a few dollars with a senior discount (thanks, Mom!). He set the tone early, guiding us through the logistics while encouraging us to explore the grounds and soak in the history before the tour began.
The grounds themselves told stories in silence, allowing us to engage with the space in a reflective, personal way. But when the official tour began, Miller seamlessly picked up the narrative thread and wove it into something vibrant and alive. His energy was perfectly pitched…respectful of the weight of the history, but infused with a spark that made each room feel like a doorway to the past.
Miller’s Q&A sessions after each room added an engaging rhythm to the tour, and his deep knowledge—especially about Patrick Henry…gave us fresh insight and a newfound appreciation for this chapter of American history. The tour ended with our group visibly and audibly impressed.
I came for a casual visit but left with a desire to become a historic member of the society…solely because of Miller. His joyful presence, infectious enthusiasm, and natural storytelling abilities elevated this tour to something truly memorable.
If you go, hope you get Miller. He’s not just a guide…he’s the soul of the story.

Me, my wife, and my mom went to Scotchtown recently and it was an absolute delight! The tour guide, Dawn, was not only kind, bubbly, and knowledgeable, but also very engaging and entertaining! She used great enthusiasm and character interpretations, adding a lot of fun to the tour experience while in the main building.
The plantation was well kept, and the house was a wonderful step back in time, making it easy to imagine being there during Patrick Henry’s lifetime. There were fantastic stories and fascinating details Dawn shared that really highlighted Patrick Henry’s importance in American history, and we all are looking forward to going back again! I would highly recommend going here and getting a tour from Dawn, if you are looking for an enjoyable experience and outing! Thank you for the amazing visit!
The gift shop was also incredible! I ended up picking up new pin for my traveling backpack, and a copy of the book, “Washington’s Spies.” So many awesome things in the gift shop! I love the layout, flow, and merchandise. We also got one of Patrick Henry’s teas to try.

Visited Scotchtown on my daughter's field trip. So I'm not quite sure if they have daily tour guides, although I did see you can do a self guided audio tour. The guides we had were fantastic. Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We had one walk us through Patrick Henry's home, one guide the grounds and the last talk about traveling and difference between the Militia and Continental armies. Little bit of a history buff, especially the Revolutionary War, so I might have found it a bit more entertaining than the kids, lol. Learned quite a bit about Patrick Henry and the workings of his plantation. Farming ice for the Ice House in the winter was cool to learn and see. The property is very well maintained. They have some sheep you can go check out as well. If you have a little bit of time to kill or want to bring your kids, Scotchtown a little interesting.

Sherwood Forest Plantation, located in Charles City, Virginia, is a national historic landmark and the former home of President John Tyler from 1842 until his death. The property has been continuously occupied by Tyler's descendants since then. Visitors can explore the well-maintained grounds and take self-guided tours of the house, which includes original dependencies and a remarkable collection of trees and landscaped areas.

When able I travel for history and food. I have been to the homes, castles and palaces of kings, queens and American presidents. With its beautiful trees and unique architecture, Sherwood Forest Plantation offers an opportunity to experience American history when private citizens were deeply engrossed in the world of economic servitude, while on the verge of tearing themselves apart. Don't let the English name escape you.

We enjoy travelling to President's homes and this one we did while staying in Williamsburg. President Tyler's home was well maintained and easy to get to. There was a walking tour guide at the entrance and you pay $10 an adult for the self guided tour. The brochure was informative and thorough. You could walk all around the grounds. With two young kids it took us about 30 minutes to do. The inside tour was the priciest Presidents home tour we've seen, so we skipped it. The only thing this place was lacking was a gift shop, which is a shame since we collect ornaments and magnets from the homes we've visited. Probably because it's privately owned, but still a bummer.

The one and only thing I would recommend is more places to dine inside. They have a lot of kiosk style places to grab something at the window, but very few indoor places. Other than that, zero complaints. Clean restrooms, friendly employees, some rides were running but don’t expect to go during this event and find all rides running. This was a great way to get in the Christmas spirit!

Went for opening day today. Wasn’t too crowded given and it was a beautiful 80 plus degree day. Most of the r coasters only had one train running which made for long wait times. 21/2 hours to ride the all new Rapterra. IMO only 4-5 good coasters they rest are blah. Happy 50th!!

Such a great experience. Absolutely what I expected from a cedar fair/six flags park. All of the staff was polite, rides were fantastic. Absolutely excited to visit again next time I am in this area!!
Took the family here for a couple hours yesterday. Very nice facility. Lots of room. The ladies liked the wine. The look where he brewed beer was very good as well. We got the charcuterie tray and ate almost all of it.

Saw the sign on the side of the road, passed it and we turned around to experience the winery and tasting but when we asked for a little extra jam (even offered to pay) we were told that it was not possible. We purchased a flight of wine, we wanted to pay for a second while eating the brie and baguette and we were told "this is not possible". A glass of water, not available. We had to pay for a bottle, again, that is fine, but a glass of water?. Well, the baguette was cold and old, the brie was fine, but it cool off too quickly because of the weather.

I recently visited the New Kent Winery and was absolutely blown away by the stunning palace and exceptional wine offerings! The winery is hands-down the best in the Richmond area. I loved every aspect of my visit, from the beautiful scenery to the top-notch service.
One suggestion I do have is to consider extending the hours of operation, especially on weekends. Closing at 6 pm feels a bit early, even on Sundays. I think staying open until at least 7 or 8 pm, or even later on weekends, would allow more visitors to enjoy the winery's offerings and make the most of their experience.
Overall, I highly recommend New Kent Winery to anyone looking for a fantastic wine experience in the Richmond area. Can't wait to come back!!!

Our less than pleasant previous experience kept us away from New Kent Winery for years. Yesterday we decided to try again. Fortunately it was not busy and the gentleman behind the bar was friendly and patient as we made our selections- nothing like what we experienced on our first visit so long ago. I enjoyed my flight, and even purchased a bottle to bring home.

We stumbled across this place back in 2019 and we had to stop here again on our way back from Virginia Beach. This winery is super cute and the staff is really friendly. We picked up 5 bottles of the Sweet Virginia wine as we enjoyed it from our last visit. When we are back in Virginia again we will definitely stop here.

Great selection of wines and beers. Gorgeous setting - good selection of appetizers. Definitely going back!

We visited while it was raining and discovered that the indoor seating is a windowless cinder block room in the basement. We didn't try the wine but the beer is mostly awful with some nearing drinkable. We got some (very mediocre) soft pretzels, and the cheese that came with them was pretty inedible. Hard to think someone could try much less than this.

I enjoy going to this winery especially if I need a quick location near me to un-wine. lol The area is always clean and very welcoming. I love sitting outside with one of my favorite wines and soak it all in. The scenery is nice on a sunny day and very comfortable solo or with friends. The food is good and the people who also come visit is nice to talk too.
Massive winery on a historic 300-acre farm with tastings, restaurants & on-site lodging.
During our travels through Virginia and celebrate my 60th birthday, my husband and I discovered this amazing winery! They had an incredible selection of wine and service was wonderful. They Williamsburg Winery easily became a highlight of our visit. A truly memorable experience.

My husband and I booked a night at Wedmore to celebrate our one year wedding anniversary. About 7 years ago we came here together within our first year of dating, so it seemed fitting to celebrate a year of marriage here. We were surprised to find our reservation came with tokens for a free wine flight in the tasting room. Unlike our last visit, we booked a tour this time. We did the extensive tour which was very enjoyable. Carmen was our tour guide and we just loved him. He was very knowledgeable and personable. We enjoyed dinner at Gabriel Archer Tavern. The food was absolutely amazing. Our last trip we ate at Cafe Provençal in the hotel and while it was good, it certainly didn’t stand up to what the tavern has to offer.
We chatted with some more seasoned patrons of the winery. Many of which complained about the logo change and other changes under new ownership. I am not sure what changed about the winery itself but we far more enjoyed ourselves this time around compared to our first visit in 2018. We loved the new logo. It felt more personal to the winery. The wine glasses we received as keepsakes with the new logo actually feel like a winery glass with a beautiful corkscrew etched on them and even having the name on aside from the logo. I believe we left our glasses behind in 2018 because the “ww” was underwhelming and didn’t show where the glasses came from. We didn’t care to have something we might’ve questioned in the future about where it came from.
We do wish the tour taught us which cheeses pair well with what foods. The cheese plate and crackers, truffles and jam were tasty but I left curious what would’ve complemented each type of wine.
Staff at the tavern were amazing and friendly, but a bit too quick to jump on asking how everything tasted the second it hit the table before I could even pick up my fork. I’d have liked a moment to taste my food but no biggie.
Complimentary breakfast at the hotel was okay. I expected a better offering of food. There was no water out, only juices, and by the time we had finished our food, an employee walked up to the table to ask if we’d like water. We were the only ones dining at the time so I’m not sure why they waited til last minute.
Aside from that, our room had paper thin walls. We could hear the people above us walking, dropping things, and constantly flushing the toilet… ALL NIGHT LONG. We did not sleep a wink because of the noise. We could even make out some of their conversations. We were near the elevators and many people walking by also had overheard conversations by us. So word of caution, your private conversations are not so private in the hotel. I don’t remember so much noise our last visit. I do wish some construction/changes would take place to better this. That was our only downfall and I’m still exhausted from the night of sleep I missed out on.
Aside from all of that, we really enjoyed ourselves, walking the winery, and learning about the vineyard. We noticed some fairy lights at night, I think a lit walking trail for a late evening walk would be a beautiful addition. Since we’ve had a 50/50 experience on the noise in the hotel, we plan to stay again.
Thanks for a nice weekend getaway and one year anniversary celebration.
Bruton Parish Episcopal Church is an iconic 18th-century church located in Colonial Williamsburg, where it continues to hold weekly services. The church has a rich history, with notable restorations including the Public Magazine, Ludwell-Paradise House, Old Courthouse, and George Wythe House. Additionally, the church played a significant role in the restoration and recreation of eighteenth-century buildings in Williamsburg. This effort was coordinated by Dr. W.A.R.
Open tour spot with some volunteers inside that will spend a minute or more telling you stories about the building. It's a really old church, just ask her the year, it's awesome! Picture George Washington sitting there for Sunday service? So cool!! Building is kept up well and makes you feel like you were there. It also still has service on Sunday's, so you can even come for a service for a fuller experience (depending on your religious beliefs, I suppose). But, either way, it's truly awesome building.

I've recently started attending this beautiful historical chruch, and yesterday I had a heart warming experience at the 11 15 service and wanted to share it. I was in a dark place yesterday, I felt alone, anxiety ridden and lost. So I felt it was very important for me to make sure i attended a service, and I feel like the Lord came to me through a wonderful and kind lady whom was part of the church organization, I don't know her name unfortunately, but I wanted to do communion but I'm kind of shy sometimes and i was nervous, but for the first time I was offered communion to be brought to me, and I thought that was really beautiful and the kindness that I needed, and im so grateful for their graciousness to do that for me. So I'm hoping this review will reach her somehow, as I would like to say thank you for your compassion and kindness and through the Lord, you knew thats what I needed.

The Bruton Parish Episcopal Church is a currently operated church and was not accessible at the time of our visit. We have been inside before and the interior is lovely. This rating is based on the great outside appearance and the historic cemetery and grounds surrounding the church.

Beautiful church with so much history. It's not part of the Colonial Williamsburg organization, but there are church members who volunteer and tell great stories about the history of the church. You can take pictures in the church and then only ask for a $1 donation per person. The grounds are beautiful with grave makers from the 1700's. Beautiful and fascinating. Definitely make time to visit.

One of the major sites at Williamsburg. This is a must-see location. So much history, both inside and outside. This is just an incredible place. While most of the structures in Williamsburg were refabricated according to original blueprints and records, the church is original, and you can really feel it when your're standing in there.

Easily my favorite building in Colonial Williamsburg. As a fan of colonial-era churches, this one is certainly one of the best in the state, and it's the oldest surviving building in Williamsburg. It's free to enter, and you can see on the pews essentially a roll call of important colonial names, with George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Marshall, Patrick Henry, George Wythe, and many others. You can see the graveyard too, although they don't let you walk around in it. Should absolutely be the #1 priority of anyone looking to visit Williamsburg.

Beautiful historic church in Colonial Williamsburg. Worth a visit. Attended the Hogmanay New Year's Eve concert and it was wonderful. Really happy we went. There was no charge but you can make a donation to support the church should you wish. If you attend a free event there, it is recommended to go about 15-30 minutes early and wait in line so you can get a seat. Space is limited. If you can manage steps, there are two balconies that offer great views.

The Governor's Palace, a stately mansion dating back to 1722, was once the social center of Williamsburg and hosted glamorous events. Initially showcasing Royal authority, it later became the residence of Virginia's first two elected rulers after the Revolution. The palace burned down in 1781 but remains an iconic structure in Colonial Williamsburg. It was also home to Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson during their governorships.
Very good tour with Jackie, even if the presence of other groups meant we really had to get moving from room to room. All that remained of the building used to be the foundations, so the reconstruction work is impressive. The furniture and decor are from the time period, not from the original house. Would be interesting to have longer tours to learn more.

Great tour! Informative and interesting. Building is kept up well and makes you feel like you were there. Very cool gardens and so many neat things inside. You can even go in the basement from outside, very cool seeing how they stored food, etc.

The Governor’s Palace in Colonial Williamsburg is a breathtaking reconstruction of the original 18th-century residence of Virginia’s royal governors and early American leaders. Originally built between 1706 and 1722, the palace symbolized British power in the colony, housing figures like Lord Dunmore, Patrick Henry, and Thomas Jefferson. After being destroyed by fire in 1781, it was meticulously rebuilt in 1934 using historical records.
The palace’s Georgian architecture impresses visitors with its symmetrical design, red brick facade, and grand entrance. Inside, period-accurate furnishings, a dramatic entrance hall adorned with weaponry, and an opulent ballroom showcase the luxury and authority of colonial leadership. The gardens and grounds add to its charm, offering a serene glimpse into 18th-century life.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast or a casual traveler, the Governor’s Palace is a must-visit, providing an immersive look into Virginia’s colonial past.
Colonial Williamsburg is a 301-acre living history museum that offers a glimpse into life in the 18th century. With over 40 landmark sites and tours, it is described as the world's largest outdoor living history museum. Visitors can freely explore the area, but admission tickets are required to access historic buildings, trade shops, gardens, and demonstrations.
Our first trip to Colonial Williamsburg was unforgettable, thanks to our warm welcome from guide Ann Bradshaw at the Visitor Center. The Courthouse, Capitol, and Governor’s Palace tours were immersive, bringing 18th-century history to life. The 1775, Spark of Rebellion and 1775, The Gale from the North enactments were gripping, and the Artillery Demonstration was both insightful and exciting. Our kids (7 and 9) loved every moment, especially the palace gardens! Ann and the passionate interpreters made this educational adventure a joy. Highly recommend for families!

Had a really nice time but a lot of the buildings were closed. Lots of school tours so it was kinda loud and busy.
That being said the grounds are beautiful. You can go walk around for free (just not do the demos/tours of buildings)
Apparently they also have a Saturday farmers market that's really great.
Grounds are dog friendly!

Amazing place to visit! Very interactive. The tradespeople are really proficient in their trades and they walk you through how they do everything, which is how folks did it back in the 1700s. It’s really immersive and fun. The cannon firings are really exciting! The evening programs are fun, too. Highly recommend.

Overall experience was ultimately impacted by an ineffectual commitment to full immersion. I've added some pictures of a few of the anachronistic details that threw us back into the 21st century. Many of the buildings and attractions were interesting and educational, would recommend the printing press, the apothecary, and the blacksmith house. The bakery was severely disappointing, little more than a halfhearted snack stand. Why were there Skittles? The dog watching was delightful, very dog friendly area. However, the sites were depressingly lacking in animals. We only saw some sheep and one cow, these were definitely highlights but there were multiple empty pastures without horses. The only horses we saw were operating a carriage, this would have been very cool if this system was more entrenched in the experience. For instance, riding a modern bus from the visitor center to the attractions was decidedly more inauthentic than horse drawn carriages would have been. Also I got some apple cider that was really more of apple juice. A huge positive was the sheer amount of little streams and delightful wooden bridges. Worth mentioning again are the sheep that were very interactive. One was standing like a person, and responded to a human sneeze with several sheep sneezes. We had a great day!

You can buy tickets at the visitor center, discount for veterans. All day parking is $10. A free shuttle takes you around to the different stops. The Governor’s mansion was beautiful! There’s a tour about every 20 minutes. Shields Tavern was wonderful! Everyone should visit Colonial Williamsburg. It’s a very interesting and informative experience.

If you are at all interested in early American history, you must visit Colonial Williamsburg. Our one day tickets were $31 each and we absolutely got our money's worth.
Parking is $10 and the shuttle from the visitor center is worth taking.
I had forgotten this from a previous visit but this is not a closed off space, you can wander around Colonial Williamsburg and see some of the demonstrations and reenactments for free but in order to enter several of the buildings you must purchase a ticket.
We had a basic plan for our day so we were able to experience quite a lot.
Some of the demonstrations overlap and some of the buildings, like the harpsichord maker, were closed the day we visited so this could easily be a two day visit.
Make sure to look at the schedule on several different days since there are a variety of opportunities that vary from day to day.
The reenactors are great. Only the ones representing a specific person stay in character the whole time so their presentations are educational and entertaining.
We saw the Patrick Henry reenactor and he was fabulous. I had the good fortune to be able to have a short individual conversation with him and he stayed in character the entire time.
One of the highlights of our day was the Stables - Behind the Scenes tour. You get to see all the carriages and where they keep and care for the horses.
Order in the Court is very good but our favorite reenactment was 1775, The Gale from the North. The 'play' takes place right out in the street and it is very well done.
You can get a great experience in one day but to get the most out of this truly unique place I would plan on two or three days.

Saudé Creek Vineyards is a charming destination that perfectly blends scenic beauty with a welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for various gatherings such as weddings, family reunions, or business meetings. Nestled in the countryside yet conveniently located just 10 minutes from I-64, this vineyard offers ample space to accommodate up to 150 guests. Visitors can enjoy live music and delicious food from local vendors while relaxing on the covered porch or balcony, where fans provide comfort even on warm days.
Went here on a friday with 2 of my friends! We had a really nice time! The place was pretty crowded for 3pm and all the wines were very enjoyable! The atmosphere is great, everyone seems to be very happy and friendly here including the lady who helped us at the bar! The flowers in the back are also an amazing place to take pictures!

A group of friends and I had such a great time here! It’s an absolutely beautiful and spacious venue. The outdoor seating is expensive with multiple areas and fire pits. The views are gorgeous. The wine is lovely. I really appreciated the process they have for their wine flights. It’s is very easy to pick which one you want without being bombarded with too many choices. When you receive them, they are generous pours and are clearly labeled. They have a small bites menu but there was also a food truck there, plus live music in the outside patio. I will definitely be back!

Such a cozy place! We could spend hours there hanging by their fire place drinking the very delicious wine. My family did all their flights and a tasting. There was not a single wine that we didn’t love. They have a sweet black cat that hangs around like he’s one of the family. Very accommodating and knowledgeable staff. Will definitely be going back! Well Sunday February 9th the weather was nice so I took a walk to the winery and I decided to treat myself to the food truck I ordered something I never had before their cheese fries. They were a revelation the fries were crispy golden brown and salted to perfection and I got a big tub of cheese sauce and which to dip them in I didn't have to try to ration the sauce to fry ratio they were so good five stars 10 out of 10 if you only get one thing from the Scottish pig food truck I highly recommend the cheese fries

They made a deal of it that they don't let anyone under 21 in the "tasting room", we were sitting outside anyway because it was a nice day, but in the last 30 min before closing, I was freezing. Anyway they 'let' us come inside. Other than that, very friendly staff and great service, thet had a food truck for food that way great as week.
