Agrigento

The Sicilian city of Agrigento (Argirò in Sicilian), is a great place to visit any time of year, but especially between the months of March and September - where the weather is warm but not too hot. The city is noted for its rich Greek history, and tourists flock to visit the famed Valley of Temples, a UNESCO Heritage site consisting of seven well-preserved classical Greek temples. It is also well known for the ruins of the ancient Greek city Akragas, much of which is still being excavated today.

Sights & Landmarks
Valley of the Temples is a vast archaeological site in Sicily, featuring ancient temples and ruins of the city of Akragas. The city, known as Agrigentum to the Romans, was situated on a high plateau with a panoramic view. It boasted exceptional prosperity and magnificence, attracting foreign visitors.
Fully gratifying and fulfilling experience. Park itself is amazing. Location, vegetation, history and beauty at their best. It's everything I love about Mediterranean. I am sad that I couldn't spend few days here, not just few hours. Try to visit when it's less crowded, to really feel the place🙂

Such a beautiful place. Ancient ruins abound. We took a tour guide who described the area in detail. There are three main temples to see all in different degrees of ancient abandoned, but wondrous to see in person. Definitely a place to make a trip to. We took about two hours on our tour and that seemed to be about the right amount of time, but I’m sure you can take longer to examine all the different aspects of the site which is actually pretty large.
Peter G — Google review
A beautiful site, easy to walk around. Lots of signboards in three languages to explain things. Water fountains around the site to replenish your water bottles, which you will need, there’s lots of walking! The views of the surrounding countryside are fabulous.

Valley of the temples is such a lovely place to visit we got a train from Palermo €24 return two hours journey to Agrigento and bus journey down the hill to the site €2 well worth it , did not have to cue when we got there paid €56 for two of us and €5 for the guide on like a mobile device each . It is a lot of walking so make sure you have good comfortable foot wear and water , there is top up points for water from a tape let it run for 20sec and it is refreshing .Halfway up there is a cafe that does food and drinks really good it’s like going into a shop in Palermo. The temples are amazing to see and so big the views as you walk around and look out to sea are stunning and the town up on the hill the other way . Well worth the trip if you want to see something different, another thing to be aware of it is hot it was about 27 degrees the day we walked round so pack the sun cream as well 😎😎😎. You can do an evening visit when all the lights shine the temples up meant to be lovely as well so you have a choice trust me visit if you get the chance .

One of the most impressive places to visit, if you enjoy ancient history. Beautifully preserved, well maintained infrastructure. It is quite pricey though, at 17€ plus 5€ for a paper guide, that is a big expense

A must see while visiting Sicily. Largest Archaeological site in all of Europe. Take some good shoes because it is expansive. On Sundays entry is free. Go as early as you can as it gets crowded.
Johnsko J — Google review
Awe-inspiring ancient archeological site with very accessible temples and ruins. Surprisingly few tourists relative to the significance of the area. Fascinating features to contemplate and ohotograph throughout this stunning landscape. Bring walking shoes and buy a water at the entry - takes 2-3 hours for a complete visit.
Pete B — Google review
Even if you take a taxi one way it’s still a LOT of walking. Don’t even think about not taking the 5.00 taxi to, which is uphill, then you can walk back. Use the bathroom before you go, once there, the only bathroom is a ways from the temple. For me I wouldn’t go here u less you are bored and/or you absolutely haven’t seen anything like it. We’ve been to many similar locations, notably Greece, so I just wasn’t impressed. BUT the goats were awesome, however, doubting people go for them, but we loved them, so beautiful

History Museums
The Archaeological Museum "Pietro Griffo" of Agrigento is situated near the West Entrance of the Valley of the Temples. It's named after Pietro Griffo, an Italian archeologist, and it houses a diverse collection of artifacts such as ceramics, sculptures, coins, and jewelry. These items offer a comprehensive insight into the historical and cultural legacy of the region.
To get to know more about the history of the whole region I would highly recommend. The museum has many artifacts and is really well maintained.
Gazmend K — Google review
After visiting the Valley of the Temples it was hard to be impressed by anything but it was an interesting museum and they had a lot of exhibitions. Only a 5 minute car ride from the Valley.
X X — Google review
The museum was very modern and clean facility. However, the displays were mostly of pottery, broken pottery, pottery shards, and other small items. Lots of them. Just don’t know how many broken pots you can look at. There was a notable statue of a young man in very good condition. And a colossal statue from an ancient temple. And a very good scale reproduction of the temple. Other than that, I’m really not sure if it’s worth a visit unless you are really, really into ancient artifacts.
Peter G — Google review
The museum was nice to visit after visiting the ruins at the Valley of Temples nearby. Lots of archeological artifacts on display. They were all so interesting but we only had an hour to enjoy the museum because we were due elsewhere for dinner. The highlight for me was the big Telemon on display. We had gotten the combo ticket of €20 for the Valley of Temple and this museum. The price of the museum by itself is €9. There's a small gift shop at the entrance with a nice lady who also checked our tickets.
Sharon B — Google review
This archeological museum sits right in the midst of the valley of temples. It contains many of the treasures that were unearthed over the years at the Greek and Roman temples. I found the large stone giant and the model of the temples to be the most fascinating. Even with the giant which was the real size and the model showing how large the temple was, I find it hard to imagine the scale. There are hundreds if not thousands of smaller pieces, many fascinating pottery objects, figurines and coins too. You can buy a combo ticket for the museum and the temples, about 14 euro. When you arrive there is a narrow lane that leads to the parking lot. And you need to pay your ticket at the machine before leaving the lot. There is a cafe on site but was closed when I visited. There are toilets near the entrance but with limited facilities. Might need to bring your own soap.
James M — Google review
So many artifacts! Nice thing to do after the main attraction (Temples), I thought it's good value for the extra 3.50€. There was a giant group of teenagers with a guide who completely surrounded me and took a lot of space, which was awkward, and it was confusing how to get out of the museum (my advice: just go back to the entrance). What is completely strange to me is that there is no marked / direct path between the Valley of temples entrances / parking lots and the museum. The first path I tried back to the parking lot from the museum I got chased down by aggressive dogs, the second was a proper road but the gate was only open so visitors from tour buses can enter there (to my knowledge) => result: a guard stopped me thinking I tried to enter without paying. Getting TO the museum from the Temples I followed a marked path, and after 25 min walking in the heat with no shade arrived near the museum but all the gates were closed; a lady met me to ask what i was doing there; according to her i was trespassing 🤦‍♂️ but she let me out nicely and actually tried to help. You'd think if they sell a combined ticket it would be easy to access and find? No, no and no. But yeah once you find it there's a lot of things to see inside this museum. Probably they have millions of artifacts. I would suggest you only buy the combined ticket with the museum if you think that you and your party have the energy to walk 11 kilometers in total, because this is what it took me. And that's with my "illegal" shortcuts. It's an easy walk, but after 3 hours (time it took me with audio guide and taking some pictures) visiting the 12+ sites in the Valley of Temples, I've read reviews where people were too tired or couldn't find the museum. You'll see it on Google Maps but it is absolutely not signed anywhere until you're right in front of it. To be fair when I bought the combined ticket the staff did warn me it was a kilometer away (except you have to take a road around the park so it's more like 1.5 km but anyway...) If you're traveling on foot / by bus, the museum is actually the closest to the city.
Mathieu C — Google review
Dispute a nice display of ceramics, the experience is ruined by a huge group of young students yelling and running around with the teacher practically yelling her explanations. Apparently kids can rn and scream in the museum and it’s ok. No said anything.
J B — Google review
Amazing museum. Really a gem. Worth taking the extra time to spend here. Did not combine it with the valley but it took us a good three hours to study everything and see some things in detail. And to do a small stop i between. Highly recommended!

Catholic church
Sights & Landmarks
In the heart of Agrigento, Italy, lies the Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Greci, a Norman church with a rich history. Constructed on the grounds of an ancient Greek temple dating back to the 5th century BC, this site has witnessed various rulers and cultural influences over time. The church features well-preserved Norman wooden ceilings and Byzantine frescoes that offer a glimpse into its storied past.
Very interesting and beautiful place. You can see and get close to the typical three steps of the Greek temple upon which the church is erected. The curch itself is a welcome difference to the baroque churches of Sicily with a rather humble decor and also murals dating almost a thousand years old and the glass floor, allowing you to see the underground of the church. The courtyard in front of the church is also beautiful and gets visited by cats, which I love. Best thing was the ticket vendor though. As all the staff of the church sights in Agrigento he was very friendly and helpful. Also well versed in English and apparently all Roman languages. He took his time to answer all questions I had regarding the church and the town. Clearly a professional in thing regarding archeology and history. I asked him a out a full 20 minutes.
D. P — Google review
Chiesa di Santa Maria dei Greci was a simple yet memorable church. The fact that it was built over the foundation of an ancient Greek temple was particularly interesting. The preserved foundation was visible from above through a glass floor, and there have been ongoing restoration efforts. During one such restoration, a "putridarium" was uncovered. Per Wikipedia, a putridarium was a temporary burial place where bodies, commonly of monks or nuns, could be stored. This underground crypt in the Church of St. Mary of the Greeks was where members of the Brotherhood of Santa Maria dei Greci were allowed to dry, sitting on chairs made from living rock, to reach a proper stage of decomposition before the bones were collected for burial. We found it to be quite an intriguing approach to burial rites.

Charming old church. Full of character. So much history here. I wish I had more time for the visit. I paid €6 for an all-in-one ticket to visit Mudia, the Cathedral and the Church of Santa Maria deli Grechi (November 2022). (The staff informed us that the church will be closed for one month from 3 November 2022 for restoration/renovation works. Best to check website before visiting.)

Monastery
Sights & Landmarks
The Monache cistercensi di Santo Spirito, also known as the Abbey Church and Convent of the Holy Spirit, is a remarkable example of medieval art and Chiaramonte style in Sicily. It stands as one of the most captivating monuments in Agrigento's historical center. The monastery is home to cloistered nuns who continue to preserve ancient recipes from the convent's bakery, including almond macaroons, couscous, and other sweet treats.
I loved this place. Such a nice atmosphere in the church. Stunning statues inside and the nuns were so pleasant and kind , and their sweets!! I regret that we didn’t buy more as they were sooooo delicious! Especially the amaretti biscuits. Thank you!!
Manuela M — Google review
Crazy women at the monastery tried to force us to sell tickets. We did not want to go in after the rude and aggressive attitude of the two old women, who said that they had cut us a receipt after asking the price. When we told this to the women, she stated that we had to pay even if we did not enter because she had taken a receipt. Rude women persistently shouted at us in Italian and insulted us like idiots in English. Then, an Italian guide came to the monastery and solved the problem by apologizing to us. I recommend that you do not go to the monastery where these rude and aggressive women live.
Aljehin — Google review
We had a heck of a time reaching the entrance of this huge complex via GPS and maps - but it was totally worth it to see the remarkable Serpotta stucco sculpture in the church and eat the unusual monastery sweets offered by the sisters next door, which can be nicely packaged as gifts. Recommended, a highlight of fascinating Agrigento.

Old ruined monastery, poor collection in museum. For church you pay separate. Near main door there is door with sweat bakery - it's good.

Don't miss this place (I mean the church, I didn't visit the museum) with beautiful baroque plaster sculptures.

In downtown Agrigento, you'll find the Theatro Luigi Pirandello, a historic theater located at the entrance to the town hall. This architectural gem was built in 1870 and has been a prominent cultural venue in the city. It's not just a beautiful building; it also hosts theatrical events that visitors can enjoy. The theater is named after Luigi Pirandello, a renowned writer and Nobel laureate known for his novels and plays.

Hands down the best meal I had in Sicily. The food was exquisite, great selection of wines and excellent service. The fried ravioli with ricotta and pistachio is a dessert to die for

High-end restaurant with stunning food. The Parmigiana was a food highlight of our trip to Sicily.

This is an absolutely fantastic ristorante in Agrigento. We were a group of 4 for lunch and the ambience of the venue is very calming. Attentive service, very good (local) wine list, and the food - wow!!! Not just the quality of the ingredients (the Chef - Vincenzo Santalucia - makes his own olive oil and the special of the day was a pasta using fresh portabello mushrooms from Mt Etna), but the presentation is inventive and first class. Overall this was a fabulous experience and represents outstanding value for money.

Shared by our b&b host. Was one of the best experiences in Sicily. Reserved a table on balcony, very beautiful and typical Sicily decorations. Food is great quality, very fresh and clean seafood, service is great. Oysters and mussels are super clean and tasty, as well as red prawn. But I feel the starters of 22 euro set is quite a lot, suggest small main course or share with more people. Fall in love with the food!!!

When you visit Agrigento, this is a must for dinner! Ambiance and service were exceptional. The menu is varied with many local specialties. Don't miss the pasta with red prawns and traditional Sicilian pesto - delicious! Also, one of the best cannolo we ever had! Bravo!!

We stopped just for drinks, and were given a plate of yummy snacks with each round. Spinach and sausage rolls, plus the usual crisps. Wine was very nice. They go beyond what was expected.
Chris B — Google review
We went there for an evening drink and a snack. I have to say I will remember the atmosphere in this bar for long. Really tasty drinks and snacks, plus super friendly staff. They were nice and chatty, showed us local alcohol and everything was superb during whole evening. But the most amazing thing happened at the end of the night. They were already closing the bar, outside there was a rain that heavy like I’ve seen 3 times in my like tops, and because our B&B was far away they offered that they could drive us so we would be able to get home in this rain. There is not a lot of places that would do that. If I’m ever back to Agrigento, I’m definitely coming back there :)

The 4.6 rating of Kalos on Google helped us decide on it as our lunch restaurant. It was one of the better experiences we have had in Italy. The service was terrific with the waiter attending to our every needs with a panache that we weren't expecting. The food was well presented (above average) and all the dishes were tasty. After visiting a nearby Michelin guide-listed restaurant the next day, we wished we had gone back...way better. We even observed "chef" attending to customers at the tables.

The service and the atmosphere were very good. Our waiter made sure we had a very nice table by the window. There was also enough space between tables to be able to have a conversation without raising our voices. Unfortunately I have to give it one star because among our party of 4, 3 had stomach issues the very next morning. We tried various dishes, including a fish tartare.

This is world class dining and not too expensive, given the exceptional quality and variety. We recommend trying the 5 course tasting menu for the full experience (seafood or land). Excellent local wine list, of course. We're from London and this was up there with the best.

The food was outstanding and sublime. The service attentive in a beautiful restaurant. We had multiple courses- the pistachio and shrimp pasta was so delicious. Subsequently ate the same dish at another restaurant in town and there was no comparison. Don't miss going there.

Centrally located and nice decorated. Professional, friendly and competent staff. Food really delicious, fresh and locally sourced. Octopus was delicious as well as the prawns. A really good restaurant if you’re looking to try some very unique and interesting flavors as well as some of the most popular dishes from Arigento including the seafood cous cous and a variation of the fennel sardine pasta. Very tasty food, but even with a shared appetizer we left hungry. Portions could be a bit bigger. Other than that, we enjoyed our experience. Friendly, fast and efficient service. Available also in English in addition to Italian. Payments accepted with cash or card. Reservations can be made online or by telephone. Note some dishes such as the seafood cous cous are only available on specific days. Handicap friendly and wheelchair accessible. Parking can be tricky but not impossible. Menu is online only, scannable with a QR code at the table. Vegetarian options available. Baby chairs available for children.

The dinner here is an interesting Sicilian-African fusion and although I had no idea what to expect that to be like, it was really great! The vegetable couscous is really recommended but it is spicy so maybe have it only after sunset. The signature cocktail (pineapple and peach juice with ginger and vodka) was also really nice! It was strongest at the top and got sweeter near the end but it was refreshing.

We received a menu but had to wait for 30 minutes to order food while the personnel chatted gladly with another table. The food itself was good but the service was not good at all. Great food. Tried three different dishes and all of them was good. Especially the pizza. Hospitality was fantastic and the owner even came out and talked to us and ask if everything was alright. Nice atmosphere next to the church on the main street of Agrigento. Worth to pay a visit. =)

A nicely decorated restaurant in a lively part of town, but let down by slow service and average food. We were warmly greeted at the door and encouraged to take a seat inside but once we’d be shown a table, we didn’t have anyone come to take our order or check on us for about 15-20 minutes. Checking the menu was easy using an English menu and we ultimately ordered a spicy pizza & basil pesto pasta with drinks. Both dishes were underwhelming and lacked that delicious Italian flavour that you expect from great restaurant. Overall, not too bad, expensive for how it tasted & I wouldn’t go back.

This is a fantastic restaurant! The prices are great for the food you get. The quality of the food is outstanding. In my opinion, the best pizza I have ever had.
