Auto Race Tracks
Highlands Motorsport Park is located near Cromwell, offering a range of driving experiences and attractions. The center features a motorsport museum, a go-kart track with high-speed karts, dirt buggies for off-road action, and an international standard race track where visitors can enjoy thrilling rides in luxury cars like Porsche GT3 and Lamborghini. Additionally, the park offers interactive activities for kids in the museum and provides taxi rides for an adrenaline-pumping experience.
Honestly, I didn't know much about this place prior to our visit. What an awesome venue. The museum was good, the track looks great. But it was the loo with the view that left an impression on my wife.
Jeff G — Google review
This was a birthday gift to me from my wife. Did the Ferrari hot lap and the go carts. The driver was really awesome and was talkative and super pro shooting that Ferrari around the track with precision and speed. (Definitely hold on tight) the go carts was very fun and a great track with good bends and awesome fun. The museum is small but has some great collections and it was discounted due to me having the Ferrari and go carts combo. Mind blowing experience going super fast around the track in the Ferrari and would highly recommend this to any car enthusiast or someone who wants a good shot of adrenaline.
Matthew B — Google review
Amazing place, I will be back for certain. So many things all in one place.the museum has some amazing one of a kind cars in it, and some that take you for a walk down memory lane. It is well worth a look around. Cafe food and service were awesome. Now time to start planning my trip here for Toyota Fest 2025!
Phil S — Google review
Awesome scenery. Great atmosphere. Loo with a view is a Must! Pity the go-carts are strict on finish times even with paying customers lined up.
A N — Google review
Great day looking at all the old school race cars, track and go carts track. Heaps of fun
Dan M — Google review
Great experience! Attended on a weekday in the winter season so got offered cheaper rates. Took the radical for a drive with Steve the instructor. Absolutely legend, push me just outside my comfort zone but still felt safe and had a blast! Go Karts were very fun, recorded time so could compare again other drivers on track. The museum was incredible, so many 1 off race cars and limited number super cars. Oh, and the food was great! Honestly such a great experience!
Harley C — Google review
Kids loved the carting and seeing the super cars. They have a cool loo with a difference as well.
Lilan P — Google review
We pop in to the museum every time we come to Cromwell, this time I finally bit and took the U-drive Radical for a spin. My biggest regret is not doing this any sooner, the most exhilarating thing I've done in my life. I'll definitely be back for another spin next time. Staff in the museum and on the track were great, and the car was fantastic. I can't stop the grin every time I think about it!

Lake
Located a few hours north of Queenstown, Lake Dunstan is an artificial lake that offers breathtaking scenic landscapes with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The narrow lake is lined with trees and provides a picture-perfect setting for activities like biking, walking, kayaking, and fishing. It's also a great spot for water activities, picnics, and freedom camping. A new trail connecting the towns of Clyde and Cromwell has been gaining attention in the media as a fun biking or walking route.
One of the most spectacular places I have been - bike ride along the lake is a bucket list must do activity!

Bike trail is great get an ebike unless you are fit. In the height of summer the lake is all fizz boats and petro heads on Jetskis. It is a man made lake nothing natural.

Still to cold to swim but seeing a few jet skis and boats out and about. Quite a few fishers trying their luck

Was an awesome experience to see the lake and town from the air. Highly recommended it.

Step back in time and immerse yourself in the captivating history of gold mining at the Goldfields Mining Centre. Located in Central Otago, this center offers guided tours that provide insight into the tools, techniques, and socio-economic impact of 19th-century gold mining. Explore old miners' huts, shafts, and tunnels to gain a glimpse into life during the gold rush era.
Had heaps of fun here with my sister! Went on a super cold day and there was water droplets frozen on all the trees which made the experience so much more magical. We did the walk and were on time for our tour but the other members of our group weren't on time. Got to say waiting 20+ minutes wasn't very fun even though our guides speech was extremely interesting. The panning was heaps of fun as well, I may not have struck gold but there was heaps of super pretty rocks flecked with what I assume to be pyrite! Awesome day.
Globbar G — Google review
Random find. We stopped off while traveling somewhere else. Did the tour and gold panning. It was $35pp. Definitely worth it. It was something nice to do. The guide was great. Lots of things to look at. There is a self guided walk you can do . It's quite hilly and lots of gravel though, but loads to see. Recommend doing it clockwise, not anticlockwise like we did!!
Lauren W — Google review
It is located next to a beautiful river just before you enter Queenstown. You cross over a bridge. You can eat and relax, and you can also join a gold panning tour.
Mustafa — Google review
Reasonable ticket pricing and they don't charge you extra for a tour. It was very cool to see the old water blaster in action. Clean and well maintained toilets too. Just some feedback, the tour guide should stick around for a while longer after explaining how to pan gold as lots of people in the group weren't sure if they were doing it correctly and the guide was already nowhere to be seen.
Leedon R — Google review
This is a really interesting place. We learnt a lot from Chris about the history of not only the area, but New Zealand as a whole. Would highly recommend for anyone interested in finding their fortune ☺️
Adam — Google review
An interesting heritage site, but could be so much better with restoration of the fading information boards and relics. The admission price is the same for a self-guided or guided tour and is high relative to other heritage sites. Not recommended.
Kevin G — Google review
Such an amazing place, staff were so friendly and. Informative. Lady in the shop was kind and helpful. Gold panning was so much fun! Great place to look around and appreciate the history. Highly recommend
Pink L — Google review
Pretty dissatisfied for the $35 entry fee Spent just under a hour walking around, then spent over half a hour listening to a guy speak before being shown how to pan for gold, this left me only 20minutes before I had to go. Totalling just over 2 full hours at the place. He said no one had found gold in weeks which was real disheartening. The lady at the counter seems quite rude. It wouldn't be worth going again nor would I recommend to anyone It's definitely a tourist trap with that entry price

The Heritage Precinct museum in New Zealand showcases restored buildings from the Gold Rush era of the 1860s, which now house shops and cafes. It offers a chance to reflect on early European history while exploring horse stables and enjoying picnics near Lake Dunstan's seating areas. There are vintage equipment displays, bakeries, and life-sized mannequins that add to the experience. The spot is also ideal for food and drinks with a stunning view of the lake.
Really neat place that pays respect to the heritage of Cromwell, now all underwater. They've recreated the old town higher up the bank with cool installations and cute little shops. Definitely worth a stop if you're not in a hurry.
Cory C — Google review
Loved it. The aliveness made it with great local businesses. Great coffee and very much enjoyed meeting and talking with Darryl Rae the stonecarver. So generous with his time
Pip S — Google review
A charming step back in time! The Cromwell Heritage Precinct beautifully preserves historic gold rush-era buildings, now home to artisan shops, cozy cafés, and galleries. Stunning lake views, local markets, and a relaxed atmosphere make it a must-visit in Central Otago.
Prashanth S — Google review
Step back in time with a visit to Old Cromwell town – When the Clyde dam was completed in 1990, Cromwell’s main street disappeared under Lake Dunstan. Following that some of the historic buildings dating back to the gold rush of the 1860’s were saved or lovingly rebuilt on higher ground, creating the Cromwell Heritage Precinct. Now filled with cafes, a Gallery, Museum and shops all on the shore of beautiful Lake Dunstan and the cycle track.
W E — Google review
Very beautiful area of Cromwell, with all the old shop fronts from times gone by. Nice little cafe too. Small Sunday market is a must!
Lesley T — Google review
This historical town is really just a single, very small street. I would actually recommend visiting Arrowtown instead. It’s also a charming historical town, but there’s much more to see and do. The buildings have a lot of character, and you’ll find plenty of places to eat and explore. It’s a much more engaging experience overall!
Edward C — Google review

Bannockburn Sluicings Historic Reserve, located near Cromwell, offers a glimpse into the area's gold mining past. The landscape bears the marks of historic gold mining activities and provides elevated views of Central Otago's vineyards and rocky hills. Visitors can explore ruined buildings along a loop track or opt for longer walks. The reserve showcases remnants of the once-thriving gold mining operations, offering insights into the region's history and the tenacity of its miners.
Love this unique NZ landscape. The hard work to shift all the ground was epic and has left an American desert type environment. However plant life is beginning to reclaim some ground and the smell of thyme was thick. Interesting info boards explain what went on here. Just very disappointing the dog owners aren't picking up their dog poo. Don't know how they can just leave it on the well used tracks.
D&C L — Google review
Found this place on AllTrails. Wasn’t listed in any guidebooks I read but should be. This place is amazing! Great views. Feels very much like a slice of the American Southwest with the badlands and cliffs. Juxtaposed with the wineries surrounding it and it’s truly a special location. The trail is a loop. The most interesting part of the loop is to the left, so I’d walk in a clockwise route.
Andrew B — Google review
Beautiful and arid landscape. The view of the mesas and plateaus offers a stark contrast against the snowy peaks in the background. Perfect place for an easy hike or bike ride.
Atticus P — Google review
Good if you love trekking or you love mountain biking.
Jancy L — Google review
Great views of Cromwell basin and surrounds. A good brisk 1 hour walk to complete the loop
Dion K — Google review
The walk around the Bannockburn Sluicings is pretty darn good. The loop track is around 3.5 to 4 km and takes a good hour or more if you explore a bit and stop for a few snaps. It's amazing to think that this landscape was modified do much by mining efforts around 150 years ago. It looks like something in a desert from the movies. Reading the information panels is worthwhile if you like history, particularly gold mining history. The Stewart town ruins are pretty cool and make you wonder what life would be like up here all those years ago. Be careful to follow the trail as it's easy enough to wander off onto other tracks. Just follow the markers and check for them regularly. The walk is quite hilly so a reasonable degree of fitness is required as us being reasonably sure footed. Nothing is too difficult though. Take water on a hot day. The views are panoramic and truly stunning as you get to the top. It feels like you can see 100 miles as you look out over the vineyards, across Cromwell and all the way down Lake Dunstan to the mountains. Beautiful.
Paul B — Google review
This site is amazing. The views are great from the top. History of the area is mind blowing the signs give you a brief look into what it was like. Goldming in such a baron place would have been so hard, all for GOLD. Sad that they didn't have to return the land to the way it was. The smell of thyme was lovely.
Pauline T — Google review
Fantastic hiking trails, amazing views, interesting terrain. Wild thyme everywhere and all were in bloom with the purple flowers. Parking was plenty.

Excellent food and service! Staff was very nice and checking up on you. The food was fresh and high quality. Especially the meat, perfectly cooked and so tender. Highly recommended if you are in the area

Beautiful looking location. There is a sign asking us to wait to be seated but we were then told to sit anywhere. After finding a table ourselves we waited for around 15 minutes and left after not being acknowledged, given menus, water, or anything. The food coming out of the kitchen looked and smelt good but we didn't stick around. They were busy, but its no excuse for not at least stopping by the table and saying sorry I'll be with you soon.

Services are good, staff friendly and willing to talk. Food was good. You need to careful about the birds 🐦 stealing your food. And also long waiting time required during lunch time.

Impeccable food, service and atmosphere. Genuinely welcoming and good humoured staff, super knowledgeable about the extensive wine list and food. Food was exceptional quality and the wine selection by the glass was epic. The space is tastefully modernised, while keeping with the heritage past. Epic experience, thank you!

We booked for lunch on Saturday and were really impressed by the service, location, decor and especially the wonderful, innovative food. Great wine list and quite good value too ( given the quality provided ). If only we didn't live in Sydney !!! Great place for a special get together or a more casual lunch. Spectacular views and impressive attention to every detail.

Wooing Tree Vineyard is an absolute gem in Cromwell. Their Pinot Noir is outstanding — both the flagship and the Beetlejuice label deliver great character and elegance. I also loved the Blondie rosé, which is fresh and unique, along with a well-balanced Chardonnay and crisp sparkling wines. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and made the tasting experience relaxed and enjoyable. The setting is beautiful, with outdoor seating and vineyard views — perfect for a sunny afternoon. Family-friendly, welcoming, and with top-quality wines, this is a must-visit in Central Otago. Highly recommended!

Isabelle made our day, so friendly and patient. Great tasting flight and snacks. Beautiful new building. Almost bought a bottle or three of our favorite but $180 a bottle was a little over our price range. Thanks!! Only con, very limited menu after 3pm.

The new Wooing Tree Cellar Door is looking great. Love the new menu and staff were very welcoming. I tried the arancini balls, a lovely vegetarian option. Delicious wines too.
Wendy B — Google review
Had a fabulous time here with family and friends in their beautiful indoor setting. The staff are friendly, the chefs are amazing and the food great with detail put into the presentation. The ambience indoors is amazing it felt like we were the only ones there.
Jo E — Google review
We arrived at the Wooing tree at the same time as two other gentlemen, they were promptly taken to a table, ordered and served their beers. Meanwhile we awkwardly stood there and had to ask the man if we were allowed a table. Once we sat down no one came to greet us/take our order. 5 min later we saw two more people arrive and were seated nearby us. They again had their orders taken and served almost immediately. We had just been for a long bike ride and had two young kids and were looking forward to doing a tasting and then choosing a bottle to take home with us. We ended up leaving after 10-15 min with no one acknowledging us at all.
Olivia S — Google review
Wooing Tree was such a great find! The lunch platters were so generous and so delicious- full of home made items. And the wines were tasty and not expensive. We loved the unique white Pinot Noir. The woman who served us was down to earth and friendly. Beautiful surroundings. Google maps didn’t know the entry is opposite Roberts lane.

A second time here, and it didn’t disappoint. The menu was little bit different, but every dish was of top-quality and flavour paired beautifully with their wines. Service was great and attentive. We were aiming to eat outside in the more casual setting, but there was a table available inside, so we opted for that. One of the most picturesque wineries in the region.
Rob C — Google review
A beautiful setting inside and out, and a nice lunch. Having said that our wine flight was surprisingly sitting out in the sun before we even were at our table - and not poured fresh in front of us - thus all the wines we tasted were warm (some even hot - eew). The description of the four wines was given very quickly at the start of lunch, versus one by one as we sampled - so couldn’t remember much. Felt like a factory tour as compared to other less commercialized wineries.
Kristi H — Google review
This is a wonderful place to stop at whilst doing the Lake Dunstan Heritage bike track. We didn't eat inside but grabbed pizza and some Carrick wines and enjoyed the stunning views. An absolute must visit place. We are looking forward to having a meal here next time we are in Cromwell.

We had a fantastic experience at Carrick Winery, enjoying a relaxed afternoon with Mom, who was visiting from the UK. Sitting outside, we took in the stunning views while sampling some incredible wine flights. Each pour was beautifully presented and showcased the quality and care that goes into their wines. The atmosphere was peaceful, the service warm and welcoming, and the setting couldn’t have been more perfect. It was one of those moments where everything just felt right—great company, great wine, and a place we’d love to return to. Highly recommend!

I had a fantastic experience. Their wine, as expected, was exceptional—rich, flavorful, and well-crafted. The view from the winery is absolutely stunning, offering breathtaking vistas that enhance the overall ambiance. To top it off, the pizza was great, perfectly complementing the wine. I highly recommend a visit to Carrick for anyone looking to enjoy fine wine, delicious food, and a picturesque setting.

We were a walkin group for lunch. Welcomed in and seated in minutes. Staff wonderfully friendly. All had smiles on their faces. Service excellent food delightful and wine ........ far too enjoyable. Well worth a visit. Empty plates, empty glasses and satisfied tummies.
Peter M — Google review
We came here looking for a nice winery dining experience. Beautiful scenery here, but that was the only positive. They have no idea of how to create ambiance. Walked in to the overpowering smell fresh paint; pop radio style music; it was not warm enough (had to keep puffer jacket on). Ordered mushroom ravioli and 10 minutes later waitress comes back to tell me I’ll be getting pumpkin ravioli which I don’t like. Visit for a coffee and see the stunning lake view. Skip the restaurant.

The cafe provides an excellent selection of coffee and delicious lunch items, including sandwiches and quiches. Visitors can enjoy their meals by the window while taking in the picturesque lake scenery. The cafe's warm and convivial atmosphere, along with genuine hospitality from the staff, adds to the overall experience.
We absolutely love this place!! We have been living in Cromwell for 4 months and this was our go to cafe! You have all you need there, good coffee and lovely views. It is in the old part of the city so you can also grab a nice take away and just have a walk around the old buildings or just take a seat outside and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The staff is also very nice. From the food we especially enjoyed some sweet treats like brownie ☕️ it can get a little crowded on Sunday morning during the Farmer’s Market that’s happening nearby but it’s still alright. Definitely recommend!! I think its worth the visit.

Paid $14 for the Chicken Sammie, and $13 for the bacon buttie. After a 30min wait for coffee and food it was, crap. I can make a better sandwich at home. So don't waste your money, pick food from cabinet to be safe. Location is beautiful but sad food and coffee.

Lovely little place to grab a quick snack when touring the area. The prices are super reasonable, the staff are attentive, the food tastes good, and the coffee beans used are top notch.

We called in here when in the area and what a find. Such a neat cafe with such a lovely welcome from the staff. We had the most delicious toasted sandwiches (beef and scrumptious fillings and my hubby had the chicken n cranberry) and they were amazing. Really hit the spot. The flat white coffees were so good we had seconds. We ended up going back another 2 days in a row and received just the same warm welcome and delicious cheese rolls n coffees. Cromwell this is a wonderful cafe and in such a gorgeous setting either inside or outside in the sun overlooking the lake. Thank you …

Nice little cafe dating from 1870 in what’s left of the old town after the valley was flooded for the hydro electric power generation. There is seating inside and also outside just across the road overlooking the lake. Good choice of food and the coffee was acceptable

Stopped here after three when had a late drive back from Queenstown and no lunch. Staff very pleasant. Counter food only at that time but I had the kiwi breakfast pie which was really yummy. Topped with a hash brown filled with a mini Dave lot egg baked beans. My sister had the filed croissant which was freshly made ham off the bone and cheese. Our coffees were excellent and the cafe lovely.

At this slice of heaven, we sat in the sun and had the best customer experience we've had in yonks. Anywhere. Paul looked after us so beautifully. A warm, convivial manner, genuine hospitality go a long way. The special Prima jalapeno bacon sandwich was our favourite, followed by a gorgeous lemon cake. Extremely lovely latte, served with vintage spoons. Of course the view pulled the whole thing together. We'd been recommended another spot that was shut, but it was our lucky day. Thank you so much Paul for making our day - we'd got stranded after our flight was cancelled but you made it so relaxing, we will be back on all our trips to Cromwell.
