Castle
Historical landmark
Perched on a hilltop, Castell de Santa Bàrbara is a 9th-century Muslim castle offering guided tours and housing a history museum. The journey to the castle takes you through the charming streets of El Barrio Santa Cruz, an old neighborhood with colorful Mediterranean tiles and potted flowers. The castle's dramatic position overlooks Alicante, where it has played a significant role in the city's history since its founding.
We had beautiful sunny Spring day to walk around the castle. We took the lift from the ground entrance as we didn't fancy the long climb, being seniors too we were able to ride the lift free which I believe is around €10. The views from the top of the castle were absolutely spectacular and we'll worth the trip. You can get a guided tour if you want but on this occasion we just wandered around on our own. There is a couple of small and one larger cafe and toilets available in the grounds also a gift shop. The ground is cobbled in places but I think it's still manageable for pushchairs. It does get very busy though as it was on the occasion we were there but I don't think it detracts from the experience. We really enjoyed looking round the castle and loved the viewpoints and would recommend visiting. 😀

Visiting the castle is definitely worth it! You can reach the top in about 30 minutes of leisurely walking. Entry is free. The views are stunning, offering a chance to see the city from different angles. There is also a souvenir shop.
Anna C — Google review
Very much worth a visit, you can kill a good number of hours walking around the old castles. Do bring good shoes though, some of tge ascend is pretty steep. The view over the city and sea is very beautiful. Admission is free if you walk up, or very cheap if you take the elevator, which I'd almost reccomend purely because it takes you there via a fairly cool undergraduate tunnel. The only thing I'll say is that it would be nice to have just a bit more historical context as to what I am looking at. Cool that the big stone wheels were part of an old bakery, but what were they used for?
Jan S — Google review
Truly beautiful place to visit! There is a lot of walking so be prepared, but plenty of places to rest and there is a lift you can take to the top if you don't want to walk up and down. It's well worth spending time walking around and exploring. The main wall when you come out of the lift is really busy for photos, but there are other sections much quieter off the main path. I went in January so it was warm and sunny but not too hot, if you go in middle of summer, I would imagine the heat would be very unforgiving, take plenty of water and perhaps even an umbrella, but overall a must see site

Being one of the most visually dominant features of the Alicante skyline one cannot miss a trip up to the top of the Castillo de Santa Bárbara in Alicante. The castle is located on Mount Benacantil and at its summit reaches a total height of 166m above sea level. The history of construction on the site dates back to the 9th century when a fort was constructed on the mountain by the Moors during Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula. The fort was recaptured in 1250 by Christian forces under King Alfonso X. Later during the renaissance in the 16th century, major defensive features were added including reinforced walls and improved watchtowers. At this time the site was one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain, with the wide angle of visibility an asset to defence. I would recommend going up to the summit using the elevator, there was a relatively long queue but using the elevator saved the hike up and the line was generally orderly. At the top, visitors will have the chance to experience great 360 degree views of the city and to explore the three main different levels of the fort. For visitors with a little more time and a higher level of physical fitness, the castle can be accessed using Parque de la Ereta trail, which winds up and around the mountain with of course more great views.
Rohan H — Google review
Its a historic place with great views. I walked up to the hill, while it’s not the easiest stroll, you do have to climb some steep stairs, the views along the way are very pretty. Of course the castle itself has the best views. You can skip the walk if it’s your thing. It’s a little confusing inside, there’s not a route of where to go for the nice spots and there’s a bit back and forth. However, you can see the mountains and the sea and get some amazing photos on a clear day.
Jiajia W — Google review
I wouldn't want to take a buggy here as it's cobbled, uneven ground and steep in places. I would have liked more info such as a guided tour, but didn't see this available. The lift saves the hour walk up and costs only 2 euros 70. Bargain. The fort is free to visit and has cafes and toilets in easy access. Really enjoyed the walk and the views were amazing all around. Would recommend a visit.
Wendy P — Google review
1 star less cos the staff on the 1st level of the lift said the restroom/toilet is at the top, then upon reached up there the other guy said its down at the entrance. So which is which??? You need to empty your bladders and bowels before coming up else good luck looking for a toilet! Yes while...spectacular views around Alicante right at the top. Must visit while in Alicante.

MACA Contemporary Art Museum of Alicante, also known as the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Alicante, is a prominent municipal museum located in the Asegurada building, which is the oldest civil building in Alicante. The museum boasts a diverse collection of 20th-century and contemporary art, featuring around 800 art pieces.
Loved that museum. Very interesting, thought provoking exhibitions and clear layout. The entrance is free.

Do not miss this beautiful museum when in Alicante! Besides their permanent collection showcasing modern and contemporary art from Spain and all around the globe, they have temporary exhibitions as well. Entrance is free of charge, one more reason to go! Look for QR codes for English translation (unfortunetely not everywhere).

MACA – A Peaceful Cultural Gem in Alicante Well! What a lovely surprise. MACA is a calm and beautifully curated space with a great selection of contemporary artworks. Whether you’re into art or just curious, it’s an enjoyable stop. Best of all? It’s free to visit, making it a perfect cultural break while exploring the city. The atmosphere is peaceful, the building itself is elegant, and the collection is surprisingly engaging. If you’re in Alicante, definitely pass by—art lover or not. It’s worth your time.

Museum of Modern Art. There are also works by Picasso, when I visited the gallery, works by Picasso were restored, conservation. Never mind, I love Alicante, I'll come in March and see the complete exhibition. Admission to the gallery is free.

Nice free museum to broaden your horizons. Öyvind Fahlström - my favourite opening 🌺 Some big pictures and stone’s bed really impressed
Natalie O — Google review
The MACA did a great job featuring both female and male artists and sculptures. The bottom floor featured the works of Esther Ferrer and the top floor of the Alicante Museum of Modern Art featured the “non sculptures” of Eusebio Sempere. Both artists donated their works and art collections. There are also other contemporary artists throughout the floors. I appreciated that Sempere believed in democratizing art and felt it was a social responsibility of an artist, after the Spanish Civil War, to create an outlet for a people who survived a dictator. The photos and art have a general theme of the repressed trying to find a voice and flight. They are hopeful and powerful pieces and at times leaving you to feel both sadness and buoyancy…. but ultimately grateful for their voices adding to the collective of universal experiences.

This museum has many levels. Lifts to all. Great to visit as it is free. Space changes and exhibit areas. New exhibition this year2024. Pictures are added today, 13th Dec2024 It has plenty of open space and interesting work. The work is contemporary, you will need an open mind. Toilets are clean. Museum light and comfortable. Place to store bag, token given from reception. There is a very special picture not to be missed whe my nyiu go th the toilets. It is enormous and incredibly mind bending. It was my favourite piece as it comprisses of the world and it's overwhelming abilities to consume.

History Museums
The Archaeological Museum of Alicante, housed in the old San Juan de Dios Hospital, is a cultural gem showcasing over 80,000 artifacts that vividly depict the diverse civilizations that have influenced the region. The museum offers a blend of permanent and temporary exhibitions focusing on field, urban, and underwater archaeology. What sets this museum apart is its modern approach to presenting archaeological findings using cutting-edge technology. It's not just about traditional showcases; there are interactive activities and videos explaining archaeological methods.
If you visit Alicante and you are a museum goer, this place is a must-go. The exhibition is presented in a great way. All information is printed in both Spanish and English. Although it’s only one floor, it’s actually quite large and lots of things to see. And staff here are very nice and friendly, and they speak English.
J. W — Google review
This is great archaeological museum. Very nicely presented expositions, some very cool arrangements which are very interesting and educational. I really recommend this museum! The only down point is that there is not comments in English. I believe that many tourists from other countries come to visit this museum, and English is widely spoken, so it would be nice to have all the information in English as well.
Marta M — Google review
If you like archeology and ancient pottery you will be thrilled. This is a really well done museum in it's specialist area making good use of artefacts and modern information techniques. Some displays in multiple languages. How wonderful the temporary exhibitions are so good and changing fairly often. The topics described by other reviewers sound splendid. The building itself is spacious , airy and rather grand for a museum! I'm not sure a separate building is really needed for tickets. There was an on-site cafe too with a good outdoors part. It was good they employed team members with special needs but the young man was a bit hard work. However, other staff soon supported and the items of food were very good especially the freshly cooked potatas bravos. Lovely to see nativity hanging on in the grounds and the stars for the Kings All in all if you like ancient history, this is worth going to. Presently, the entry price is 5 euros which seemed reasonable.
Pablito M — Google review
It's a great place to familiarize yourself with the history of Alicante. It is conveniently located in the center of the city and offers lots of artifacts, pictures, and historical facts. However, I have noticed that the staff was not very helpful. After we purchased our tickets ( the price was very reasonable 12 euros for two of us), they offered us to put our belongings into a locker. We tried to close the locker a few times, but it didn't work. We asked the cashier why it didn't work, and only after that she gave us a token, which we inserted into the slot to close the locker. Apart from that, our experience was awesome ! I highly recommend this to all visitors of Alicante.

Ah, the MARQ Archaeological Museum of Alicante—a place where history comes alive… but only if you speak Spanish. Otherwise, you’re left staring at mysterious artifacts with no clue whether they’re ancient treasures or just leftovers from someone’s pottery class. From the moment you step inside, it’s clear that MARQ follows a strict “No English Allowed” policy. Every single sign, every carefully crafted description, every grainy documentary video is exclusively in Spanish. Even the emergency exit signs get more linguistic diversity than the exhibits. The collection itself is—how to put this politely?—minimalist. We have four broken pots, each accompanied by a detailed, poetic description about their historical importance… which, again, only Spanish speakers can appreciate. The rest of us just see cracked bowls and wonder if we accidentally walked into a kitchen renovation exhibit. Then there are the five photo panels with protective glass, presumably there to safeguard these priceless JPEGs from the harsh glare of confused tourists. These images depict fascinating scenes from the past, but without an explanation, it’s basically a Neolithic Instagram feed—all vibes, no context. And let’s talk about the videos! Museums around the world at least throw in subtitles or an English voiceover. But not MARQ! Here, prehistoric figures appear on screen and talk passionately about their way of life, but unless you’re fluent in ancient Iberian (or modern Spanish), you’re out of luck. At this point, one starts to wonder: Is this a historical site or a social experiment? Did MARQ deliberately set out to create the only museum in Europe where English is an extinct language? A true archaeological marvel, indeed. So, what’s the final verdict? If you’re looking for a deep dive into Spanish-only archaeology with minimal artifacts and a maximum sense of linguistic isolation, MARQ is the place for you. If you actually want to learn something and don’t speak Spanish, bring a Spanish-speaking friend—or just make up your own history as you go along.
Javi Q — Google review
This is a bit of a treck away from the touristy areas, and I would recommend the walk along the seaside to get there rather than that along the busy road to the north of the Santa Barbara mountain. The exhibitions are well presented chronologically, and the ones about the technique of archaeological excavations and science of analysis of artefacts is really good. The older permanent halls do not have signs in English, but there is an audio guide that you access by scanning qr-codes in each room that narrate the epochs well. The new exhibitions of recent excavations in Roman time settlements in the area are impressive, and well presented. There is a small hall of temporary exhibitions at the back, with architecture of an old church building, and the ambience combined with soft classical music was so relaxing that I just stood there breathing for quite some time. In all it was worth the detour and the €5 entrance

It is a spacious museum with large rooms for every period of time and the way Alicante looked back in the day. A lot of exhibits are there and even screenings showing how the man kind of Alicante evolved.

Playa del Postiguet is a stunning urban beach located at the base of Mount Benacantil and near the iconic Santa Barbara Castle in Alicante. This 900-meter-long beach boasts fine golden sand, crystal-clear waters, and a bi-level promenade lined with palm trees and cafes. It's a perfect spot for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Beautiful beach, clean, with free water to wash feet's from sand. I saw many of locals doing workout at street workout bars. Near beach, are many of pubs and cafeterias to sit and order some drinks.

Nice beach right by the city. Lovely views. When playing in the sand there was quite a lot of cigarette ends and shards of plastic and some glass. We were there in February so didn't go in the sea. The public toilets are not open in the off season, only June to October. Still a nice promenade and great location.
Graham K — Google review
It is one of the most beautiful beaches ever. A lot of palm trees, people, shops, toilets, taps to wash your feet (body), a nice and clean sand, no rocks at all and many more for children and adults !!!

Playa del Postiguet is one of Alicante’s most iconic beaches, located right in the heart of the city. With its golden sand, clear waters, and stunning views of Santa Bárbara Castle, it’s a perfect spot for both relaxation and leisure. The beach is well-maintained, offering amenities like sunbeds, showers, and beachside cafés. Its central location makes it easily accessible, and the lively promenade adds to the vibrant atmosphere. Whether you’re looking to swim, sunbathe, or enjoy a seaside stroll, Playa del Postiguet is a must-visit in Alicante.

A clean and easily accessible city beach with fine sand and clear water. While it can get busy, there's ample space for everyone. Just be mindful of your belongings, though lockers are available on-site. We recommend heading to Area 6, our favorite spot, as Areas 1-4 tend to be more crowded. For reference, two sunbeds and an umbrella cost €27, and it's cash only.
Lordele T — Google review
Clean and beautiful little beach with lots of play equipment dotted around the beach including swings etc. We had a great time there. Lots of foot showers available for cleaning the sand.

My favourite beach with the castle behind. Clean and large golden sand beach, plenty of shops nearby, and near a tram station to Benidorm for example.
Dwfmedia U — Google review
Nice beach if you can avoid the fried egg jellyfish (it stung me!) and the brown water near the shore - algae? Idk. We went during the peak season so lots of people and especially old ladies with questionable wardrobe choices. But the water was warm, in some parts perfectly clear and lovely. There are better beaches.

Nou Manolín, a classic among the great restaurants in Alicante since 1971, is renowned for its legendary bar where you can savor sophisticated versions of the best seafood tapas. The restaurant's cuisine combines tradition and modernity, focusing on the finest local produce such as Valencia's fresh vegetables and bay seafood. The bar and kitchen are seamlessly integrated, offering a unique dining experience.
Just blown away by my visit here. Arrived just as they were opening for lunch and was lucky to get a space at the counter. Food, service and atmosphere were all faultless, couldn't have asked for better. Food wise I loved the Gilda so much I ordered a second one, the topped breads were delicious as was the Jamón. Excellent red wine too. Definitely worth visiting here as a treat.

Great experience! We only had seafood and it was splendid—fresh, flavorful, and perfectly prepared. Nice selection of wines too, which paired beautifully with the dishes.
Arthur D — Google review
without exaggeration this place has the best atmosphere! the place consists of 2 parts: a bar on the first floor and a restaurant on the second floor. the restaurant is ordinary, just delicious. all my positive comments about the bar - great fresh products, great atmosphere and a good selection of suitable wines (not outstanding wines)
SLAVA — Google review
The most amazing restaurant- one of the best we have ever eaten in, not just the food but experience. Queue just before 8pm to get a seat at the bar and see the seafood on display. Fast and furious service but you can relax and take you time if you wish, the place is buzzy with atmosphere and the food is super fresh and perfect to prepared and presented. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Enjoy !

Amazing restaurant in Alicante, probably the best in the area, the rice was just magnificent, perfect, full of freshness, top quality and flavours. Great wine list, impossible to decide. A big bar downstairs to start warming up, before heading up to the big restaurant.

Effortlessly classy and cool, you can see why Nou Manolín has attracted lots of Spanish celebs. Our meal was outstanding, the fried prawns in the shells with broken eggs and rice with pigs trotters were both unusual and delicious. I wouldn't call the cousine experimental, just very well executed, much like the service and decor. A great place to take someone you love.
Geoffrey B — Google review
Authentic atmosphere, authentic spanish flavor, super friendly and fast service. Nothing can go wrong. One of the best croquetas (jamon and fish) I have tasted in my 3 years in Spain, mouthwatering dessert, the mushroom dish is top and do eat the remaining of the sauce with bread, great selection of wines. Will be definitely coming back.
Ligeia Z — Google review
Seriously amazing food with great quality ingredients. The salad was super fresh as well as the oysters I had. My partner's sirloin was cooked really well. It would be 5/5 stars if it weren't for the very slow serving of our tapas appetizer (took 1 hour+ for all 6 dishes to come out separately). We were absolutely starving by the time the mains came out after the last appetizer was finished. The staff never informed us that the dishes were late so we waited and waited and waited and waited. There was only 1 quick but insincere apology when the last appetizer was served (the last dish that came out an hour+ after we ordered was 3 croquettes). The service was disappointing for a high end restaurant but the food was brilliant.

The restaurant is known for its excellent food at reasonable prices and holds a Michelin Plate. Started as a catering project in 1979, it focuses on high-quality raw ingredients and innovative preparations that enhance traditional flavors.
Beautiful bar with superb quality wines and delicious food. Was made to feel very welcome here as a solo diner and had a great time. Everything I ate was delicious, I especially enjoyed their Gilda made with artichoke. I highly recommend this place when visiting Alicante.
Paul B — Google review
We where a large group (+15) and got the whole top floor for our selves. We ordered the tapas tasting menu with the wine package @€99 pr person. Tomatoes (really amazing), cheese, ham, steak, baby squid, crackers, bread pudding where all on the menu along with other items. All in all a very well put together menu. The service from the staff was excellent.
Jonny H — Google review
We got a set menu and it was a large amount of food. The artichoke and tomato burrata salad were my favourites. Everything else felt like fillers you could get from anywhere else. I would come back but order separate dishes. For downtown Alicante and good quality, it’s an ok price. Four stars for atmosphere because it was uncomfortably warm and stuffy in the room we were sat in
J J — Google review
We were recommended to this restaurant by friends in the UK, but both a tour guide and the hotel also recommended it. Good menu and wonderful food, staff friendly and helpful. Remember that in Alicante people eat late - so if you eat early I would recommend you book the bar area - the restaurant itself fills up from 9pm with people arriving well after 10pm and it is definitely frequented by locals as well as tourists. Good selection of gins at the bar (if that your thing, it is mine). Another treat we’re “home cooked” deserts - the cheesecake was something else (see pic).
Scafify — Google review
Overprised and overrated. Carpaccio was quite tasteless, the crystal bread was too expensive for its quality, and let’s not even talk about arroz con pollo (24€ per person). The service was okay - there were lots of efficient staff.
Anina K — Google review
even the most standard-sounding dish tastes super-fine and extra classy. Never had croquets so soft and amazing. The tuna tartar comes with a beautifully surprising list of sides. The services is first-class and the ambiente very calm and luxurious. My new favorite place in Alicante. The premium pricing is absolutely adequate.
Christian F — Google review
Our hotel recommended this restaurant and, oh my, it was so good. We arrived late and were looking for some quality, well cooked tapas. That’s what we got. The ‘glass bread’ with tomato and extra virgin olive oil was absolutely delicious, as were the Iberico ham croquettes, the ham plate and patatas bravas (although a lot of spicy sauce and aioli). We try to visit different restaurants each day when exploring new places, but I suspect we might return to this one on our trip. Yum.

One of the best lunches I’ve ever had! The food was absolutely delicious, and the wine paired perfectly with every dish. We didn’t have a reservation, but they welcomed us warmly and found us a table right away, which we truly appreciated. I highly recommend this place—it’s a beautiful experience from start to finish. The restaurant has incredible taste and refinement, both in its menu and atmosphere. A true gem in Alicante!

Restaurant La Ereta offers a unique dining experience with its creative Mediterranean cuisine and breathtaking city views. !!!This is a review regarding the New Years Eve party at La Ereta and not their usual dining experience!!! We chose La Ereta for our New Year's Eve dinner, hoping for a memorable end to the year. The restaurant certainly boasts a great reputation, and while the dishes we were served tasted wonderful, incorporating great ingredients, they didn't quite meet the level of creativity and flair we expected from such a renowned establishment. Service during the evening was a bit of a letdown. It seemed disorganized at times, and the staff often appeared unsure about the details of the dishes they were serving. We had to wait for them to check back with the kitchen multiple times, which disrupted the flow of our dining experience. Moreover, witnessing the head waiter reprimanding the staff multiple times within view and earshot of the diners was quite uncomfortable and seemed unprofessional. The ambiance after dinner didn't quite lend itself to the festive, celebratory mood typically associated with New Year's Eve. There wasn't much in the way of music or space conducive to dancing and socializing, though to be fair, we weren't expecting a lively party scene. Overall, while La Ereta offers tasty cuisine, the overall experience fell short of what one might hope for on such a special night. Based on this experience, I wouldn't recommend the restaurant for celebrating major events like New Year's Eve, though it might be suitable for a regular dining outing.

Went yesterday for lunch and had an amazing experience. We had the Alicante tasting menu with a bottle of wine chosen by the chef. Every course was delicious with amazing flavours. Each course was explained to us expertly by our waitress and presented so beautifully. I must commend our waitress who spoke perfect English and had a superb knowledge of the food. I think her name was Monica sorry I’m terrible with names but she is originally from Mexico. A real dining experience if you want to sample the flavours of Alicante. The highlight was the prawn hot pot, the cuttlefish rice and the nougat desert. One small note the bread could have been fresher and maybe warmed but a minor point. A fabulous gastronomic experience.

It was a little cold as we were in the outside sheltered area, but with a jacket it was fine. The attention, kindness and professionalism of our waiter Lucas made us feel welcome and very well cared for at all times. We chose the Monastrel menu, each dish was spectacular, everything was delicious! A lot of their vegetables are grown on their own local farm and it really showed in the unique tastes. We also decided to celebrate in style with their amazing wine pairings. The sommelier, very knowledgeable and likeable (I don't remember her name but she had short hair). Thank you all so much for an unforgettable meal and experience.

Beautiful setting with people serving their passion! What a gorgeous place, located right on the marina, but tucked away just enough to provide an intimate atmosphere. We were blown away by the service and hospitality, as well as the 7 course menu perfectly tailored for Vegans! The wine list included several bio-dynamic and ‘ancestral’ wines which was fantastic. All in all, you can really taste the craft, love and passion in all the dishes and as plant-based eaters we loved it to the fullest.

After 2 more visits we have changed our rating down to 3. It keeps disappointing unfortunately. Conclusion first: A bit disappointed ? yes Price: The cheapest Michelin restaurant we have been to so far this is number 12. Only 66 euro for a testing menu that left us very very full. Far from the best Michelin but also for sure not the worst and the best restaurant in Alicante and on top of that amazing location. The appetizers were disappointing none of them stood out. The mains - one was very good others okay. Desserts - one was very good.

Tapas bar
Spanish restaurant
Bar El Cantó is a hidden gem in the streets of Alicante, drawing crowds with its exceptional tapas and authentic Spanish cuisine. The menu is dedicated to traditional Spanish delicacies, featuring fresh ingredients and flavorful options that keep customers coming back for more. This small bar, established in the 1980s, has gained legendary popularity, with locals queuing outside before it opens.
The first place I visited in Alicante and I was so happy with my choice. Lovely bar with friendly staff and a great atmosphere. I loved sitting at the bar watching all the action. Rioja was delicious, food wise I loved the Jamón and the Ensaladilla Rusa, the fresh cheese 'a la plancha' was also great, I wasn't a fan of the croquetas but that's probably the only negative. Will definitely be visiting again before I leave this beautiful city

Probably the best bar I've ever been to in this town, as a local living abroad I felt pride in my town having these around The food there is fresh and top niche, the attention and presentation outstanding the bar decoration itself it's a journey throughout history If you're looking for a place to dine, have a quick drink or snack, look no further you can't go wrong there. Shootout to our amazing server Javier, we left impressed by their knowledge and recommendations Tip: - Get there early or make a reservation, this place is as small as amazing so it tends to fill very quickly

First time going here. You cannot book. Amazing tapas and a menu in both Spanish and English. See pictures!

The restaurant is very popular, lots of locals having lunch there. The food portion is not big, but everything tastes good. Traditional tapas restaurant.

It was pure coincidence to find this spot in town. Definitely worthy the visit for proper Spanish tapas and montaditos. We had tomato/ventresca, artichokes a la plancha and an assortment of montaditos with different sorts of meats and sausages. I recommend the blood sausage and the one in the name of the place. Last but not least you also get to try very classic desserts like the natillas in the last picture. The team is amazing, fast and friendly.

The service is very nice. Lunch was delicious. Callos con garbanzos (Tripe stew with chickpeas) y Mollejas con patatitas (Sweebread with potatoes)

Great Venue. Lovely food, friendly and efficient staff. Lovely Albariño house white wine. Understandably busy at peak times. Highly recommend 👌

I went for the reviews. Quite disappointing food, to pay 15 euros for this oily bathed squids, seems too much. Super small portion . They don’t serve cappuccino and the staff does not speak minimum English. When they notice you are a tourist, they are very rude. Do not recommend.
