The Gallery Inn is a unique and eclectic hotel located in Old San Juan, offering guests an unforgettable experience filled with art, history, and charm. While some rooms may have limitations like noise or small bathrooms, the overall comfort and ambiance of the hotel are highly praised. Guests appreciate the comfortable beds, beautiful views from the rooftop terrace, delicious food at the attached restaurant The Cannon Club, and the friendly staff. The open-air design of the hotel adds to its character despite some minor cleanliness issues. Visitors highlight the artistic decor throughout the property, including sculptures and paintings by owner Jan D’Esopo.
Who ever said this hotel was bad has zero taste. The owner is the most iconic woman I’ve met. The food the staff the art this is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been.
The owner decorated and made the sculptures. She put her heart and soul
Into this place.
The parots are the main attraction I love this place so much.
Don’t stay in the family suite if you want lights and electricity. Such a shame I have to leave this terrible review of a place that we so loved visiting last year! We brought my mother for her 65th birthday and stayed in a two room family suite. One entire half of the suite had no electricity! The lights would flash and blink and gradually dim out to nothing. We had to just sit there in the dark unable to even charge our phones. We know it’s an old historic hotel- that’s what we so love about it! But no electricity and in fact dangerous electricity that could have shorted out or caused a fire is unacceptable. We brought this to the attention of the front desk on several occasions and were told oh yeah this happens sometimes, thought we had it fixed. Then we were told oh the electrician is here give us your keys and he will fix it. So then we were locked out of our room for over an hour. And they never fixed it!! We had to beg them to give us a hour extension on to our check out time to make up for the lock out which they begrudgingly did. The worst part of it all is that no one seemed to care in the least! The front desk staff barely could be bothered to say a genuine “I’m so sorry this happened, what can we do to make it right” All we got was a curt, dead behind the eyes “I’m sorry” - let alone did they even pretend to consider discounting the room or even something as simple as “why don’t you head up to our bar, have a drink on us while we try to figure something out” pretty much customer service 101.I’ve heard people complain about the place is dirty/moldy/musty/dusty- this is not that. We love the quirks and charms of this place. Electricity is a bare minimum basic need. Not too much to ask. Emails went unanswered. Until I had to call and say hi can someone please address my concerns??? and they sat on the phone reading the email and then said we are not going to do anything about this and hung up on me! It’s truly sad because Jan created an iconic place that I fear is now going the way of we don’t care about our customers the ones who make us what we are, the ones who pay the bills, the ones who funded her empire. We had loved recommending this place to friends, and thought it would be someplace we came back to every year. Sadly, unless someone from ownership or management contacts me to just genuinely apologize (and maybe train your front desk to show some human emotions) that’s all I’m asking for really, at minimum, we won’t ever return and will never recommend it again.
What an absolute haven in San Juan! This was my favorite stay in our trip, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s close to everything, it is a breathtakingly beautiful location, full of art and culture from the island, not to mention the sweet winged creatures that live here (Campeche is a star!). I’d come back every year if I could! Just lovely! Thank you to the owner for sharing this treasure with the rest of the world!
I don’t usually like to post negative reviews, and went back and forth with whether to post this one. Ultimately I decided to because of what in my view is a health risk. We booked the room called “Sam” and immediately upon entering it we could smell the mold. So much so that we had to leave immediately to take a walk to try and let it air out a bit before we went to bed. Unfortunately it was not much better when we came back, and there was no one at the front desk to try to change rooms. It was not bearable for us as we are both allergic to black mold, not to mention the documented health risks associated with it, so we fled for the nearest available hotel at midnight. I’m not giving this one star because the other rooms may be perfectly fine and the staff offered us a full refund when we called the next day. But I do want to warn folks at least not to rent this particular room, as it could make you sick.
It’s a shame because we weee really excited about staying there, and the main lobby and lounge area were full of charm and good vibes. We just couldn’t bear the mold, as well as the dingy decor that looked (but for the bed, which had clean fresh sheets) as though it had been scrounged from the side of the road and was covered in cat fur— another issue as my partner is allergic to cats as well.
We only got one photo as we left in a hurry but hopefully that helps to reference to avoid booking it. Again the other rooms may be perfectly fine, but this one should not be inhabited.
This hotel has all the charm you can wish for, the decor is unique and the history is amazing. It really feels special. And they have giant parrots! However, the rooms are where they lack severely, they seem to be complete afterthought with peeling paint, water leak stains, bathrooms that barely work and showers that run out of hot water. Even furniture looks like it was never cleaned. So, a mixed bag. If you don't really care about the room or comfort and hygiene then it is an amazing place.
