Rayleigh Windmill, a 200-year-old Grade II listed landmark in Essex, was originally built in 1809 and now serves as a history museum and event space. The windmill offers free entry with a suggested donation and houses an accredited museum providing information about its previous productions and the nearby Rayleigh Mount castle. It is also a popular venue for weddings and civil ceremonies.
Unusual thing to find so close to the High Street. The volunteers are very friendly helpful and knowledgeable. Worth a visit but you must be physically fit to climb the stairs as there’s no disabled access to the upper floors. Check opening times/days before going.

A lovely mill dates back to the early 1800s. Fully restored and open to the public some weekend, you will need to check the website. Carpark on site, park for free on Sunday.

Havent been in, noticed it while stuck in traffic. Not well signposted.

Just the most perfect romantic place for pur wedding. The team are lovely too - thank you ensuring our day was as wonderful as the weather ❤️

Visited today - really interesting history of the windmill and the surrounding area of rayleigh mount and the site of the old castle - we received a very warm welcome from the staff there who were very helpful and knowledgeable ( i believe they're violunteers) no entry fee but a donation is greatly appreciated .
Julie H — Google review
Windmill transformed into a museum of local history; and which is also used as a venue for weddings. It is staffed by volunteers who are very knowledgeable about the history of the windmill, and of Rayleigh. They have done a great job in restoring its' appearance, though most of the original windmill working mechanism is no longer in place. It's picturesque. However, if you are a windmill buff, you might find it a little unimpressive. Worth an hour's visit.

Castle
Rayleigh Mount, managed by the National Trust, is a former castle site that now serves as a public space for wildlife observation, leisurely walks, and cultural activities. Although the actual castle no longer stands, it remains an area of historical significance and natural beauty. Visitors can enjoy scenic views from the top of the mount and explore trails with informative signage. The site also features a windmill and a museum nearby.
Peaceful and hidden spots in the park. Walking trails and nice view from top of the mount. Park has a small pond where you can normally find swan shilla with her mates floating around.
Harman S — Google review
A place of historic importance but nothing of the actual Castle remains, the site is more of a nature reserve but still a nice place to go for some peace. To climb to the top you have to quite physically fit.
Gary H — Google review
Short walk up to the Mount. Has beauiful views bad sadly because of the overgrown shrubs you cannot see much but still there is some good views. Windmill at the bottom but only open saturdays. There is Museum that is a must visit too and only 5 mins away next to Pizza express on the high street. We also found halal food from Sushi Bento and Riva (turkish cuisine) both on the high street.

Some lovely wildflowers to spot. Helpful signs to help navigate. Didn't know was only Essex castle recorded in Domesday book, all that effort to build and wasn't attacked once. So I guess it worked

A pleasant little slip through up to the town. The pond need a bit more Walter. I loved the weave fencing. And the view from the top

A beautiful and peaceful place hidden away in the heart of the town. Hard to believe it's just off the High Street. So fun of wildlife and with great views out over Sweyne Park.
Ricky R — Google review
A pleasant nature park with some interesting trails. The kids enjoyed exploring different views and there is a nice view from the top of the Mount itself.

Great spot for a relaxed walk with a historical background. Well maintained by the groundskeeper with lots of wild flowers.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Hadleigh Castle, a ruined 13th-century fortress refortified by Edward III during the Hundred Years War, offers stunning views of the marshlands. Situated on a London clay hill in open countryside west of Southend, it served as both a defensive stronghold and royal residence. The castle overlooks the Thames Estuary and provides opportunities for scenic walks along the estuary.
Although it's only ruins, the site is steeped in history and offered a lovely space to watch the sunrise/sunset, play, enjoy a family picnic and explore the history. Family friendly, lovely for couples and a perfect hang out for teenagers too.
Katie L — Google review
Peaceful, historical and picturesque. Nice area to picnic if the weather is good. Great views. I recommend sensible footwear as there is a short walk from the car park and a lot of uneven surfaces. The same reason it's not entirely wheelchair friendly but not impossible either. A few sign boards with illuustrations to explain the history. My only gripe is I wish people would take notice of the "do not climb on the walls" signs. It's not a playground!
Iggy E — Google review
Atmospheric little ruined castle occupying an impressive vantage point overlooking the Thames estuary. Much of the building has collapsed but the two drum towers and some foundations remain. The castle dates back to the early 13th century but was significantly upgraded in the 14th century, when it gained the distinctive towers still seen today. Well presented information boards situated around the site explain more about the castle's history. The castle ruins are free to visit and open all year round. Robust footwear is essential as the ground is muddy and very slippery when wet. It's this ground that contributed to the castle's downfall, as the foundations were unstable. There are no onsite facilities and no official parking, but there are a few spaces by the roadside a few minutes walk away.

Wonderful place to visit if passing through to Southend. I hopped off the train at Leigh on Sea and did the easy hike to the castle remains. Great views and history. Hop back on the train and continue on your way. It can be muddy on the trail if it has been raining.
Keith P — Google review
So cool! Free entry, nobody around, you just walk in and have a look. It's a 13th century castle, with a few remaining towers and foundations. There are signs around that tell you what each part you're looking at used to be (kitchen, north east tower, etc). There's a nice walk from the town centre to the castle ruins, and a lovely view of the water and the houses (interesting for someone not from the UK). It would be a lovely place to walk the dog (if I had one), for a picnic, or just for a wander around like we did. Great history, nice views, and a lovely quiet spot!
Julia D — Google review
This is such a natural beauty. Fantastic scenery/views. History boards with fascinating facts and photos. Perfect for all the family. Not great for wheelchair users sadly. Free to visit. If you can, take a chair. Enjoy a picnic. Great for our fur babies too

Pub
The Rayleigh Lodge is a historic pub that has been given a modern update and features a restaurant serving Thai cuisine. It offers outdoor seating for guests to enjoy their meals. Situated in Rayleigh's charming historic high street, the lodge is an independent Italian restaurant and pizzeria housed in a grade II listed building dating back to 1969. The establishment overlooks Holy Trinity Church with its 15th-century tower and delightful grounds.
Have visited this pub various times over the past few years but must leave a review based on having Christmas dinner here. Brilliant! Thoroughly recommend
Natasha G — Google review
Had a meal with friends (five), overall experience was good. The food was excellent! Friendly, helpful customer service and lovely staff. The restaurant area is comfortable and quiet to eat and chat. Unfortunately at times I felt the restaurant was little chaotic. The pub was busy when entering, it did take a while to be seated at the restaurant area. Once at the restaurant area, we had to order our own food & drinks or by the app. This meant ordering food, from the busiest part of the pub. Sadly I didn’t feel the full restaurant experience. Overall my experience was good, I would return again, but during a quieter period.

We used to like going here because it was very dog friendly. They couldn't be more accommodating with how nice they were, with a doggy menu, including a puppuccino. Last time we went we were told that there is no dog menu any more due to health land safety reasons?? So on this basis I'm now judging it purely as a pub. The decor is okay and the beers reasonably priced, however, the food is poor and not great value. It's a shame as I was willing to overlook this as it was somewhere we could take the dog and give her a treat, but now won't be going back any time soon.

Been twice in the last 2 months, Christmas meal & New Years Day. Firstly, was very impressed with the food….. piping hot, good size portions and delicious. The service at our Christmas meal was good, however, the lack of decent service on New Year’s Day was a shame. I get it’s a ‘pub’ and there’s no-one to greet you as such, but it is a shame you have to find someone to ask where to sit. There were 2 ladies serving, the one with the longer hair is much more helpful & friendly than the other one- who plonked our cutlery at the end of the table without saying anything! I would go back as the good is so good, but I feel the service does need improving from some of the staff.

We attended on New Years Eve for a late lunch and a few drinks. The staff are very friendly and attentive. The restaurant has a relaxed atmosphere, nice decor, spotless restrooms, excellent selection of drinks. We also visited in the summer before its renovation and sat on the front lawn, plenty of tables, and a handy app for ordering drinks.
James T — Google review
Group Christmas meal with 19 people. Initially it was nice, pub has been redone so it looks lovely. As with all group meals you have the list of who has what. Our server/front of house didn’t have a list which is unusual and despite confirming who was having what things arrived not on the list. We were initially asked to pay for them as they weren’t told otherwise but the meals weren’t on our list. No problem, initially it was only 1 extra but then 2 extra deserts arrived so the maths doesn’t add up there. We explained we had come in with an updated list in advance and everything had been organised and was written down (Christmas meals with lots of people are often a nightmare). Our server said she wasn’t told this so essentially it wasn’t her problem and we needed to pay. Finally it was agreed we didn’t as I pointed out that a lack of communication between staff isn’t our fault. This whole thing would have been absolutely fine and I would’ve been grateful for fast service and nice food especially with a noisy work meal. However some things ruined it completely: both staff rolling their eyes when people didn’t answer quick enough for what they ordered, “if you won’t answer I’ll just leave it” (genuinely 5 seconds and people were working it out with the list), slinging plates on the table, comments between both servers. Sadly everyone noticed and because of this we didn’t leave a tip. Patience and a smile doesn’t cost anything especially if you’re in hospitality

2x dietary needs- gluten & garlic intolerant, gluten & lactose intolerant. Manager Tom spent time listening to my and my friend's needs. He then spent time with Chef, Dan, going through the evening menu and Festive menus to decide which items on the menu were safe for us both. Tom then typed up a safe-choice menu for us to choose from! What an absolute star! I took a typed menu choice back in advance of the night I had booked. On the night, Tom and his staff could not have been more accommodating and friendly. I have noise sensitivity, so Tom even found us a table in a quieter area! The food was cooked exactly as requested, it was all delicious and safe for us. There is a separate fryer for gluten free foods and a separate prep area which was cleaned down before our food was prepared. I am back there later this month, and I am really looking forward to it, knowing I will be safe to eat there. Thank you Tom and Dan and all the staff!

Restaurant
Prezzo Italian Restaurant Rayleigh is a casual Italian chain offering stone-baked pizzas, classic pastas, and a separate kids' menu. It's situated in a charming historic high street overlooked by Holy Trinity Church. The restaurant has received positive feedback for its nice food and good company, although some have noted that the service can be slow when the restaurant is full. Additionally, it will replace a popular Chinese takeaway that recently closed on the High Street.
Great food and lovely friendly staff. Had not realised it was the last evening of school half term holiday and it was full of families with young children and extremely busy. The wait staff seemed to be run off their feet but were really friendly and served us quicker than expected given how busy it was. Calamari was amazing and the black forest sundae for dessert was delicious.
P3 N — Google review
To say something is very wrong would be an understatement. My friends and I have eaten at this particular Prezzo for years, and never usually had problems...however, recently things have gone rather wrong. The order sizes have shrunk, especially the pasta dishes. We usually order the spaghetti carbonara with added chicken....it used to come in a lovely large dish and now it's a tiny portion with 4 or 5 tiny bits of chicken (which for an extra £3 is ridiculous). But more worrying was the serious lack of communication between staff. I understand it's a busy time of year, but the restaurant can only get so busy as there are only a set number of tables. So surely the staff should be able to handle it at it's busiest, if not then management need to restructure their staffing needs. On our last visit for example, we waited 45 minutes for our food, and when it came the waitress bought our desserts before our mains....took them back....then we waited a further hour for our mains to finally arrive (que the disappointment in the tiny carbonara) then a further hour past whilst we waited for our desserts which they had tried to serve us previously....in the end we told them to cancel the desserts and asked for the bill so we could just leave. The table next to us were having the same problem and also decided to leave half fed. £50+ it cost me for the privilege of two tiny dishes and a couple of fruit juices over the time span of 3 hours of waiting.....and it then took 4 staff members just to sort out our total and give me the bill. But sure, take my £50 I guess. I sincerely hope things improve.

We had a family meal at Prezzo Rayleigh. Overall the food was nice, my sticky toffee pudding wasn’t cooked very doughy. The service could be a lot better a couple of staff were poor could do with more training. We said we had some Tesco vouchers to waitress and asked for bill instead of bringing the bill she bought her machine and started scanning our vouchers I asked if we could see bill but said she has to scan vouchers first I said how are we meant to know how much our bill is then ? It spoilt our evening as it took over 30 minutes to sort out.
Jane W — Google review
It was chaos. Staff running about and then standing around at the bar wondering what to do. It took 50 minutes for us to get our drinks order (which was wrong), our starters came out five minutes after but they forgot one. We then waited another hour for our main meals. Inbetween the starters and main we ordered some more drinks which took 30 minutes (even though we could see them being prepared on the bar). One of our party left to get a take away as the mains took that long. The waitress was apologetic and when we asked for the bill she asked if we had any vouchers! I pointed out the terrible service we’d had, and that maybe they should be offering a discount. She went to manager to find out. 20 minutes later we got our bill. They did take money off but I would never ever go back. It was a disaster.
Keeley R — Google review
I've eaten here before (years ago) and the food and atmosphere was nice. It wasn't hugely busy for a late Friday evening, but the whole feel of the restaurant was "grim" Food took 30 minutes for starters and almost hour for main. Food was inedible, cutlery was dirty, a hugely disappointing experience for us both so made a swift exit. Stopped off for food elsewhere on our way back! Such a shame but never again!
Mille H — Google review
Food was nice but not much chicken for the extra £3. Drinks are quite expensive. Service was excellent and so added the tip to my card payment. Note, card payment only at this restaurant. Music was a little loud for my taste and not really necessary.
Malcolm L — Google review
Best calamari I’ve had!! Been here a few times and the starters have been amazing every time but unfortunately the mains don’t live up to the expectations. Pastas don’t have enough sauce and pizzas are too dry. The calzone wasn’t too bad. Overall, the starters are great but mains need to be improved.
Abigail G — Google review
Not a problem with quality of food or service, yes a bit pricey but you get what you pay for these days but OMG no cash accepted. This could’ve been so embarrassing and unfortunately that’s put me off. Maybe the Bank of England should reconsider rewording the notes, crazy world. Sorry Prezzo, I think you need to reconsider, maybe a contributing factor towards your restaurants closing down

Italian restaurant
La Romantica Restaurant is a charming Italian eatery located in Rayleigh's historic high street. Housed in a cozy Grade II listed building, the restaurant offers classic Italian cuisine in a low-lit dining room with exposed beams, creating an enduring and relaxed atmosphere. The welcoming ambiance makes diners feel like they are stepping into someone else's home, with warm lighting and colorful artwork adding to the homely feel.
Meal of my life! I am lucky to have had many good meals in my life, however on Saturday night I had the best meal ever at La Romantica. Words simply cannot sum up my experience. It is like being dropped into Italy with such a warm welcoming but busy restaurant. We was greeted with a special board which made my eyes light up! The lobster and prawn tagliatelle is without a shadow of a doubt the best thing I have ever eaten, this was complimented with hands down the best garlic bread topped with tomato and chilli which somehow meet the obscenely high standards of the pasta. Overall this was an absolutely phenomenal meal. Simply the best, I cannot wait to go back!

The staff here are very polite and friendly. We were sat at a table and had food on our table within 10 minutes. Atmosphere is clean and orderly, though a bit cramped, but utilizes the space well. The pepperoni pizza was wonderful. Perfect place for a nice dinner out at a great price.

First impressions matter and this spot is very cozy with a fantastic atmosphere and friendly authentic staff. £43 for three courses with Ravioli as a main, which was absolutely gorgeous. Ensure you reserve a table as there is limited seating! Would definitely come here again!

Went for a nice family meal for my birthday and I must say the food was amazing. Probably the best Italian I've ever had. Nice family feel to the restaurant. Overall good value for money and will be definitely going again

We booked a table at La Romantica Restaurant in Rayleigh High Street for our Christmas day dinner. Obviously with the popularity of this restaurant we had to book several months in advance. On entering the restaurant we were greeted with that lovely Italian warmth and hospitality, a certain something special, that only the very best restaurants seem to be able to achieve. We were shown to our table and offered drinks. Considering the fact that every table was taken, it didnt feel over occupied or claustrophobic. The food we ordered and it's arrival was amazingly quick, boiling hot and the flavour was so good I can't even put it into words. Portion sizes are extremely generous. We don't consider ourselves as food experts, but honestly the flavours in this restaurant really are magnificent, even simple vegetables seem to taste a 100 times better. There was no rushing us to order our desserts or coffees and baring in mind that all the staff were working on Christmas day, they all seemed happy, attentive and looked like they actually enjoyed what they were doing. I genuinely can't praise this place, it's staff and the chef's high enough. Thanks to all the staff, the Chefs etc for a really wonderful Christmas experience, we will definitely be back soon. I'd give this place a rating of 10 if I could but I can only give it 5 stars but it's honestly worth more. Please see my pictures, thanks for reading 🙂 👍 🇮🇹

I’ve ordered from here for years and never had any problems. I ordered today and took it home, I started eating it and had to spit it out as there was a 3cm bone in my sandwich (I ordered a chicken tikka sub). Not happy at all
Patch M — Google review
Unlocked subway secret menu! Just ordered 2 breakfast subs. One on toasted bread and one on untoasted. Apparently if you order untoasted according to the shop this includes not cooking the ingredients as well. Frozen meat, raw bacon and frozen hashbrowns and a hair. I have all these ingredients in the freezer at home (apart from the hair) but was too lazy to cook it. I now have to cook my takeaway but I’ve been charged £21 for the pleasure. So next time when you go to Subway and ask for untoasted bread, just make sure you ask them to cook the food inside. Absolute joke. Avoid this place.
Thehawkeyeguy — Google review
Every time I order food from the Rayleigh store, the portions are tiny, well under what you get from other stores, it's like OCD'ness on portion control. Certainly feel that you are got getting value for money. I wil try to avoid the Rayleigh Store from now on.
Russell O — Google review
We ordered for delivery and one had hardly any chicken in it. We ordered 5 different subs and non of them were marked up, resulting in us having to open each sandwich to establish which one they were - simple mistake, but would have made the world of difference. I usually go in shop and order and never have a problem... So I will not be ordering for home delivery again.
Sanny J — Google review
It's a Subway, so few surprises. But the staff are jolly, happy & quick to serve, rarely run out of anything and the place looks clean. Good social distancing / preventative measures in place considering sandwich fillings are on display.

Service terrible, ended up walking out as been queuing for ages and a deliveroo driver turned up and they got served before us, even though we had been waiting 10mins. They need to treat customers better.
Jacqueline W — Google review
We normally really like it but on this occasion my salad had barely any chicken in it which was disappointing as I was eating more lettice than anything else, and my husbands sub had barely any filling in the ends of the bread So for the money it was not worth buying 👎
