Bodrum City

Bodrum is a city on the Bodrum Peninsula, stretching from Turkey's southwest coast into the Aegean Sea. The city features twin bays with views of Bodrum Castle. This medieval fortress was built partly with stones from the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, completed in the 4th century B.C. The city is also a gateway for nearby beach towns and resorts.

Bodrum Castle, also known as the Castle of St. Peter or Petronium, is a historic landmark in Bodrum overlooking the international port. Built in the 15th century by the Knights of Rhodes, it has served various purposes over time including a church and a mosque during the Ottoman Empire. Today, it houses a significant underwater archaeology museum and was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016.
There are many things you can enjoy inside of the castle if you like historical facts and landscape. I wish the weather would have been better because it rained quite a lot and it was windy as well. You can go right side after entering the gate, which is the right way to start your tour.

Still impressed with the dimension of the collection this castle has… I don’t think I’ve heard of anything like it before. If you’re planning on visiting, it will take at least 1 hour and a half to two hours for you to see everything. It’s very detailed and organized with different shipwrecks, history times and types of objects. So interesting, you’re exploring what they found underwater in a beautiful castle with views over the city. Totally recommend 🏰🏺

Others say it's pricey, I think it's worth the money. We have spent around 2.5 hours walking around the castle grounds and visiting all the exhibitions.

Bodrum Castle is a great place to visit! The views are beautiful, making it perfect for taking amazing pictures of the surrounding area. Plus, there are lots of cute cats around to cuddle, which adds to the charm. A must-visit if you’re in the area!

An enchanting evening and exclusive dinner at Bodrum Castle on the Aegean. The castle was built in 1402; it is incredible to think the ruins under the mosque at Bodrum Castle date back to the 4th century BC. Relics here include ancient amphoras and stone anchors along with beautifully carved columns and statues. The castle served as a stunning backdrop for a beautiful dinner. Many thanks to Go Türkiye for hosting this wonderful evening.

Fabulous castle. Lots of displays of ancient artefacts. On the rocks/cliff overlooking the harbour. We received a brilliant display from peacocks! We visited on a very hot day in May. it wasn’t very busy due to not being peak season. Well worth a visit. Allow at least a couple of hours to explore the castle to the full, but more if busy.

The Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology, located in Bodrum Castle, is a popular tourist attraction. It houses a diverse collection of artifacts from ancient shipwrecks and an extensive display of glass items. The museum provides detailed explanations about the time periods and circumstances surrounding the sinking of these ships, as well as the recovery process for these sunken relics. With Turkey's rich ancient history and numerous coastal battles, the museum continually unveils new exhibits related to underwater exploration.
Such a fascinating place. The museum is all over the castle. Enter from the marina side.

Really amazing museum, it exceeded our expectations! There are a lot of uneven steps, so wear walking shoes and it might be difficult for children.
Kathryn D — Google review
A not very big museum housed by a few different halls placed inside the Bodrum castle's walls. The access fee is included in the castle ticket. You'll see mostly ceramic and glass objects, amphorae, a few spears and other weapons.
Paul C — Google review
So much history.. only thing is the tickets are expensive.
Bimal P — Google review
This is a good place to visit. It will take approx. 2 hrs. to get around the whole place. If you're into history and likes to take their time and read about each display, maybe alot 3hrs? Make sure to wear shoes that are good for hiking and not slippery. Some steps are a bit steep and the stones are a bit slippery. Bring some water too to rehydrate. 😊
Joy's S — Google review
While not huge, it has presented great underwater finds. Additionally you have access to the castle built originally by the knights.
George M — Google review
The price was kinda high(150tl per person) but you don't get much anyway. The first floor was dedicated to average scale & weighting exhibition (showing you a bunch of vase) and even smaller room dedicated to huge vases. On the second floor we found a nice collection jewelries but it too was rather small. And that't all. It took us around 30 min to see it all. It my be a nice place to drop by if you are in the area or to kill a spare hour but it's not worth a dedicated visit.

A beautiful medieval castle with a museum display from antiquity to the Middle Ages, great exhibits, an unavoidable place for all lovers of ancient history. Place with the most beautiful view in the whole of Bodrum, if you want to have great photos from Bodrum this is another reason to visit this castle

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus is an ancient archaeological site located in Bodrum, Turkey. The ruins date back to around 350 B.C. and are part of the ancient Greek city of Halicarnassus. The area has a distinctively Greek atmosphere with whitewashed houses adorned with bright blue accents. Despite being busy during peak tourist season, the port, marina, and waterfront promenade offer a relatively tranquil setting with various dining options.
It was constructed as a tomb for Mausolus, the Persian satrap of Caria, and his wife, Artemisia II. The structure symbolized both the wealth and power of Mausolus, as well as his legacy. It featured a large, rectangular base with a stepped pyramid structure, crowned by a massive chariot with statues of Mausolus and Artemisia. The structure's height and intricate details made it one of the tallest tombs of its time. The mausoleum was originally located on the acropolis of Halicarnassus, overlooking the harbor. The city was part of the Persian Empire during the reign of Mausolus. Despite its ruinous state today, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus remains a significant archaeological and historical site, offering insight into ancient Persian culture and architecture. Tucker price is 3euro PP

1 of the 7 wonders of the ancient world. It's definitely worth a visit and costs around 3 euros each for entry (April 2025) You are able to walk through the site at your own pace. The site is a 15-minute walk from the main bus station, but there are also buses and taxis available. Bring your own refreshments. Toilets were available when we visited.
Wayne T — Google review
Very interesting historical site, with information provided on signboards in the exhibition hall in various languages. A tiny museum kiosk has books about Türkiye and other items. Many ruins to photograph. Once you are finished at the Mausoleum, the ancient theatre is a short but intense walk up hill a short distance away. Follow the signboards and turn left at the top of the hill. The views are magnificent!

The mausoleum, built from 353 to 350 BC, ranked as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Place to go for all those history lovers. 3 euro entrance fee.

It’s sad to see one of the great wonders of the ancient world reduced to a sad, littered, and overgrown backyard. This location has so much potential to share history with visitors.

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was a grand tomb built for King Mausolus of Caria, a satrap (governor) of the ancient Persian Empire, around 350 BC. Located in present-day Bodrum, Turkey, it was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and a testament to the wealth and power of the ancient city of Halicarnassus. One needs a fair bit of imagination to appreciate the ruins here. Amazing history of a Wonder of the Ancient world but now foundations only. There's a really good video in the visitor centre and models but wouldn't spend more than 30 mins here. Free WiFi on entry.
Josh N — Google review
A pretty insignificant little site. It’s hard to imagine it was once the site of one of the Seven Wonders of the World. That was before, this is now. I think the winder was taken apart and used by crusader knights to build their castle. The movie was too soft and I could hardly hear it. Small basic mosaic and a few broken columns laying around. If you have any interest in archaeology then get to Ephesus. It is possibly the best site in Turkey, and Luke all sites in Turkey it’s overpriced, but in this caste it’s worth the trip and the ticket price

The Zeki Muren Arts Museum is a tribute to the renowned Turkish artist and musician, Zeki Müren. It is situated in his former residence, now transformed into a museum showcasing his personal belongings, costumes, musical works, and numerous awards. The museum also features paintings by famous artists and offers insight into Müren's significant role in Turkish music development. A visit to this museum provides an immersive experience in art and culture, making it one of the top attractions in Bodrum for art enthusiasts.
I don't know how to say it, but it was spectacular. The Turkish styled house and the Zeki Müren's music, the atmosphere, and everything about this museum are amazing. Paintings, clothes, cassette players... It is not difficult to understand why Zeki Müren is called "The Sun of Art." Seeing Zeki Müren's life, music, style, and art-filled house together was the best experience of Bodrum for me. (As a Turk)

We love this place. It was so much fun to fall into a little bit of culture from a Turkish perspective. Whether he was Turkey's Liberace or Turkey's Elton John, we absolutely adored finding all of the costumes and the music and even his car! What a treat! There's also a cafe here so if you get hungry or thirsty after spending time in the museum, you can grab a little bite to eat or some Turkish coffee. There's bathrooms too. We spent about 45 minutes in the museum

Historical landmark
Myndos Gate, located in Bodrum, is a significant historical site as it is the only remaining gate from the two gates that once protected the ancient city of Halikaranasos. The gate was part of a 7-km wall built for defense against external invasions. Visitors can explore the area and observe remnants of a trench where historians believe soldiers of Alexander the Great perished in 334 BC.
The gate is on the outskirts of Gumbet and is free to enter and look around. Not a great amount to see, but it does give a sense of ancient history. Best to Google the gate beforehand to give an idea of the siege that happened before this gate. Next to the hut, road side at the entrance is a Carob tree. The seeds were used hundreds of years ago to weigh other items as the seeds were all an identical weight and size. Also worth Googling!

We bumped into this place completely by accident. At first it doesn’t look like a monument at all because of the trash on the floor and the state of the ruins BUT once you pass by it, it looks pretty cool. At sunset it seems like the place to be if you climb to the top!
Ana V — Google review
A good walk starting from the road running from the marina along the city wall to the Myndos gate. Lots to see and great views. Such a pity it is treated with such little respect, litter and cigarette ends everywhere.

Interesting last remaining gate of the city’s ancient walls. Information plaques around the area explain the history. A sad reflection of the times is the number of homeless people using the area.

Truly enjoyed walking amongst the ancient ruins of the city, one of two main entrances to the ancient city of Halicarnassus, however, one can not get upset seeing all the rubbish left behind by people ie plastic bottles, cigarettes, packaging. Not to mention extremely close proximity of a resort and how the resort using the ancient site as a storage and even installed a large light on one of the tombs. (See pictures) One expects better care from the municipality to maintain the site and dismantle modern fixtures installed. Go see, enjoy and be saddened by the condition.

Seafood restaurant
Orfoz Restaurant Bodrum, located in the central Kumbahce neighborhood of Bodrum, offers a unique dining experience with its seafood-focused menu and epicurean twist. The restaurant's simple six-course tasting menu showcases the freshest produce from the sea, featuring dishes like fresh mussels and plump oysters served with delicate parmesan foam. The ingredients are sourced from nearby gardens and farms, allowing for occasional deviations from the menu to incorporate local flavors.
Best food I have eaten in a while. Best restaurant I will likely eat in Bodrum. The salad in one of the pictures is made 100% like how my mum or grandma makes it and they’re Ottoman Turkish Iraqi’s. The view is incredible, you sit and smell jasmine flowers. The atmosphere is very chilled and beautiful, you hear birds chirping. The service is excellent and staff are super friendly. We had vegetarian a la carte which was a safe option for my mother who is not very adventurous with sea food. The vegetables were soaked in the craziest dressing ever. The olive oil they use - omg. They have a clementine drink which leaves a floral aftermath taste. We asked about few dishes and it was all local produce and you can identify from the taste and quality. The portion size was perfect as it is a la carte, we left and felt full to a healthy level. The price for what we ate is average for a Michelin awarded restaurant. Your trip to Bodrum does not count if you do not go to this restaurant.
Lava F — Google review
Upscale restaurant with the nice view. Set menu saved us a lot of time with choosing what to eat, and it’s definitely worth trying. Mussels, oysters, Turkish version of paella, seafood soup, garden salad and more. We weren’t able to finish the full set, please come hungry. Baked eggplant was my favorite, together with veggie salad, made from seasonal vegetables from local farm. A bit overpriced, but it’s worth going
Nina V — Google review
The place’s view is very nice overlooking the sea, the food was okay but the portions were tiny and the price was really expensive.. there were some things that I didn’t like and couldn’t eat but their Parmesan mussels are so good to be honest!
Raghad — Google review
The food here is amazing!! Set menu where you get little tasters of loads of different type of food so the menu is limited in the sense you can't really pick what you eat, but you can get add ons like crab and lobster etc. Either way I loved it thought it was really good quality amazing flavours. Also lovely outdoor seating area with gorgeous views of the marina. Staff were super friendly as well and really good service.
Tanya M — Google review
Lovely restaurant in Bodrum with an amazing seafood tasting menu. The food was delicious, freshly sourced and prepared, the location and ambience was very relaxing and the staff were very friendly. There is also wine pairing with the menu. Overall an amazing food experience!
Subhalakshmi D — Google review
Let’s start with why I am writing this review.. I am a restaurant manager from London and my partner she is a chef in one of the hottest restaurants I Mayfair. After reading some of the let’s say disconcerting reviews I think they are very unjustified. Orfoz is a local restaurant serving up local produce ! You can’t beat it. Yes the food comes out fast, but who wants slow service ? We decided to take the wine pairing and it was perfect, well balanced Turkish wine perfectly matched with the fresh seafood. To be honest this restaurant is the only place we could fine that was doing something different and unique. Water topped up, wine and food explained, fresh plates, friendly staff, the list goes on… People who leave this restaurant a bad review do not understand the industry, they do not realise we’re they are, this is Bodrum not Paris or London. Amazing experience ! Definitely worth the money.
Thomas F — Google review
The inflation crises in Turkey has got out of hand. I’m a Brit who lived for seven years in London as a corporate M&A lawyer used to dining out and Istanbul for the last three but this restaurant is the most expensive and underwhelming I have eaten at in the last decade. The price for three people (one of them pregnant and not eating) came to 15,000 lira. That’s $500. The measures on the tasting wine selection are pathetic at most a ‘thimble’ and certainly not full glasses. The aim seems to be to get you to order even more overpriced drinks rather than anything approaching a wine pairing with food. For two people, it’s £100 for what was pretty run of the mill plonk. If you do go do yourself a favour and order a bottle. That way you might at least be a little tipsy by the time the astronomical bill arrives. The food, again, nothing at all special and the people posting positive reviews have never eaten in London, New York or Tokyo. The salad looked like something a nine year old would make. The fish soup, pleasant but distinctly under seasoned. The ‘paella’ came in a dish the size of a crème brûlée - for three people. The price point now is 1/2 Michelin star but everything about the place is a neighbourhood eatery in an average part of London - apart from the prices which, given the quality, would make the Dorchester blush. If you are coming on holiday to Bodrum in 2024 and want to drop this amount of money at this restaurant you either have no taste or too much money or both. If like me you live in Turkey then I’m sure in two months they will double the prices again and you’ll pay $1000 usd for a really average meal. Again, so many good restaurants in Bodrum to pick from this is just an old fashioned stitch up/tourist trap. The pregnant member of our party was particularly aghast that despite not having any wine, any food or anything beyond sparkling water at £13 a bottle, it still cost £110 for her ‘dinner’. Anyway, if you read this review and still go then I feel very sorry for you. There are tons of better restaurants in Bodrum which serve better food for a fraction of the price. I rarely post reviews but frankly this place overcame my usual sang froid. Terrible.
Owen P — Google review
I really wanted to love this restaurant but just couldn't :( describing the tasting menu as "mediocre" is generous. The add on sea urchin and crab was particularly bad texture and flavor. The best part of the meal was the sunset and a decent bottle of wine.

Upstairs overlooking the band and marina is a gorgeous setting for dinner. We were way too early as we came for sunset. Sunset isn’t visible on this side, so come later as it was very quiet with few tables and live music only starting at 10.30pm, plus it may have been off season (Sept 2024). Bring a jacket as it’s windy up there! Staff are kind and helpful.

a good place to listen to live music, but there is a problem. The menu doesn't indicate what's spicy. the waiters run after each other, but do not completely set the table, there are three of us, they brought two forks and three knives, they gave two of us napkins. We sat down at the table, the table was covered in crumbs.

The atmosphere was great with live music and a gorgeous view of the water, bodrum castle and as we ate at the restaurant upstairs we could see the stage etc as well. The food however was quite disappointing to me, I had the vegetable and salmon pasta which was super bland. Our table also tried the seafood pasta and a lot of starters which were all pretty okay but for the place and price I would have expected more. The most interesting thing we had was the Creme brûlée that was flavoured with turkish coffee. However, all in all I still think it is a really nice and lively place, maybe better to go for drinks than food!

Memedof is a well-established seaside restaurant in Bodrum, run by the husband and wife team Mehmet and Tulin Cuhadar. The restaurant offers a stunning view of the rugged coastline and distant islands, creating a warm and golden ambiance during sunset. While slightly on the pricey side, the menu features excellent mezze options such as fresh fennel salad with local olive oil and citrus accents, artichoke puree, deep-fried zucchini, and Mediterranean-style semolina.
The restaurant is located in the center of Bodrum, next to the marina. They serve good quality and fresh seafood, both cold and warm appetizers are tasty. The place is usually very crowded at dinner time and service may not keep up to high standards. I am coming back🧿

Unfriendly staff. They speak English poorly. When ordering fish, I asked twice about appetizers. The waiter said that they were free with the fish. We chose 3 appetizers. 2 of them were edible. In the end, they brought the bill, which included everything. In the end, the price of the appetizers was higher than the fish itself that we ordered. We asked for tea 3 times and they forgot about us. After that, I went to the manager. He shrugged his shoulders. He counted the money and pretended that he did not understand me. I do not recommend this place.

Definitely one of Bodrum’s most popular seafood restaurants. The starters were ok but Tuesday fish plates were so fresh and tasty. So better to avoid the starters if one can. Decor and atmosphere is very basic. Service is very good.

Absolutely avoid for tourists!!!! We visited as there were lots of locals eating at the restaurant. They told us to choose cold starters and fish inside however when the bill came these were severely overpriced! They up charged us on several dishes and put multiple servings of dishes on the receipt. They argued with us that they brought several skewers on one plate, justifying several portions on the bill that we didn’t order. We had to haggle to have these items removed. Feel totally scammed!

Good seafood and tasty dessert options. It also has a relaxed vibe. If you're new to ordering seafood in Bodrum, it can be quite startling however the waiters are helpful and just ask them to price up whatever you choose.

Bodrum seafood and meze restaurant with nice outdoor seating in a bustling area close to the marina. We liked the idea of ordering a few appetizers to share. Waiter brought us to the meze display where another waiter took the time to describe each dish on display. We decided on the roasted eggplant paste, artichokes, olives & walnut, greek salad, fried calamari and grilled octopus. I never had octopus so tender. Our service was excellent and the vibe was energetic without being loud. Good value for the area. Thanks again to our friendly server who was always around to service our needs and requests.

La Pasion Bodrum is a popular Spanish restaurant in the heart of Bodrum, known for its delicious Mediterranean dishes and charming garden patio. Nestled on a cobblestone street away from the hustle and bustle of Carsi, this restaurant offers an authentic dining experience with its diverse menu featuring tapas, paella, and other Spanish classics. The venue's romantic ambiance is enhanced by its traditional old Greek stone house setting, complete with a courtyard surrounded by fig trees and vibrant flowers.
My partner and I were searching for a restaurant, and we were thrilled to stumble upon this gem! The food was absolutely delicious, and the staff couldn’t have been friendlier. We tried several dishes for dinner, each one more impressive than the last, and finished the evening with a delectable Basque cheesecake that was the perfect end to a fantastic meal. The restaurant offers incredible value for money, with prices that are very reasonable considering the high quality of the food. We enjoyed it so much and would highly recommend it to anyone!

A truly wonderful dining experience at the heart of Bodrum We were strolling in dire need for a lunch place. We found Pasion by chance. It was so refreshing to get a taste of Spain in a sea of restaurant replicas, all serving similar foods. As we tend to spend a lot of time in Spain and know most dishes very well, this restaurant did not disappoint. The place appeals to your five senses (literally). The musical background, the choice of colors and the lovely details immediately take you to Spain. With a rich choice of wines and a menu, which despite its strong Spanish influence, still carries other Mediterranean notes. Some reviews mention the price being higher but the quality of the products makes it totally worth it. Also, it is not any more pricier than most of those places serving mediocre food but capitalizing on the sea views (especially occupying the beach fronts). If you are looking for a different and fresh culinary experience in Bodrum, go to Pasion, fully recommend it.

The food is a brilliant fusion of Spanish and Turkish flavors, with each dish crafted to perfection. The ambience is warm and inviting, making the experience even more enjoyable. If you’re in Bodrum, this place is a must-visit. Highly recommended!

This place was a great find! It is absolutely so cute. The ambience is amazing! They used to win travel awards every year. Hopefully, they can get back up there! The service was outstanding! Very attentive, and good with suggestions! The watermelon, mozzarella salad was different, interesting, and I loved it! We also had the sea scallops with black noodle, so Yum! And for dessert, we had the crème brûlée, so delicious! They have a good wine cellar as well and many choices! But I highly recommend getting the sangria! When in Bodrum, definitely stop here!

We know this Restaurant already a long time and spent many times there. Yesterday we had something to celebrate and were pleasantly surprised by some extra's from the chef. Super nice and the food, as usual, very well done. All in all a place to go to for sure. Recommended!
