STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway is a captivating museum located in the heart of Swindon, housed in the historic Brunel workshops. It offers an immersive experience for visitors to explore the rich heritage of Britain's Great Western Railway. The exhibits showcase world-famous locomotives, archive film footage, and a recreated station platform that evokes the glamour of the steam era. Visitors can walk under a full-size express engine, adding to the unique experience.
First of all, very good price for this big museum. I spent there 3 hours but I was reading like nearly everything. A lot of history about making trains in Swindon and trains in general. Mostly SHOCKING was the fact that trains were broad gauge before on a part of the rail line. Few trains to look at and a bit of exhibits for kids to play. Not many though. It's not kids centered and happy for that myself. They have a bit of a recreated train station too. And a small signal box with like an interactive game. Very educational into the train history. Highly recommended, absolutely nothing to complain about, highly satisfied.

One of the best places I've visited for a while, all the staff are accommodating and knowledgeable. The only issue was their car park barrier which refused anyone in or out!😂 Great place for the whole family. A number of kids area here. 100% recommended.

STEAM in Swindon is an excellent museum made up of static displays, informational videos, and interactive activities. It is a great museum whether you are interested in steam engines or are just looking for something to do. Amazing displays of the old Swindon works and a replica GWR platform are two well presented features of the museum. Boasting a large collection of Great Western locomotives, the museum allows you to walk underneath 4073 Caerphilly Castle and look inside the cab of 6000 King George V. Overall, an excellent museum with lots to look at and do, and the average person would likely spend 2-3 hours here. P.S for steam enthusiasts that want something a little extra... look next door in the designer outlet and you can catch a glimpse at 7821 Ditcheat Manor, courtesy of the West Somerset Railway.

🚂 Full Steam Ahead for an Amazing Day Out! 🚂 STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway in #Swindon is housed in the beautifully restored Swindon Railway Works. But this place isn’t just about trains—it’s about the people, the innovation, and the golden age of rail travel. 🚉✨ From stunning locomotives to hands-on exhibits, the storytelling here is superb. You’re not just looking at old engines—you’re stepping into the workshops, pulling signal levers, and even trying your hand at driving a steam train (spoiler: harder than it looks! 😅). The interpretation is spot-on—engaging, immersive, and never dry. 🎟 Top Highlights: 🚆 Climb aboard historic locomotives and feel the power of steam! 🛠 Explore the workshops where Swindon’s railway town comes to life. 🎩 Meet Brunel (well, his statue)—still looking dapper as ever! Even if you’re not a train buff, you’ll leave feeling converted. This is history done right—fun, fascinating, and full of steam-powered magic. 🔥🚂 Absolutely worth a visit!

Excellent day out for adults and younger. Plenty of steam trains and related exhibits provide plenty to do and see. However, if you're visiting by car read the parking page on their website as they don't have a car park - I parked in the nearby designer outlet one and it was very reasonably priced.

Absolutely brilliant museum, very well laid out with loads of information. Stunning displays. Very well worth a visit.

Excellent museum, we visited with our children on a home-education visit. We did the WW2 bunker experience which was very engagingly described by a member of the museum staff, accompanied by some genuine artifacts from the 1940s. I also particularly enjoyed seeing the real life King George V steam locomotive, the very engine I had on my childhood trainset. Well worth a visit. Parking is the parking for the shopping centre.

Fantastic place with amazing trains, you can even go underneath the train and see how it looks. So much stuff to do. I was able to use there mobility scooter as I'm disabled. Café a little expensive £17 for 3 drinks and 3 flapjacks

Loved this outlet. Loved the architecture. They have a nice food court. Children's play area. Plenty of benches and seats to sit down and rest. Parking is across the road which is very big. They have a cute little train that goes around the outlet.

Excellent range of shots and restaurants. Very clean and spacious. Gents W/C could be a bit bigger as there was a queue to use the facilities.

For us, it is a place where we can go easily by car or public transport. Walking distance from GWR railway station. There are many options for everyone from family . You can get clothes, furniture, make-up stuff, kitchen appliances, accessories for decoration, and plenty more things with decent price to higher range depending upon your pocket or budget 😀. For us, it is an outday activity as to go there 😀 buy some stuff for everyone, relax , get some food also . My recommendation is that you can go there at least 1-2 times a year.
Sumit T — Google review
Very good selection of ,,down to earth,, shops comparing to Bicester. NEXT could look better, as it is a total chaos and clothes aren’t in order. But all other shops are great. It is also very nice that parking is free if you spend 100£!
Tatjana S — Google review
Really excellent shopping centre with every shop you could want there. My wife and I both got bargains in the various stores.. Quality gear at very good prices.. It is located in the old Great Western Railway engine sheds and I loved the utilisation of an old building. They have kept some of the infrastructure like overhead gantry cranes to demonstrate the machinery installed for use manoeuvring trains around.. Excellent.

Specialty Museums
Located in Theatre Square, the Museum of Computing in Swindon offers a fascinating journey through the history of computing. Run by volunteers, this museum showcases hands-on exhibits and retro game displays that trace the evolution of computing technology. From primitive calculating devices to vintage Macintosh and PCs, visitors can explore a 75-year timeline of computer technology. The museum also features active displays and serves as a platform for lectures on computing history.
My 2 children and I, along with some other families had a lovely experience here. It really seems to be a hidden gem in Swindon. The staff were all very helpful and knowledgeable. The place is full of old computers and games to play. My 7 year old and I had a long session of competitive Pong! The highlights for me were playing Lemmings and original Mario. It was eye-opening for the kids to see how gaming has changed over the years. Ticket price is very reasonable as you can stay there as long as you want and leave for lunch/come back. Fab way to spend a rainy day in Swindon!
Natalie A — Google review
Excellent collection of early computers and gaming devices, mostly from the 70s and 80s. If, like me, you run out of fingers counting the machines on display that you once owned then you're officially getting old! So plenty of nostalgia for the older visitors and a glimpse of what oldies played with in their youth for the younger visitors. Overall not to be missed by any self-respecting techo-nerd :-)
Andrew T — Google review
I had a blast playing Prince of Persia on an Amstrad era Sinclair and good talk with the owner who filled me in on some of the history . Lots to try and do. Thoroughly recommended .

Amazing nostalgia fest for kids and grown ups of all ages. Friendly knowledgeable staff makers this a museum to visit
Jonneh — Google review
We booked a private visit for a home ed group today. This included a 2 hour exclusive visit and a scratch coding lesson if wanted (for approx 8years+) The kids had so much fun playing the retro game consoles and on the computers. They also had lots of things in display cases and information all around. Staff were fantastic with the kids and explained how things worked when needed. I honestly cannot recommend enough! Rest assured all the screens and lighting worked perfectly- it is just my camera.
Hiker M — Google review
Most of the computers are set up so you can play with them. I'm old enough to have seen a lot of the tech on display released new but even I learnt stuff and got to play with things I hadn't before. Well worth the visit
Dorjan24 — Google review
Absolutely fantastic museum. Loads of great exhibits, with really clear information. Best part is there are dozens of hands on machines to play with. Experience what it was like loading games from tape. Play the original Lemmings on an Amiga 500. Set a new high score in Duck Hunt. Staff really friendly too and great for families. Highly recommended.
Andy T — Google review
We stumbled upon this place today, and couldn't resist popping in to take a look. Wow! Such an amazing collection, and so many machines on for you to play with. I had a chat with one of the volunteers about the Amiga and Atari ST. He suggested I have a look at the ST, and see if it could match the Amiga (I was an Amiga fan back in the day). Unfortunately, he was busy talking to someone else when it came time to leave, so I wasn't able to confirm that the Amiga was indeed king in that particular battle. Anyway, I digress. The volunteers are friendly and willing to chat if you want to. The price was a massive surprise. For the fun we had, we feel the visit was an absolute bargain. If you have the slightest interest in computers or video games, you have to pay this place a visit.

Art museum
The Swindon Museum and Art Gallery is a cultural gem, showcasing an extensive collection of artifacts spanning from prehistoric times to the modern era. The museum boasts a remarkable assortment of 20th-century British art, featuring works by renowned artists such as Lowry and Nash. Situated in the heart of Swindon's burgeoning cultural quarter, this newly designed structure near the Wyvern Theatre serves as a cradle for safeguarding these precious assets.
Love the new museum, only thing I'd change is; make it bigger. Love the building and the fact that the displays change every couple of months. Enter through the main doors, head up the stairs (or lift) The history part is on your left, the art on the left, shop in the middle. Unfortunately no cafe. The history part is great for locals, taking us back for some geology dinosaurs and then though prehistory, Roman and middle ages to modern day. Loved the boards on the walls - full of facts about Swindon very well written. Great for taking kids as there is lots to look at

Visited for the first time at the new location, we were with our grandchildren 9 & 7. The girls especially enjoyed the interactive items and the pocket money gems & crystals. Inspired by the visit they set up a museum when they arrived home. The team were all friendly and informative.

A lovely little look into local history, topped off with some of the most interesting art I have yet seen come out of Swindon. Would love to pop back when they have an event on.
Jacob M — Google review
Wow! Impressive. My only complaint concerns one area where it is woke. I refer to the large sword on display with a notice advising that the owner's bones were removed to afford him some dignity! Other museums display ancient bones. Come on! Not down THAT road.
Jeff A — Google review
We visited with our grandson. Plenty to keep him interested. Not very big and no cafe on site but did enjoy the Lowry painting especially.
Clive E — Google review
Visited this morning with a friend and was pleasantly surprised how interesting this new museum is. We spent about an hrs and a half looking around. The exhibitions were amazing. Not at all crammed as there is so much space. And the forthcoming exhibitions look very interesting as well. It's about time Swindon had a proper museum. Well done all who had a hand in it. If you need a volunteer ever just let me know. I encourage everyone to visit.
Sarah C — Google review
Very nice little museum for looking into local history in Swindon back to the stone age. Has a little shop and toilets too.
Andrew T — Google review
Alright for a short excursion but don't expect a day out. Some interesting items. The art section was particularly disappointing, the standard was that of school kids art. And Swindon wants to waste money on a art gallery, please don't if this is what your are going to fill it with.

Located in Swindon, the Wyvern Theatre is a versatile venue that offers a wide range of entertainment options. With a 635-seat auditorium and two bars, including one offering pre-show food, it's an ideal destination for an evening of dance, comedy, drama, or music.
Went to see Billy and Louie of " The Voice" fame. Had a coffee in the foyer prior. There was also a downstairs bar for snacks and drinks. All seats were comfortable with sufficient leg space with excellentview whereveryou sat. Very clean, looked as though it may have recently been renovated?. Car parking directly outside for £2.50 was greatly appreciated. We'll worth a visit.

ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC SHOW 👏 👌 Went to the wyvern production of cinderella last night 06/12/2024 I haven't laughed so much for a longtime. David Ashley as Molly Miggins and Ben Goffe as Buttons were Amazing 👏 🤩 😍 They should be starting at the London Palladium. Thank you for a really brilliant show.

Took my class here for a school trip to the Cinderella Pantomime; it was a fantastic venue and worth the journey. Every seat has a good view of the stage and the production was fantastic. I would now look at events here for myself and my own children to come to.

Went to see Tap Factory at Wyvern recently. Car Parking is not easy as very limited spaces close to the Theatre. Nice cafe/bar area selling good drink options. Food options pretty limited. We had a great view of the stage from our seats in the Stalls. Sound quality was very good. Staff were helpful and friendly.
Tony Z — Google review
Nice theatre, fabulous friendly staff and varied menu for snacks and drinks. A large glass of wine at 250ml I think is on the dear side at £10.90 while a large baileys is £5.80. Soft drinks are around £4. Porpcorn, crisps, savoury snacks £3-£5 and chocolate bags £4. Front row is a little too near the stage if you like to not have your feet under you, seats however are an average size.
Southern W — Google review
Nice venue, comfortable seats. Good view from seat..sound was very good. Staff very very friendly, only down side was how expensive the drinks are in the bar.
Paul C — Google review
The venue is on the smallish side. There is a car park just outside which was £2 for over two hours after 6PM (£1 if under 2 hours). My favourite band was performing there. They sound better in some other (bigger) venues, maybe something to do with acoustics. Tickets on the phone were accepted 👍

The Sally Pussey's Inn is a relaxed and classic gastropub with a menu of pub-style dishes. The atmosphere is friendly and the staff are helpful, making it an excellent place to stop for a traditional Sunday roast on your journey home.
Just had the best Full English Breakfast I’ve had in a while!!! Obviously they use good products. Very tasty (first place I’ve found good fried bread in a while) Restaurant very cozy, good service too.

I found Sally very accommodating, with a warm welcome. I went with the lamb shank and do recommend it, on a bed of creamy mash and a separate bowl of vegetables. I finished my evening with something sweet and sticky, delicious. Next time I'm in the area I'll make sure I pop in. I would like to add a mention for the staff who were attentive, but not overbearing. It's always good to into a restaurant where the staff are happy and smiling. A big thank you to Sally for providing a pleasurable evening for me and my three guests.

I had the braised beef and ale stew, and my sister had the beef fajitas. My sister thought the fajitas were the best ever and I really enjoyed mine. A couple of pints of Madri and my sister just had tonic waters. Would thoroughly recommend as all other dishes coming out looked equally delicious.

Went here for a Sunday Carvery. OMG what a great place. The Carvery was absolutely fantastic. Menu has so many good dishes to offer. Will have to do a number of visits I we want to try the other dishes.
James H — Google review
we spent a wonderful hour and a half, the food was delicious and at a very nice price, this is the moment when for the price you get more than you expect. The food was prepared very quickly for three people in under 20 minutes. Having read the reviews, I was ready for the 'grumpy' Lady 😄, so it was not a surprise for me. She reminded me of the famous cat and made me want to smile all the time 🤭. The only downside is the pressure about an hour and a half, during online booking this appeared 2 or 3 times, although no one told us about it in the restaurant, but when I came with friends, I had to control myself and look at my watch all the time, which of course makes the visit not so comfortable and pleasant. I can also understand the owners of the restaurant, since it is in great demand. We were on Friday at 2 pm and there were noticeably a lot of people. If you come in a company for a few hours to relax, you will probably need to look for another place, here - eat and leave

We came over to here on the spur of the moment, my son had a table booking for two, then phoned and asked to increase it to four people👍 We have been coming here for years! It has always been a fantastic place to come and eat out, with quality food and a lovely atmosphere. It's generally a busy place, but more so with the build up to Christmas, with lots of work events being held in groups. There is a huge conservatory at the front end, which has seating, a middle bar section with nicely spaced tables. There is also a carvery area at the left hand side of the building too, all these are positioned around the central bar. This place is huge! Service was very prompt, there was so much choice from the menu, we had to have more time to choose!🤷‍♂️😆 We ordered drinks and food at the same time. Well it wasn't long before all our meals turned up😋 The size of the meals are very big, so make sure you have a great appetite! They did offer a take out box if we couldn't eat it all👍 There is a section of small meals to choose from, which is brilliant. The food was very tasty and great value, we were very impressed! This is a place to come and try, if you haven't been before👍 A huge car park here and some disabled access parking. Can't wait to come back and chose more from the menu😋😀

Amazing food. Good service from the waitress. Establishment very clean. HOWEVER…. Sadly the proprietor or manager is always gruff and unpleasant. Every visit. Time and time again. So unnecessary. Pick up your skirt and figure out if you want to be in hospitality or not. You have customers who want to frequent the place, but without your lousy attitude. P.S. stop overcharging people. Not ok. Edit: another occasion we went our food had been burnt.

Asian fusion restaurant
Kenzo 72 is a contemporary kitchen and bar in Swindon, offering a luxurious and exclusive dining experience. The modern bar is perfect for evening cocktails before hitting the late-night clubbing venues in Old Town. The restaurant serves up a variety of global tapas with an Asian flair, as well as American steaks and cocktails. The ambience inside is modern with an oriental twist, creating a great atmosphere for diners.
Decided to stop on way back from Wales. It was just before 21:00, the restaurant was empty on a quiet Tuesday evening. We had calamari, prawns, wings, beef skewers and fried aubergine for starters, they are all fantastic. For mains, we had ribs with chips and mixed grill. They are all a bit on the big side, we struggled but still couldn't finish everything. We loved every bit of food, they were well made and tasted excellent. It came to just under 40 per head including cocktails.

Absolutely amazing steak! Booked a table for the all you can eat steak and got so full we left early. They had the best steak meat I have tried in the UK and you can keep asking for more. The sides were also very tasty and you get to choose another every time you ask for more steak. Absolutely recommend! My new favourite restaurant in Swindon.

Lovely food and excellent service. I don't give 5 stars, I give genuine reviews. The 'Beef on the Rocks' is brilliant as is the Black Cod. The Kenzo Classics as a tapas/sharing vibe are also tasty. Really, really good Halloumi Fries. Wine is very reasonably priced - a small (6 of which 3 can be by the glass) but good selection.

First time dinning at this infamous venue and restaurant highly recommended by locals. Loads of good dishes to choose from. Was a great dining experience and would highly recommend and be more than happy to back regularly. Had the vietnamese baby squid starters which was well executed. Then had the Grilled Chicken with mustard sauce, succulent and well cooked chicken with herby mustard sauce packed with flavour. Then we ordered a medium rare tomahawk which was worth the wait. The choices of sides and sauces were done just right. The meat was well aged, based on its tenderness and well seasoned, full of flavour. Then finished off with sticky toffee pudding which was perfect finish for my palette. The staff, the food and ambience was exquisite and perfect for any dining experience. Will definitely be back for more food exploration. Fantastic restaurant for steak lovers. Thoroughly loved it all

Originally located on Newport Street, the restaurant has now transitioned into a fantastic takeaway spot on Devizes Road, with plans to reopen the restaurant below. The eatery is known for its delicious dishes such as fried chicken, flavorful curry, and spectacular jerk chicken.
What a place! A family run AUTHENTIC Caribbean place. Growing up in S London I tasted many yard food shops...... But this place is a little special in my opinion. All food is clearly freshly cooked and the flavors are just amazing. I recommend this place to anyone who either wants to try to best Caribbean food, or wants to try it for the first time! Hi Moshan I just wanted to say thank you for being consistently the best takeaway in Swindon. We’ve been ordering from your for years now. I know when I order from you I’m guaranteed an excellent meal. Your fried chicken is the best, your gravy we have pots frozen to reuse, the curry is fantastic and the jerk chicken is spectacular. We like ordering from your website directly as well, because we know we’ll get food delivered with care by lovely people. One man in particular is always nice and has a chat. Keep up the good work as you make our takeaway days feel worth while.

Greek restaurant
Greek Olive is a relaxed and unpretentious restaurant located on Faringdon Road in Swindon, offering traditional Greek cuisine, desserts, wine, and beer. Visitors praise the authentic and generous portions of Greek food served here. The restaurant has garnered high ratings for its warm welcome, friendly service, and delicious dishes that stay true to their Greek roots.
Fantastic restaurant, it is not the glitziest and expensive looking place but concentrates on tasty food and friendly service, oh and excellent value for money. The portion sizes are generous for the options we chose. They have a good selection of dishes of the most common Greek staples. Would advise booking as this is the second time we have visited and both days it was full. Complementary dessert and also shot at the end of the night went down well.

Amazing food, exceptional service and a birthday cake for our friend too. There were also a couple of banners around our table. As always unable to eat all of my food but boxes are available to take your leftovers home if you wish to. Cannot recommend the Greek Olive highly enough !!

A Superb Experience. The waiter was incredible. Friendly, quick and polite. The food was absolutely delicious. It was my partner's birthday and they put a balloon on our table, made a fuss of her and gave her some lovely cake with sparkler in it. Also the bill was a lot lower than expected. We will be back. Highly recommend.

Upon arrival my partner and I had to wait a few minutes for a table, in which we were offered a complimentary shot whilst we waited. The staff were super friendly and the food was served relatively quick. I had the Mixed Grill and my partner had the Chicken Gyros, they are super generous with portion sizes, excellent value for money no doubt about it. We were then offered a complimentary dessert and another shot to finish off our experience (would highly recommend getting a taxi if you like a drink 🤣) Booking in advance is recommended as they are super busy in there (to no surprise!) Dining here is a must if you are in the area, we will be back again!!

I visited the Greek Olive on the recommendation of a Greek colleague and it definitely exceeded the recommendation! From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by very friendly staff, who welcomed me to the family-run restaurant with genuine smiles. I quickly noted a variety of customers from birthday parties, families, couples, friends and locals popping in for food. I thought this boded well for my experience and I was so right! Three very generous starters of aubergine dip, prawns and sausage were served quickly. The prawns were big king size ones and there were so many of them! They were absolutely delicious but it was such a huge portion (think main course serving and then some!) that I was forced to share. The aubergine dip was lovely. Followed by the ribeye steak (cooked perfectly rare) and halloumi skewers. Both mains were again very generously portioned - see photos - but sadly were not finished due to the sheer portion sizes. We were then offered, on the house, tasting portions of dessert; apple in pastry. They were warm, crispy and delicious, however, one remained uneaten due to being so full. Overall, the Greek Olive is a wonderful, genuinely local restaurant offering very good food and incredible value for money. I will definitely be returning but having learnt from the above, will probably share one starter between 4 people or forgo a starter altogether so I have room for my main!

Visited for the first time this week. The servers were so kind, I went for a birthday meal with my friend. Large glasses of wine were top notch!! I ate the best food of my life, I couldn't stop the happy dance I was doing. We got given dessert and a shot on the house. I would come back for the service alone but I still think about the food when I lay in bed at night. I have found a new religion, and that is The Greek Olive!!

Food was amazing. I'm a very greedy person, and the portion sizes impressed even me. The service was exceptional, and the atmosphere was the same. Value for money is spot on. Probably worth booking ahead - the place was very busy and some walk-ins were politely turned away!

Nestled at the corner of Newport Street and Devizes Road, Mabel's Old Town is a delightful coffee shop that has quickly become a favorite among locals. With its charming atmosphere reminiscent of European cafes, it offers an inviting outdoor seating area perfect for soaking up the sun while enjoying their exceptional coffee and hot chocolate. The Pain au Raisin is a must-try treat that pairs beautifully with their expertly crafted flat whites.
Really good coffee Friendly service. Pretty exterior colour theme. Planet friendly takeaway cups for their hot drinks. Good size and comfortable outdoor seating area.

I've visited Mabel's a few times over the last year. It's conveniently located on the corner of Newport Street and Devizes Road. They've great tasting coffee, and wow, a superb Pain au Raisin - tried one today and loved it. A flat white and my treat cost a reasonable £5.40 I used the conveniently located on-Street parking across the road. Just be aware the coffee shop is card only. Definitely recommend and will continue to visit both here and their sister shop in Tadpole.

Had heard good things about Mabels.but was really disappointed. I was hoping sandwiches would be freshly made but it was the standard coffee shop chilled selection. I had a tuna melt which was the worst I had ever had. Bread was like rock and the filling tasted like vinegar..thin, runny and unpleasant to taste. My partner asked if there was a toilet and told no...I get there is no legal requirement for a small cafe but the staff member made no effort to help or suggest somewhere to go (presumably staff use somewhere). In fact she was more interested in playing on her phone than helping us. There are much better cafes in Old Town...we won't be back to this one.

Mabel's are card only. The staff looked me up and down and said we don't deal with that stuff (my cash) as though it's dirty stuff. I said I only ever use cash, said how the use of cash has increased and they said we don't care. I replied you've permanently lost my custom I'll find some where else that accepts cash and has better staff. They shrugged their shoulders and said whatever, who's next, to which I then left

Coffee is poor for an outlet that 'specialises' in all things coffee. I don't think the machine is up to the job as it is rarely hot enough, plus it is thin and not as good as the previous blend that they used to use. I don't bother with the pastries as they simply don't sell enough. Therefore, chances are that if you buy one it will be 2-3 days' old and a bit chewy (as I and others experienced). Ben the Barista is a nice guy and cares a lot. Nice atmos and it could be a really good place, but need to get the product right and the rest should follow. Understand though how difficult it is to run a small establishment, but please address the coffee issue.

I went in for a coffee and chocolate brownie this afternoon while my car was in for some work, excellent coffee, delicious brownie and friendly service. It's a nice place to sit and have a drink while watching the world go by. 👍

Its an absolute joy to have this wonderful coffee shop in Old Town to add to our growing cafe culture! The coffee, tea and hot chocolate are fabulous. I love the seats out front - feels like you're in Bath or in France! the staff are all very helpful and friendly. I love purchasing the fresh bread when I'm passing and the brownies are extremely popular with my girls. Well done Mabels!

Pretty nice little café. Coffee was good. Staff are friendly but not enough of them, so service was a tad slow. They don't make any of their own food, all is brought in as far as I could see, which for me is lacking in a lot of cafés, not just this one.
